Abstract

TOLERâNCIA DE MICOTOXINAS DE TRICOTECENO EM PLANTAS E ANIMAIS ATRAVéS DA MODIFICAçãO DO GENE DE PROTEìNA RIBOSSÈMICA L3 Fusarium graminearum é um patógeno de planta, que ataca uma faixa ampla de espécies de planta incluindo milho (podridão talo e espiga), cevada e trigo (praga da cabeça, como ferrugem). As pragas de Fusarium resultam em perdas de milhões de dólares nas receitas de colheitas. A infecção por Fusarium graminearum nos cereais reduz tanto o rendimento quanto a qualidade do grão. As micotoxinas são produzidas por muitas espécies fúngicas de Fusarium e assim o grão torna-se contaminado com estas micotoxinas, tais como os tricotecenos. O principal tricoteceno produzido por F. graminearum bem como por F. culmorum é desoxinivalenol (abreviado como DON, também conhecido como vomitoxina). Os tricotecenos são inibidores da síntese protéica potentes e são bastante tóxicos para seres humanos e gado. Um gene de levedura foi identificado o qual é resistente ao tricoteceno, tricodermina. Um gene de planta correspondente foi preparado, o qual tem sido utilizado para transformar plantas e seria adequado para transformar animais. Estas plantas transformadas têm uma tolerância aumentada aos tricotecenos e poderiam ser mais resistentes à infestação por Fusarium. Potencialmente, os animais transformados poderiam ter uma tolerância aumentada às micotoxinas de tricoteceno. O gene modificado também poderia ser utilizado como um marcador selecionável em experiências de transformação.
