Abstract

El Fusarium graminearum es un fitopatogeno que ataca a una gran variedad de especies vegetales, incluyendo al maíz (putrefaccion de la mazorca y deltallo), la cebada y el trigo (anublo de las espigas). Las epidemias de Fusarium provocan millones ded olares en pérdidas en las cosechas de los cultivos. Lainfeccion por Fusarium graminearum en cereales reduce tanto el rendimiento en granos como su calidad. Las micotoxinas son producidas por muchas especies dehongos Fusarium y, por ende, losgranos s e contaminan con estas micotoxinas, tales como los tricotecenos. El principal tricoteceno producido por el F.gramineum, así como por el F. culmorum, es el deoxinivalenol (que se abrevia como DON y es también conocido como vomitoxina). Lostricoteceno s son potentesinhibidores de la síntesis proteica y son bastantes toxicos para los seres humanos y para el ganado. Se ha identificado un gen de levadura que es resistente altricoteceno, la tricodermina. Se ha preparado un gen vegetalcorrespondiente, el que se ha utilizado para transformar plantas y sería apropiado paratransformar animales. Estas plantas transformadas tienen una mayor tolerancia a los tricotecenos y podrían ser más resistentes a la infeccion porFusarium.Potencialmente, los anim ales transformados podrían tener mayor tolerancia a las micotoxinas tricotecénicas. Este gen modificado podría también utilizarse comomarcador selectivo en experimentos de transformacion.
