Abstract

"PROCESSAMENTO ELETROQUìMICO DE MATERIAIS SóLIDOS EM SAL FUNDIDO". Um material sólido (M¬ 1¬X) (6), compreendendo uma solução sólida de uma espécie de não metal (X) em um metal ou semi-metal (M¬ 1¬) ou um composto entre a espécie de não metal e o metal ou semi-metal é imerso em um sal fundido (M¬ 2¬Y) (4). Um potencial catódico é aplicado ao material para remover uma parte da espécie de não metal por eletro-desoxidação. A medida em que tal reação prossegue, ela se torna menos eficiente e, portanto, para remover a espécie de não metal em concentrações mais baixas, uma fonte de um metal reativo (M¬ 3¬) (8) é imersa no sal fundido e é eletronicamente conectada ao material, seja por condução eletrónica através do sal, seja através de um circuito externo. As reações ocorrem no material, onde a espécie de não metal se dissolve no sal e no metal reativo, o qual reage com a espécie de não metal dissolvida no sal, para formar um produto de reação mais estável do que um composto entre a espécie de não metal e o metal ou semi-metal (M¬ 1¬) . A espécie de não metal é, dessa forma, removida do material sólido.
