Abstract

IN FLOATING / FRACTIONATION SYSTEMS TO TREAT LIQUIDS, SEPARATE LIQUIDS TO BE TREATED BY THEM". Improvement in a fractionation / flotation system to remove waste such as biosolids, nitrates or nitrites from a liquid containing them in an apparatus to separate a liquid containing particles of varying mass or specific gravity. A reactor vessel 153 comprises a fractionation column 153a and a foam aggregation chamber 153b superimposed on the column. The liquid containing the waste is pumped into the fractionation column 153a via a pump 105 and an outlet 159 that branches into a first inlet 163 and a second inlet 165. These inlets inject the liquid into the fractionation chamber 153a at intermediate locations which are axially spaced, where the first entry 163a is higher than the second entry 165a. A waste reduction gas such as air, oxygen or ozone is injected at the second inlet just before introducing the liquid into the fractionation column 153a. The foam generated from the introduced liquid has biosolids adsorbed to it and is collected inside the aggregation chamber 153b for extraction. An outlet 173 for the treated liquid is provided at the base of the fractionation column 153a. The separation apparatus 127 comprises an elongated passage 133 which has a primary lip 129a for the liquid containing particles to flow over into the passage. A secondary lip 129b is disposed lower than the primary lip 129a for liquid to flow over and out of passage 133 after being deflected. The flow is diverted into the passage 133 by a circular suction tube 141 into both a wound recirculation portion 145 and a discharge portion 147. The liquid within the recirculation portion 145 contains particles of relatively specific mass or gravity lower as it is extracted from the passage via holes 143 and pump 105 providing suction to it. This liquid is injected into the protein skimmer 125 which comprises the flotation / fractionation system. liquid within discharge portion 147 contains particles of higher mass or specific gravity which flows out of passage 133 and over secondary lip 129b to a biofilter 131.
