<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO SIGNALING DEVICES FOR CLASSIFICATION AND SIMILAR FILES"
The present invention relates to improvements made to signaling devices of the type used on filing files. Ois knows that the files are generally equipped with a desk intended in particular to support a reading tape * However, it is often desired to supplement the indications of this reading tape by. the addition of conventional signals or indexes, the installation of which is more or less complicated.
The main object of the invention is to eliminate this drawback and to provide a desk on which it is possible to

very easily mount one or more indexes of various shapes or colors, so as to increase the possibilities of signaling the entire file.
A device according to the invention comprises, on the one hand, a console of which at least one of the ends is provided with a largely longitudinal, and on the other hand, an index produced in one piece or by juxtaposition of several elements. each of which has a fixing pin, which can be slightly force-engaged in the console housing.
It will be understood that such a device makes it possible to easily mount an index or several index elements on the same end of a console, moreover considerably increasing the possible signaling combinations, given that 'the shape and color 4 of the visible part of the index or of its elements can be varied independently.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will make it possible to better understand the invention, the characteristics which it presents and the advantages which it is likely to provide.

Fig. 17 represents the lower face of another possible variant embodiment of an index according to the invention, obtained by juxtaposition of two elementary indexes.
The console A shown in fig. 2 and 6 is intended to be mounted in the known manner on support members fitted to the edge of a backrest. The front face of this console is designed to receive a reading strip (not shown) and at least one of these ends has the particularity of being provided with a blind cylindrical housing 1 oriented in the longitudinal direction. The console is further crossed by two slots 2 diametrically opposed relative to the housing 1, and which are cut at the location where the thickness of the pa-. king is minimum.
The index b shown in fig. 1, 3 and 4, and which corresponds to the console A, comprises a cylindrical axis 3 surmounted by a circular frame 4 on either side of which are endorsed two signaling pads 5 and 6. These latter are
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
preferably made of plastic and their colors may be identical or different, depending on the code adopted. It is understood that the installation is carried out in the simplest way by slightly force-engaging the axis 3 in the housing 1, the slots 2 giving the panel A sufficient elasticity to allow it to absorb the small deformation which results therefrom.
Of course, the index ± can be produced in any shape or color. In particular, the outline of the frame 4 can be of arbitrary shape.
According to the variant shown in FIG. 5, the frame 4 is equipped with a single patch 5. The latter cooperates with the rear face 7 of the frame 4, suitably colored to ensure the signaling.
According to the variant shown in FIG. 7, the console A is equipped with a housing 11 with a square cross section. To this housing corresponds the axis 12, also square, of an index c of the kind shown in FIG. 8 and 9. This axis 12 is surmounted by a head 13, with a square section, and the four visible faces of which can be colored at will in the same way or in different colors. This coloring can be carried out either in the mass or by gluing or by painting.
The console A shown in fig. 10 is similar to that shown in FIG. 2 and 6, with the difference that one hollow in the side wall of the housing 1, several longitudinal grooves 21, preferably provided four in number.
The axis 22 of the corresponding index d (fig. 11 and 12) is provided with an equal number of longitudinal ribs 23 which are capable of engaging in the grooves 21. If these
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The latter are distributed irregularly or asymmetrically along the periphery of the housing 1, it will be understood that the index d can be mounted on the console only in a single angular position. The orientation of its head 24 is therefore perfectly defined, which makes it possible to confer on the latter a polygonal transverse profile, the different faces of which, colored according to various dates, participate in the signaling by the simple fact of their orientation.
In the example shown in FIG. 11 and 12, it was assumed that the head 24 was a square section prism provided with slightly concave faces. If, on the contrary, the grooves 21 and the ribs 23 are distributed regularly as shown in the figures, the index d can occupy either four angular positions with respect to the console A.
The console A shown in fig. 13 differs from that which is shown in fig. 2 and 6 by removing the slots 2. Its edges are now devoid of any elasticity, an index e is mounted thereon, the axis 31 of which is made deformable. For this, the pin 31 is formed by a hollow cylindrical bush, the wall of which is crossed by longitudinal slots 32. This pin 31 can support any signaling head and in particular a frame 4 of the aforementioned type. The assembly of this index e. in the console is effected slightly by force, causing the slots 32 to tighten. To facilitate this assembly, it is of course possible to provide a conical entry chamfer at the lower end of the pin 31.
According to the variant shown in FIG. 15, there is provided in the console A a housing 41 with a cruciform profile. This housing is intended to receive the axis 42, also cruciform, with an index f. This axis 42 supports a signaling head
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Any Which may for example be constituted by a frame 4 or by a prismatic assembly of the kind that has been designated by the references 13 and 24. If the four branches of the cross which constitutes the transverse section of the housing 41 and of the axis 42 are equal, it can be seen that the index f can occupy four well-determined angular positions without distinction.
If, on the contrary, the branches of the crosses are of unequal length, the index f is uniquely positioned.
Naturally, each of the indexes b, c, d, e, f can be either made in one piece or constituted by the addition of several elementary indexes, the assembly of which is ensured when they are engaged in the housing 1- 11-21 or 41 corresponding. By way of nonlimiting example, a possibility of producing such a composite index has been shown in Fig. 17. This index is formed by juxtaposition of two elementary indexes 51 and 52, geometrically identical, each of which comprises an elementary axis 53 and a signaling element @ 54. Each xe 53 is produced along a prismatic axis which @ corresponds to half of a square prism, cut along a diagonal 55.
This plane also limits one of the faces of the element #; signal mount 54. It is understood that by juxtaposing the two elementary indexes 51 and 52, a composite index is obtained, the axis of which can be engaged for example in the housing 11 shown in fig. 7, this assembly simultaneously ensuring the connection of the two elementary indexes 51-52. The latter may be colored differently or bear on their visible part inscriptions or any conventional signs.
It should also be understood that the foregoing description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention, from which one would not depart.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
replacing the details of execution described by all other equi-; valents. In particular, one would not depart from the scope of the invention by arbitrarily combining the characteristics of the desks and of the indexes which have just been described simply by way of non-limiting examples. For example, the axis 53-53 of the composite index g could be fitted with an equally composite head similar to the heads 13 or 24 of the indexes c and d. Likewise, the head 24 of the index d could be replaced by a head 4-5-6 of the type shown in FIG. 4.
