the goethite crystals are obtained with a very
great importance.
However, these known processes have various drawbacks: the oxidation by aeration or oxygenation carried out in these known processes is always long and
is of the order of several tens of hours, the "acid" or "basic" processes are difficult to conceive continuously, the oxidation in an acid medium requires an excess of iron which
should be considered as lost, while the oxidation in

are therefore expensive bases. In addition, if for some reason it is appropriate to consider the incorporation of heteroelements, such as cobalt, manganese, zinc, nickel and copper in the crystals of magnetic iron oxide, it is It has been found that this incorporation is difficult to control. No doubt because of the slowness of the reaction for the formation of goethite; there seems to be a risk of segregation formation.
The present invention essentially aims
<EMI ID = 12.1>
above by proposing a new process which, moreover, should be considered as economically very profitable thanks to

chosen from the group comprising carbonate, bicarbonate or alkali metal hydroxide, in particular sodium or potassium, and this at a temperature below 85 [deg.] C.
Advantageously, the reaction is carried out
above at a temperature of 60 to 80 [deg.] C.
The invention also relates to iron oxide
(III) magnetic y obtained by reduction and reoxidation of the goethite produced according to the above process.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description given below, by way of nonlimiting example, of some particular embodiments of the invention.
The process according to the invention is based on the direct precipitation of aFeOOH by addition to a solution of se

carbonate, bicarbonate or hydroxide of an alkali metal, in particular of sodium and potassium.
The! precipitation by hypochlorite-carbonate mixture
starting from ferrous sulphate is already described in the literature
<EMI ID = 15.1>
p. 287-288. This literature is therefore very old and is in fact limited to observing the formation of a hydrate Fe203.H20
without specifying the crystallographic form. It was however

The precipitation and oxidation reaction
i according to the above equations must, if we want to ob-
hold well-formed crystals, be done with supersaturation
as low as possible.
In this connection, according to the invention, the reagents are mixed very rapidly and preferably dilute solutions are used. Thus, it was found that the precipitates which are formed when stirring is carried out using a stirrer

In this regard it should be noted that the incorporation of the aforementioned heteroelement can take place at any time during precipitation: in other words, it is conceivable to obtain goethi- your "pure heart" and "externally doped".
It is also important to note that, according to the invention, it is possible to carry out the precipitation on a suspension of goethite already formed, originating from a previous precipitation. In such a case, the procedure is as follows: after having carried out a first precipitation, washing several times
goethite by simple decantation, a ferrous sulfate solution is added to the washed goethite slurry and the precipitation is repeated. The crystals thus formed are significantly larger and better formed than the crystals of a single precipitation, indicating that the suspended goethite crystals act as showers of crystallization.

The process according to the invention has the advantage over known processes that it requires a short reaction time to obtain a valid product. This makes it possible to envisage carrying out the process in a continuous manner with the possibility of recycling seeds. It is possible to incorporate a

It should also be noted that in order to avoid local supersaturations, the etching solution defined above is advantageously extended above the surface of the solution of the ferrous salt in the form of fine droplets, for example by spraying.
