Abstract

A thin (10-100 mu m) sprayed- primer film basically comprising rust-resistant metal and other powders spec. Al, metal-oxides, graphite, and/or pigments, in a suitable suspension protects low-alloy or C-steel plate or parts, pending subsequent welding; this is effected directly on the primer, and is followed by direct application of the definitive protective or decorative paint system. For example, application of the primer on a sand-blasted plate gave a film contg. 93% of metallic Zn on which, after drying for a week at ambient temp. without intermediate treatment, manual, semi-automatic, and automatic welding was successfully carried out. The temporary protection is particularly valuable for ship-plate possibly subject to aggressive marine atmos. while awaiting welding.
