<EMI ID=1.1>
virtuellement quantitatif.

<EMI ID=5.1>
On poursuit l'agitation pendant 1 heure.
98%.

"Method for the synthesis of codeinone from thebaine"
The present invention relates to a method of pre-

virtually quantitative.
The conversion of theban to codeinone can be accomplished by a number of different methods.
<EMI ID = 2.1> on the other hand, carried out the hydrolysis of theban in an aqueous acidic medium, obtaining codeinone and methanol, but with very low yields.
The conversion of thebaine to codeinone via
14-bromo-codeinone and neopinone have also been proposed by Conroy and Krausz, but the number of phases involved and the yield of each phase make this method of very little practical interest.
This transformation has been carried out with some success by several authors, such as Gavard and others, and has been the subject of various patents.
The yields obtained were between 50 and 75%.
The present invention relates to a method of transferring

inert, in particular alkyl ethers having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups under anhydrous conditions, in the presence of a catalyst, preferably iodine, followed by hydrolysis of the halogen compounds thus formed in an aqueous alkaline medium at operating temperatures below
<EMI ID = 4.1>
hydrobromic or hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid being very particularly preferred.
Yields greater than 95% are obtained by the process according to the present invention.
The following non-limiting example illustrates a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Example
In a 3 liter flask, equipped with a stirrer, a thermometer and a gas outlet tube containing calcium chloride, this flask containing a solution of 150 g of anhydrous hydrobromic acid dissolved in 550 ml of n-dibutyl ether and being cooled externally to -15 [deg.] C, a solution of 2 g of iodine dissolved in 100 ml of anhydrous methylene chloride is added, and the temperature is reduced to -20 [deg. .]VS.
When this temperature has been reached, is added rapidly, with vigorous stirring, to the previous solution, a solution of 100 g of thebaine (purity of 92.5%) dissolved in 1000 ml of anhydrous methylene chloride previously cooled to -15. [deg.] C.
As a result of this addition, the temperature rises
<EMI ID = 5.1>
external cooling and this temperature is maintained for 7 minutes.
At the end of this period, the contents of the flask are poured with vigorous stirring into a 5 liter flask containing a suspension of 180 g of sodium bicarbonate in
1000 g of water and 450 g of ice.
Stirring is continued for 1 hour. The product of the hydrolysis reaction separates into two layers. The aqueous layer is adjusted to pH 8 with dilute sodium hydroxide and it is extracted three times, each time with 200 ml of methylene chloride. The combined extracts are added to the organic layer, and the organic mixture is washed with water and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate.
Methylene chloride is separated from the resulting solution under vacuum until the volume is reduced to 1/100 of the original volume.
The codeinone which precipitates during the concentration of the organic solution and which shows a pale pink color is then filtered and washed with diethyl ether.
96 g of codeinone with a melting point of
165-167 [deg.] C and a purity of 90.36%. The yield is
98%.
