<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Reusable bottle and cap
The present invention relates to bottles which are normally closed by means of a hermetic crown cap, and a device for closing or recapping the bottle hermetically after the crown cap has been removed.
Bottles containing carbonated drinks or other liquids have long been sealed with crown stoppers. These crown stoppers make it possible to hermetically stopper bottles containing liquids which are more or less saturated with carbon dioxide, for example carbonated drinks. These crown caps are easy to remove-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ment by means of bottle openers, but they have the drawback that, once they have been removed from the bottles, they can no longer be reused to hermetically recap the bottles.
However, it is desirable, especially for large capacity bottles which often are not emptied once, to have a stopper which can easily replace the crown cap and be applied without tools to the bottle. open, which ensures that a new gas-tight closure is obtained and which is also able to withstand the pressure of the gas remaining in the recapped bottle.
The present invention resides in a bottle of the crown-stopper type which comprises the means necessary to seal it hermetically either with a conventional crown stopper or by an auxiliary stopper, in both cases ensuring a gas-tight and liquid-tight seal, the auxiliary stopper being capable, like the crown stopper, of withstanding the pressure of the CO2 or of another gas contained in the bottle.
When the bottle according to the invention has been opened by removing the crown cap placed on the ring provided for this purpose at the end of its neck and when the bottle has not been emptied completely, it is therefore possible to close it and to recap it hermetically by means of an auxiliary stopper so as to keep the liquid remaining in the bottle its gaseous character.
The invention generally consists of a bottle comprising (l) -a ring for a crown stopper at the mouth of its neck which allows it to be closed and hermetically sealed by means of a crown stopper. conventional and (2) a bayonet closure below the crown cap ring, which enables the bottle to be closed by means of an auxiliary cap. The bayonet closure is preferably provided in the reinforcement ring of the end of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
bottle which is an integral part of the neck and which is located below its ring for crown cap. The bayonet closure may be formed by projecting ribs provided around the neck or its reinforcing ring.
However, the use of ribs is not favorable to the fitting of the conventional crown cap. In fact, these protruding ribs risk being broken by the capping head used to apply the crown cap to the bottles; or.the crown caps may be improperly seated on their bush because the protruding ribs provided on the neck below the bush prevent the capping head from doing its job perfectly.
According to the invention, the bayonet closure provided on the neck reinforcing ring below the crown cap ring takes the form of grooves rather than protruding ribs. The bayonet closure according to the invention therefore preferably comprises at least two grooves in the reinforcing ring, each groove having an inclined part.
This inclined part of the grooves provided in the reinforcement ring is preferably connected to a substantially vertical part and to a substantially horizontal part of the groove.
By the expression "substantially vertical part" is meant a part of the groove which extends parallel to the axis of the bottle, while by the expression "substantially horizontal part" is meant the part of the groove. groove which extends substantially perpendicular to the axis of the bottle.
It should be noted that in this description the bottle is considered in its vertical or upright position, that is to say in a position in which its bottom rests on a horizontal surface.
It has proved to be preferable to provide two grooves dia-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
metrically opposed in the neck reinforcement ring according to the invention. However, more than two grooves can be used without departing from the scope of the invention. In the case where three or more grooves are formed in the reinforcing ring of the neck, these grooves are preferably arranged symmetrically around the reinforcing ring.
According to another feature of the invention, each groove is closed along its two sides, at least in its vertical part, while it is open on one side in its inclined part and / or in its horizontal part.
According to yet another feature of the invention, the horizontal part of each groove extends along the lower edge of the reinforcing ring.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an auxiliary stopper for a bottle of the specified type, this stopper having the form of an inverted cylindrical cup, the closed inner end of which is provided with a small washer. or disc of compressible material while at least two or more bosses are provided on the inner side surface of the auxiliary plug.
The dimensions of the small washer of compressible material are calculated so that it rests on and rests on the free outer edge of the neck, the washer then being flattened and compressed between the bottom of the auxiliary plug and the edge. of the neck when the stopper occupies its stoppering position so as to seal the bottle against gas and liquid.
The aforementioned washer, which preferably has the shape of a disc but which may also have the shape of a ring, is made, preferably, of a porous plastic material or of foam rubber or of cork or of any other material. what other elastic material that is liquid and gas tight and resistant to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
@ attacks of acidic or basic substances contained in the liquid of the bottle.
.The aforementioned bosses of the auxiliary plug are preferably placed at the same level and when there are two of them, they are diametrically opposed. On the other hand, when there are three or more in number, they are arranged symmetrically on the interior vertical surface of the skirt of the auxiliary closure.
The number of bosses and their relative position correspond to the number and the relative position of the grooves forming the bayonet seal associated with the reinforcing ring of the neck of the bottle.
Other objects and features of the invention will emerge from the detailed description given below with reference to the appended drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an auxiliary closure
Maire and the end for a crown cap of a bottle neck according to the invention, separated from one another, part of the stopper being torn off to show its internal structure;
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1, of the auxiliary stopper initially placed on the neck (seen in elevation), the stopper occupying a position in which its bosses are fully engaged in the vertical part of the grooves formed in the reinforcing ring of the bottle. and before the stopper has been rotated to stopper the bottle tightly by moving its bosses along the inclined and horizontal portions of the grooves; Fig. 3 is a developed view of the bottle neck for a crown cap showing the shape of one of the grooves in the neck reinforcement ring; the Fi'g. 4. is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig.2, in the direction indicated by the arrows;
Fig. 5 is a similar view along line 5-5 of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Fig. $ 2 also in the direction indicated by the arrows; and 'FIG. 6 is a view similar to that of FIG. 5 when the auxiliary plug has been rotated until its bosses are in contact with the corresponding stops provided at the ends of the horizontal portions of the grooves; Fig. 7 is a section taken along line 7-7 of FIG. 6;
and Fig. 7a is a view similar to FIG. 7 of a variant of the sealing washer,
The bottle B according to the invention comprises, in the vicinity of the free end of its neck, a mouth with a conventional crown cap comprising a ring for a crown cap 3 which forms an integral part thereof and which allows a cap to be applied thereto. conventional crown of the well-known type (not shown). A reinforcing ring 4 is provided below this crown stopper ring 3 and is also an integral part of the neck 2 and has a bulging part 4 ', as can be clearly seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 7.
