Abstract

The glass objects are made from sodium aluminosilicate glass, K+ being then substituted for Na+ in the surface in two steps : (I) at 30 degrees - 100 degrees C below the glass transformation temp., for 15 min. to 3 hrs.; and (2) at more than 100 degrees C below the transformation temp. for 2-6 hrs. The glass comprises by wt. 5-20% Na2O, 5-20% Al2O3 and/or ZrO2, the residue being SiO2 and other glass formers and modifiers. Compared with known processes, the treatment times are reduced and the strength is increased.
