<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>

"Process for enriching ferro-alloys with non-ferrous elements such as
<EMI ID = 1.1>
The present invention relates to a process for enriching ferroalloys in non-ferrous elements, such as nickel and / or cobalt, to the detriment of the iron contained in the material used by the process of the invention.
This process is particularly effective for obtaining ferro-alloys enriched in nickel or cobalt, which benefit from a very low final sulfur content.
There have long been processes for the enrichment of ferroalloys. Among these, one knows in particular that, in which one proceeds by addition of lime and by blowing air through the bottom of a Thomas type converter. By way of example, according to this process, the increase in a ferroalloy of an initial nickel / cobalt content of
21 - 24% up to values of 24 - 27% in a converter takes about an hour for a final quantity of 10 tons, which has the disadvantage of being very long. Another drawback consists in the fact that the quantity of air to be used must be very large.
In another process, this Ni / Co enrichment is for example, and in particular, obtained by blowing industrially pure oxygen in a converter from above in the presence of lime. Starting with a ferronickel containing, for example, 15% nickel, 0, 015% carbon and 0, 25% sulfur, thanks to this process, on the one hand, a iron alloy with 28% nickel / cobalt and 0 is obtained. , 01% carbon, and on the other hand a slag holding
<EMI ID = 2.1>
While such a top blowing process generally gives good results, although the final content of residual impurities is still to be considered as relatively high, it can however be criticized for certain drawbacks.
In the first place, the blowing of oxygen from the top of the converter does not ensure a very important mixing of the bath, especially in the absence of carbon as is generally the case in ferroalloys; this insufficient mixing leads to a fairly significant lengthening of the duration of the operation (duration which can be up to two hours in
a converter of 10 to 15 tons of capacity) and does not create the optimal conditions for the chemical reactions to take place at best within
of the metal bath. Second, the necessarily limited percentage of lime in the slag cannot ensure very extensive dephosphorization of the bath. Finally, in the third place, the introduction of desulfurizing agents into the bath from above, by means of lances, hardly leads to a very thorough nor very uniform desulfurization of the bath.
To remove some of the iron and impurities contained in
the starting product, the use of oxygen present vis-à-vis the blowing
In the air there are certain advantages which practice does not succeed in fully exploiting, in particular because of the insufficient stirring mentioned above in the case of blowing from the top. Moreover, the blowing of pure oxygen from the bottom of a vessel for metallurgical treatment is not conceivable in the conventional Thomas type process, because of the significant wear of the refractories by the pure oxygen.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation
of ferro-alloys with a high content of non-ferrous metals, by blowing pure oxygen into a metallurgical vessel, making it possible to overcome the various drawbacks mentioned above, in addition to obtaining a particularly low and homogeneous sulfur content .
The method forming the subject of the present invention, carried out
in a metallurgical vessel, is essentially characterized in that,
by means of at least one nozzle with two coaxial ducts, opening into
the metallurgical vessel under the surface of the metal bath, we blow
in the bath, through the central duct of the nozzle, an oxidizing gas consisting
in whole or in major part by industrially pure oxygen, and, by the space between the central tube and the peripheral tube of this
nozzle, a so-called protective fluid, and in that, preferably during the final phase of said process, a desulfurizing agent in suspension in a neutral gas is also injected into the bath, under its surface. It goes without saying that, if the injection of desulfurizing agents is carried out via the central ducts of the nozzles, the injection of fluid is maintained via the corresponding peripheral ducts.
According to the invention, it is advantageous to use, at least during part of the oxidizing gas blowing operation, a gas mixture
one component of which is a gas, such as argon, which is non-oxidizing. This improves
stirring the bath.
According to the invention, the nozzle with coaxial ducts can be arranged either in the bottom or in the lower part of the wall of the metallurgical vessel. The so-called protective fluid is, within the meaning of the invention, a fluid which, on contact with the bath, gives rise to an endothermic reaction, for example by decomposing, which protects the refractory against the action of pure oxygen; this protective fluid can be liquid (for example butane or liquefied propane, or fuel) or else gaseous (for example
natural gas); it does not depart from the invention to use a fluid which is not a hydrocarbon, for example water vapor, provided that it gives rise to the endothermic effect necessary to ensure the protection of the refractory of. container the oxygen insufflation site in the bath.
<EMI ID = 3.1>
magnesium, or any other desulfurizer known per se.
To ensure satisfactory protection of the refractory, it is necessary that the introduction of the protective fluid be practiced throughout the duration of the oxygen insufflation. However, it does not depart from the scope of the invention to ensure the introduction of said protective fluid, where appropriate, both through the two ducts of the double nozzle, outside the periods of blowing pure oxygen. , for example for reasons of stirring the bath. Also according to one embodiment of the invention, oxygen and the protective fluid are blown into the bath through part of the nozzles, while a non-oxidizing mixing fluid (possibly holding desulphurizing agents in suspension) is introduced via other nozzles
which are not necessarily with two coaxial conduits, or through porous bricks.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the ferroalloy manufacturing process is carried out in several phases.
In a first phase, during which takes place the blowing of the gas containing mostly pure oxygen and the introduction of the protective fluid through double nozzles located under the surface of the bath, we <EMI ID = 4.1>
the blowing of oxygen and protective fluid is resumed in the presence of a desulphurizing agent also blown under the upper level of the bath; to achieve this second phase, it is advantageously possible to add
<EMI ID = 5.1>
gravel for example).
The product obtained by the process of the invention, produced by
one or two phases, consists of a ferro-alloy which is particularly rich in non-ferrous metal and poor in sulfur; the two-phase process also makes it possible to produce a slag, the subsequent treatment of which allows
easy recovery of iron. According to an interesting operating method, at least part of the slag obtained at the end of the operation is retained in the container to be used for the treatment of the next casting.
According to a variant of the process of the invention, carried out in two phases, in a first sequence of this first phase, during which a ferrous slag is produced, the oxygen is blown through the submerged nozzles, as described above; a second sequence of this first phase is carried out with the container in an inclined position so as to allow the evacuation of the ferrous slag formed, by blowing oxidizing gas on or through the slag, the converter preferably remaining inclined throughout the duration of this sequence.
Then, during the second phase, during which additions are made, for example cooling and slagging, the insufflation of oxygen and the supply of desulfurizing agents is continued until the content is obtained.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
This variant is advantageously implemented by making use of a converter of which at least one of the nozzles is arranged such that in an inclined position, this nozzle is located outside the metal bath.
and that the jet of fluid leaving this nozzle exerts a thrust on the slag in the direction of its discharge from the container.
According to another interesting variant of the process of the invention, the operation of oxidizing the iron in the feed is carried out at the same time as the slag already formed is removed; the process thus becomes continuous, with new slag being formed as the slag is discharged.
<EMI ID = 7.1>
maintained in a position suitable for said discharge and the cooling (for example scraps or iron ore) and slag additions are carried out by direct introduction of these materials into the converter, and preferably in the immediate vicinity of the point of impact of the oxygen jet
or under the slag layer, while the introduction of the desulfurizing agents continues by means of at least one nozzle, the outlet of which remains
below the level of the metal, even in the tilted position of the container. This variant makes it possible to significantly reduce the duration of the method of the invention, as well as the number of manipulations of the container.
