Abstract

Non-aderent carbon beads with a nominal diameter of 0.5-12.7 mm. and a roundness of 0.5-1.0 are prepd. by (a) introducing a mineral acid sludge contg. >=5wt.% hydrocarbons into a mixing zone, (product from the reaction of a mineral acid with an aromatic or unsatd. hydrocarbon), (b) mixing with a finely-divided carbonaceous material essentially free of moisture selected from petroleum coke, acid coke, wood charcoal, bitlumen oil, lignite, carbon black and carbonised vegetable materials having particles of 0.35 mm., at a ratio of acid sludge to carbonaceous materail of 1:5 to 5:1, and (c) converting the mixture to beads by kneading at 0-150 degrees C.
