Process for upgrading metallurgical slag.
The present invention relates to a process for upgrading metallurgical slag, and in particular
basic slag from the production of steel.
The metallurgical slag produced by the refining of a non-phosphorous iron, according to the process in which industrially pure oxygen is blown into the converter, currently find only limited outlets.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
culture, where because of its high content of CaO this slag is used in small quantities to amend the soil, i.e. the introduction into the charge of the blast furnaces, as a flux and carrier of iron, but in limited quantity, because of the presence of troublesome impurities (phosphorus, alkalis) contained in these slags. These slags are also used for road construction but difficulties arise when the lime content of this slag is too high.
(swelling). The large surplus of unused slag is generally put in the slag heap, a solution which presents, among other things,
<EMI ID = 2.1>
since the material is considered unrecoverable.
The subject of the present invention is a process for treating these basic slags, in particular those originating from the oxygen refining of hematite melts, which makes it possible to recover most of them, if not almost all of them.
During his work, the applicant made the surprising observation that the mixture of basic slag in the liquid state with fly ash, for example from thermal power plants, could lead to obtaining products capable of setting. hydraulic, provided that this mixture has been subjected to rapid cooling.
Based on this unexpected finding, the process which is the subject of the present invention is essentially characterized in that fly ash is added to the basic slag in the liquid state and in that the mixture thus obtained is subjected to a rapid cooling operation, preferably with granulation.
According to the invention, the addition of the fly ash to the basic slag in the liquid state is advantageously carried out using a fluid containing in suspension the said fly ash.
v-
Also according to the invention, the fly ash added to the slag / basic is preferably accompanied by a reducing material sufficiently energetic to reduce, in the metallic state, the major part of the oxides of iron and manganese contained in said slag. basic.
In this way, the initial slag is transformed, on the one hand, into an iron-based metal product, which can be used in a converter, for example to complete the charge, and on the other hand, into a hydraulic binder which benefits important and well-known outlets (granulated blast furnace slag, Portland-type cement).
If the reduction operation is carried out by means of a reducing fluid, preferably a gaseous fluid, the fluid in question is introduced into the sco bath.

coaxial, the central tube being supplied with oxidizing fluid, preferably oxygen, and the space between the central tube and the outer tube being supplied with reducing fluid in proportions such that the resulting fluid is clearly reducing. This nozzle is advantageously provided with a device known per se, intended to ensure the efficient mixing of the two fluids. Under such conditions, the fly ash can be introduced into the basic slag bath through one of the two passages, central or peripheral, of the nozzle or by means of an additional injection tube supplied with neutral or reducing fluid. .
