Abstract

Corrosion-protection of large metal storage tanks installed below ground level is effected by supporting the metal shell on the concrete static lining of the pit by means of insulating saddles and filling the space between the lining and the shell with oxidised bitumen injected hot, thus providing passive protection, and by making the shell cathodic with respect to the surrounding soil to give active cathodic protection so as to avoid ion migration and the resultant chemical and electrochemical corrosion.