Two grooves 6 are formed in the swollen part 4 'of the reinforcing ring 4 which comprises a lower horizontal annular peripheral edge 5. Each of the symmetrical and diametrically opposed grooves in the ring 4 comprises a vertical part 6a, an inclined intermediate part 6b and a horizontal part 6c. The vertical part 6a of the grooves 6 is delimited by two spaced vertical edges 7a while the inclined part 6b and the horizontal part 6c only have an upper edge 7b and 7c, this edge being divided by a notch 8 in the horizontal part 6c in two parts 7-le and 7 "c which extend horizontally at two different levels.
The inclined part 6b and the horizontal part 6c of the grooves are delimited at the bottom by the lower annular edge 5 of the reinforcing ring 4 '
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
As can be seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the vertical part 6a of each groove 6 is connected to its inclined part
6b by a rounded part 9.
The end of the horizontal part 6c of each groove! which is opposite at its end connected to the inclined part 6b of this groove ends in an oblique stop 10,
A conventional crown cap (not shown) can be applied to the end of the neck of the bottle described above by means of a conventional machine without being hampered by the aforementioned grooved reinforcing ring. This crown cap can be removed with a conventional bottle opener. To hermetically recap the open bottle, an auxiliary stopper 11 can be used, which here has the shape of a cylindrical cup which, when turned upside down, can be placed on the neck 2 of the open bottle B.
The bottom 12 of this auxiliary stopper 11 which is, for example made of plastic or metal or any other suitable material, comprises a cavity 13 in which a washer or ring 14 or 14a (Fig. 7a) made of compressible sealing material, for example porous plastic, foam rubber or cork, is glued or otherwise secured.
On the inner face of its lateral cylindrical wall 15, the auxiliary plug 11 comprises two bosses 16 which are diametrically opposed to one another. These bosses 16 are both at the same level and extend along the lower edge.
17 of the side wall 15 of the closure. As can be seen in Figs. 1 and 2, these bosses 16 decrease towards their two outer ends.
The length of each boss 16 is approximately equal to the width of the vertical portion 6a of the groove 6.
The vertical edges 16a of each boss 16 can therefore slide downward between the vertical edges 7a of the vertical part 6a
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
a groove 6 while their upper edges 16b can slide along the edges 7b and 7c of the inclined parts 6b and the horizontal parts 6c of the groove 6.
The distance between the upper edges 16b of the bosses 16 and the lower surface of the washer 14 when not compressed is slightly less than the distance between the part 7 "c of the edge 7c of the horizontal part 6c of the groove 6 and the upper edge of the cap ring crowns the neck of the bottle 3. Therefore, when the auxiliary cap is rotated to its sealed position, Fig. 6 and 7, a cam action occurs and the washer 14 is flattened under compression between the bottom 12 of the stopper 11 and the free edge of the ring for crown cap 3 so that the bottle is closed and corked in a perfectly gas-hmetic manner.
In practice, after having removed the usual crown-stopper which normally seals the bottle B hermetically and after having partially emptied the bottle, the auxiliary stopper 11 is applied to hermetically recap the bottle 'B as follows:
The auxiliary stopper 11 is applied to the open neck 2 of the bottle so that its bosses 16 are in line with the vertical parts 6a of the grooves 6 formed in the reinforcing ring 4. and it is pushed in in the direction indicated by the figure. arrow X in fig. 1 so that its diametrically opposed bosses 16 descend in the direction of arrow X into the vertical parts 6a of the two diametrically opposed grooves 6, the vertical edges 16a of the bosses 16 being guided by the vertical edges 7a and sliding along them. this.
When the auxiliary stopper arrives in the position shown in figs. 2, 4 and 5 'it is rotated around its axis in the direction indicated by the arrow Y on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Fig. 5, so that the upper edge 16B of the bosses 16 slides along the upper edges 7b, 7c of the inclined parts
6b and the horizontal parts 6c of the groove 6 until one of the vertical edges 16a of the bosses is in contact with the end stops 10 of the grooves 6. In this last position, which is shown schematically in the figures.
Fig. 6 and 7, the upper edges 16b of the corresponding bosses
16 are in contact with the part 7 "c of the upper edges 7c of the horizontal parts 6c of the grooves.
Consequently, the bosses 16 are kept in a hermetically sealed position on the bottle by the notches 8 and the stops 10 and the notches 8 prevent the auxiliary stopper 11 from rotating and accidentally opening.
To remove the auxiliary plug 11, before and while it is being rotated in the opposite direction to the direction indicated by the arrow Y, exert a downward pressure on the plug, in the direction indicated by the arrow. X, so that its bosses 16 can be released from the notch 8 and cross it by moving away from the stops 10. When the plug has thus been returned to the position shown schematically in FIG. 2, it can be easily removed vertically against the direction indicated by the arrow X. When using more than two grooves
6 and bosses 16, the auxiliary plug 11 is placed and removed in the same way.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the details of execution described to which changes and modifications can be made without departing from its scope.
