<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
chimique.

Improvements to refining processes and devices
of cast iron.
The present invention relates to improvements
to methods and devices for refining pig iron in a converter with blowing of industrially pure oxygen on
the surface of the cast-iron bath, by means of a lance introduced from above into the converter.
It is well known that the mixing during refining between metal and slag is an important factor from the point of view of
the speed of the physicochemical reactions, their degree of completion (exhaustion of the capacity of the slag in dephosphorate ion and desulphurization), the homogeneity of composition of the metal, etc. It can in particular happen that,
in some cases, the stirring obtained at the end of refining by means of the refining agent and its gaseous reaction products is considered to be insufficient to perfect the refining under the desired conditions.
In other oxygen refining processes such as those with
<EMI ID = 1.1>
by means of nozzles located at the bottom of the converter, the stirring of the metal bath is more energetic and one obtains
<EMI ID = 2.1>
after additional mixing using a neutral gas such as nitrogen or argon. There is indeed a drop in
<EMI ID = 3.1>
equilibrium value with the carbon of the bath, which results from the fact that when the neutral gas passes through the bath, the partial pressure of the CO becomes almost zero and consequently,
<EMI ID = 4.1>
well known tage to require fewer deoxidizing alloys and to ensure a lesser amount of inclusions present in the final steel.
The object of the present invention is to improve the refining process with the blowing of industrially pure oxygen by
the top by making it benefit from the advantages mentioned above, by complementary blowing of an appropriate gas.
The process which is the subject of the present invention is essentially characterized in that the refining is carried out by keeping the converter in a substantially vertical position and by blowing oxygen on the metal bath by means of the central lance and when the amount of oxygen needed for refining
has been injected, in that the converter is tilted in a substantially horizontal position and in that one blows
in the metal bath, a fluid composed in whole or in part of a neutral gas through the wall located at the moment below said bath, until 'the dephosphorous power has been exhausted and / or slag desulfurizer.
According to a modality of the invention, the neutral gas is nitrogen.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the fluid is made up, in addition to neutral gas, of an oxidizing gas; this oxidizing gas can obviously be air or industrially pure oxygen.
The present invention also relates to a device
<EMI ID = 5.1>
The converter..object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that it comprises injection means located in its side wall, at the level but opposite the taphole.
According to the invention, the injection means located in the side wall of the converter are nozzles.
According to a variant of the invention, the injection means located in the side wall of the converter are porous bricks.
Figures 1 and 2 attached are given by way of non-limiting example, to clearly understand the improvements that are the subject of the present invention.
According to Figure 1, the converter 1 is shown in a vertical position and contains a cast iron bath 2 intended
maturing. In addition to the oxygen blowing lance 3 and the tap hole 4, this converter is equipped with nozzles 5 located in its side wall, at the level but opposite to the tap hole 4.
In the vertical position, the side nozzles 5 are therefore located above the iron bath 2. The refining is carried out by blowing the necessary quantity of oxygen by means of the lance 3; while the side nozzles 5 do not work.
When this quantity of oxygen has been injected, the converter 1 is tilted to a horizontal position (figure 3) and neutral gas (argon for example) is blown by means of the side nozzles 5 which in this position are located below the metal bath , to ensure a good mixing of the bath until
until the final composition has been obtained.
With such a method, the porous nozzles or bricks only remain in contact with the metal bath for a few minutes before being placed in the bag, which is very
<EMI ID = 6.1>
chemical.
A significant advantage of these improvements lies in the possibility of using such stirring to complete the decarburization of the metal, especially in the case of the production of very low carbon steel.
