Abstract

1494072 Protecting metal piles E J W HENRY 2 Dec 1974 [3 Sept 1973] 10422/73 Heading C7E [Also in Division El ] A method of protecting in situ a metal pile partially immersed in water from corrosion comprises placing a jacket around the pile and injecting polyurethane foam into the intervening space which sets to form a protective coating. The jacket can be formed from black pigmented polypropylene. Sheets are wrapped around the pile on spacers and are welded to form the jacket. Foam is subsequently injected through the ends of the jacket or through holes in the jacket. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a structure having a pile 9 subjected to a high water level HWL and low water level LWL is protected in situ. A former 12 is erected around the upper part of the pile. Jacket portions 16 are built up on the former and slide down the pile until a complete jacket is built. The top portion is then sealed, and air pumped into expel water in the jacket. The air can be heated. Foam is subsequently injected to form the coating.
