Abstract

Smelt refining in a converter in which the bottom and/or the lower part of the wall under the level of the metallic bath is provided with a nozzle with two coaxial tubes, is effected in two stages by (a) refining while blowing technically pure O2 or O2-enriched air into the smelt by the central tube of the nozzle and blowing a liq or gaseous hydrocarbon into the smelt by the peripheral tube, and (b) refining by an O2 steam method for a duration of ca/min. Produces steel with a very low C content. Very little attack on the refractory lining of the convertor occurs.
