Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
The invention provides an electronic watch having a circuit base plate covered by a cover integrally molded to the base plate by a transfer molding process. The cover provides a connector opening for connection to a liquid crystal display, as well as protection for an integrated circuit mounted on the base plate. At the same time, openings are left in the cover-ing through which solder connections to large electrical com-ponents such as quartz crystals and condensers may be made.
Excellent insulation, water-proofing and heat resistance are obtained.

Description
lOf~9~ 0 B~CKGROUND OF T~IE INVENTION
This invention relates to an electronic watch having a circuit base plate covered by a cover integrally molded by a transfer molding process to the base plate.
In the conventional type of electronic watch, the base plate is covered by a separate cover separately molded. Therefore, a process of making an electronic watch was complicated, by having to assemble the base plate, cover plate, display device, connector and large components.
The present invention aims to simplify this assembly and improve reliability. Accordingly the present invention provides an electronic watch having a circuit base plate covered by a cover plate integrally molded by a transfer molding process to the base plate.
The present invention provides an electronic watch having parts easily mounted to the circuit base plate with the number of parts reduced.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the present invention, there is provided an electronic watch having a circuit base plate and a cover plate inte-grally molded to the base plate by a transfer molding process.
More particularly, the electronic watch comprises, in com-bination, a circuit base plate having circuit parts mounted thereon, an integrated circuit portion formed in the circuit base plate, a covering formed by a transfer molding in order to cover the circuit base plate, and a display device, wherein the covering is constructed so as to have shape and structure suitable for the mounting of cir-,~

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The accompanying drawings show one preferred embodiment of the present invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a particular portion of an electronic watch of the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of another form of circuit base plate and cover; and Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a connector.
A circuit base plate 1 has a recess la in which IC (inte-grated circuit) 2 is mounted, holes lb, and lc for fitting a crystal oscillator 3 therein, an electrode pattern ld for connecting to elec-tric elements, and an electrode pattern le for connecting the output of the IC 2 to a liquid crystal panel 4. The liquid crystal panel 4 is fixed to the circuit base plate 1 so as to connect with it. A
cover 5 made of synthetic resin molded by a transfer molding process, covers the circuit base plate 1. On the cover 5, a through-hole 5c for positioning a connector 6 is formed 50 as to connect the elec-trode pattern le to the electrode pattern 4e of the display 4. Arecess 5b is provided to receive the liquid crystal panel 4. The connector 6 of silicone rubber, has alternate conductive layers 6a and insulating layers 6b. The spacing of conductive layers 6a is arranged to be shorter than the spacing of the electrode pattern le of the circuit base plate 1 (see Figures 2 and 3). T~us, if the ': :

3'~:0 connector 6 shifts in relation to the electrode pattern le the elec-trical connection between the patterns le and 4a is not affected.
4a is a transparent electrode formed on the liquid crystal panel 4 and 9 is a panel presser.
The inner face of the integrated circuit IC 2 is secured to a recess of the circuit base plate 1 by bond paste and the like.
Output of the IC 2 is connected to an electrode pattern of the base plate 1 through a wire bonding process which is embedded in the cover 5 by synthetic resin sealed by a transfer molding process. A lead terminal 3a of the crystal oscillator 3 and a ground 3b are inserted into holes lb and lc of the base plate 1 and secured by soldering.
A condenser 8 for stabilizing oscillation and a trimmer condenser are fixed to an electrode pattern ld of the circuit base plate 1 by sold-ering. The liquid crystal panel 4 is kept in place on a side of the recessed portion b of the covering 5 by means of a panel presser 9.
A connector 6 is inserted through a through-hole 5c of the covering 5 and fixed in place between the electrode pattern le of the circuit base plate 1 and a transparent electrode 4a of the liquid crystal in order to electrically connect the electrode pattern le and the trans-parent electrode 4a. The connector 6, is guided into the through-hole 5c and easily secured at its predetermined position. In this manner, the through-hole 5c functions to firmly position the connec-tor 6. Since the through-hole 5c is formed in the cover 5 made of synthetic resin, the covering itself attains its useful function as a kind of connector frame and so that the connector, when fitted, is sufficiently protected. In order to form the cover 5 by transfer molding, upper and lower faces of the circuit base plate 1 are held ' ' ' , ,: , , ':

in a mold and form a pattern for soldering of circuit elements with-out obstruction due to burring of the synthetic resin material.
Epoxy synthetic resin having few impurities, good water-proofing and excellent heat-resistance is suitable for molding the cover 5. Pre-ferably, a suitable material is that sold under the Trade Mark as Polyset 410 having a coefficient of linear expansion value which is almost the same as that of the circuit base plate 1.
As explained above, according to the present invention, the covering portion made by means of transfer process has a through-hole for installing the connector therein, so that the correct position of the connector is firmly determined by using the connector and the installing of the connector can be carried out easily and firmly.
Because the through-hole is formed in the covering made of synthetic resin, the covering itself has a function of a kind of connector frame and the connector installed is completely protected from da-mage. Therefore, according to the present invention, there is no need to form another connector frame, resulting in reduction of parts number, simplification of the construction of the electronic watch, 19 and decreasing of the manufacturing cost.
