Abstract

Packaging boxes made of moulded panels (of expanded polystyrene) having chamfered ends and 'vee' channels at intervals across the panels to allow the panels to be folded into a box shape, where the hinge lines are reinforced by an integral tape of flexible material, esp. polypropylene. Pref. the tape is perforated or features protrusions to improve its anchorage in the matrix panels. Esp. useful for making fruit boxes which can be folded flat for storage or return for re-use. Construction may include base panels interlocked onto rails mounted on the side walls and may incorporate partition grids. The reinforcing tapes shown have a pair of 'vee' ribs which help to align the tape in the mould with the panel hinge axes.

 EMI2.1

   Selon l'invention, on prévoit encore que le ruban comporte des disconti- nuités de surface permettant l'ancrage de la matière plastique sur les arti- culations lors du moulage, ces discontinuités pouvant être constituées par des perforations ou par des bossages.   ane   forme d'exécution de l'invention est représentée à titre d'exemple au dessin annexé dans lequel : - la figure 1 est une vue en perspective d'une caisse d'emballage réali- sée conformément à la présente invention et représentée en position d'utilisa- tion; - la figure 2 est une vue en perspective de la même caisse en position repliée ; - la figure 3 est une vue en perspective de la casse montrant la fixa- tion du fond; - la figure 4 est une vue en perspective d'une caisse sans fond comportant un cloisonnement intérieur;

The present invention relates to a box of m; âll3be 'a t'jie c03.o'tamt side panels and optionally a bottom and a cover, and intended for example for fruit packaging or for external or internal protection. re of other packaging, such as a cardboard case.

Known boxes of this type have the drawback of having a large bulk even when they are not in use, for example during their transport from the manufacturer to the user, which increases the shipping costs. Furthermore, the storage of a large number of boxes also presents difficulties, owing to the fact that it requires a very large space and that the stacking of the boxes is difficult, the latter having a tendency to fit into each other. other.

In addition, when these boxes are made of molded material, their manufacture is expensive, owing to the large volume that the molds used must have.

The object of the present invention is to remedy all these drawbacks and, to do this, it relates to a packing box of the type mentioned above, characterized in that at least one of said panels is connected to each of the two adjacent panels by a hinge.

It will be appreciated that, thanks to this arrangement, when the body is not in use, the panels can be folded against each other by pivoting them around the joints, which makes it possible to completely flatten the body, the bottom and the cover. having possibly been removed beforehand. Thus, shipping and storage of crates can be made considerably easier, as many crates can be stacked flat with minimum space.

In a preferred embodiment, the joints connecting the same panel to the two adjacent panels are arranged one along the junction line, fictitious or real, of the external surfaces and the other along the junction line of the internal surfaces of the two panels \ - which they connect respectively.

In this way, the three panels thus connected can easily be folded down substantially in the same plane. Indeed :, the two panels connected by the articulation arranged along the junction line of their internal surfaces

to bring the adjacent panels substantially at a right angle, this position then being held rigidly by means of the fixing of the bottom or of the fitting into the body of an interior partition.

According to the invention, provision is also made for the panels to be made of flexible plastic material and for the articulations connecting two adjacent panels to be formed by at least one portion of strip of flexible material.

This arrangement makes it possible to considerably simplify the manufacture of the body. The tape can in fact be placed beforehand in the mold at the locations of the junctions between the panels, then the plastic material can be injected into the mold, so that it coats the various joints.

   According to the invention, provision is also made for the tape to include surface discontinuities allowing the anchoring of the plastic material to the joints during molding, these discontinuities possibly being formed by perforations or by bosses. An embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which: - Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packing box produced in accordance with the present invention and shown in position of use; - Figure 2 is a perspective view of the same body in the folded position; FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the case showing the fixing of the bottom; - Figure 4 is a perspective view of a bottomless box comprising an interior partition;

We see that thus is easy o: çß the angle formed by the panels 1a and 1b and to close that formed by the panels 1b and 1c.

The joints 5 and 6 being made in the same way as the joints 4-and 3, respectively, it is conceivable that it is very easy, for example by pressing on the corners corresponding to the joints 3 and 6, to completely flatten the crate and bring the panels 1a, 1b and, respectively 1c, 1d into alignment and apply the first of these pairs of panels against the second. This gives the position shown in Figure 2, where the box occupies a minimum volume and can be easily stacked with other boxes, which facilitates its storage or transport.

The manufacture of the crates is also facilitated, since they can be molded in the folded position of Figure 2, which only requires molds of reduced volume. This offers the additional advantage that the crates can be stacked. straight out of the mold, since they come out folded.

In a variant, the body could also be molded in a semi-folded position, which would have the advantage of halving the stresses to which the joints are subjected during the folding or complete unfolding of the breakage.

To unfold the body and put it in a ready-to-use condition, it suffices for example to pull on the corners corresponding to hinges 3 and 6.

The complete opening of the box requires some effort, since the bevels 7 of two adjacent panels form an angle slightly less than 90 'when these panels are parallel. The bevelled ends of two adjacent panels are thus compressed one on the other, when these panels form a right angle, so that there is no play at the joints when the body is completely unfolded.

In the case where the body must have a bottom, it is this bottom which serves to rigidly maintain the position of the side panels of the body.

A method of fixing a bottom 8 on a body is shown in Figure
3. The bottom 8 comprises for this purpose tenons 9 which come to block in the corresponding mortises 10 of the internal rim 2. It goes without saying that the bottom

In this way, the portions of tape intended to form the joints of the body being previously positioned in the mold, the polystyrene injected into the mold will invade these perforations, thus constituting a solid anchoring of the joints in the panels.

These perforations can be replaced by bosses and anchoring can be done in a similar manner, the expanded polystyrene then invading the interstices separating the bosses.

The tape 13 further comprises, regardless of the rsade of making the anchoring, two longitudinal bosses 14 disposed along its median axis.
