<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements in the manufacture of oil-filled electric cables
The present invention relates to the. manufacture of electric cables with oil filling and more particularly their manufacture by the post-impregnation process.
In this process, the core of the cable comprising one or more conductors and the insulation which surrounds them is heated under vacuum in a tank so as to completely dry the insulation and free it of the air it contains. . Before impregnating the insulation with a suitable insulating fluid, hereinafter called oil, an impermeable sheath, normally made of lead or aluminum, is applied to the core of the cable which is pulled out of the tank to a control station. sheathing for this purpose, the vacuum being maintained between the tank and the sheathing station-and, consequently,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
inside the core while the sheath is applied.
It is obviously necessary to provide a device to ensure the sealing of at least the front end of the core of the sheathed cable as it leaves the sheathing station and this sealing device must allow subsequent introduction of the oil of impregnation. UK Patent No. 908,036 contemplates the use of a shutter provided with a valve and UK Patent Application No. 35658/62 discloses a suitable shutter construction. British Patent Application No. 30956/64 relates to a sealed shutter comprising a bearing which can be easily broken when it is necessary to access the interior of the sheathed cable. The object of the present invention is to provide another form of sealing device.
This being the case, the invention provides a device intended to be used in the manufacture of an electric cable comprising a sheathed core impregnated with an insulating fluid, this device comprising an end plug serving to seal off in a sealed manner. one end of the sheathed cable when the inside of the cable is evacuated before impregnation, the plug comprising a passage through which the core of the cable can be brought into communication with the outside and a material shutter magnetic to close the passage of the plug in a sealed manner, the plug being able to be moved magnetically to open the passage in order to allow the impregnation of the cable core by means of the insulating fluid.
The device for creating the magnetic field necessary to move the shutter is suitably mounted on a housing or an accessory capable of forming with the end of the plug a chamber in which a vacuum is first made to eliminate the difference in temperature. pressure prevailing on either side of the shutter and through which oil can be introduced into the cable through the passage unmasked by the movement of the shutter. The housing is advantageously a tube, one end of which is surrounded by a solenoid winding,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the shutter can be retracted in this end when a current is passed through the winding.
The invention also provides a method for manufacturing an electric cable by means of this apparatus. An end plug according to the invention will be described hereinafter by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a cross section of the end of a cable provided with the end plug, a device for opening the end of the cable, for evacuating therein and for introducing oil therein being shown schematically; and, FIG. 2 is a side view of a shutter which can be used instead of the one shown in FIG. 1.
The end plug shown in FIG. 1 of the drawing comprises a substantially cylindrical body 1 having an axial bore. An end portion 2 of the bore is large enough to receive a short end of the conductor 3 of a cable which has been stripped. Allen screws 5 screwed into threaded holes in the wall of the plug are tightened against conductor 3 and secure it to the plug. Part 6 of the bore which goes from the end of the conductor to the outer end of the body 1, that is to say the end remote from the cable, is of smaller diameter than part 2 and communicates with a oil channel 7 in the cable.
The part of the body 1 located around the part 6 of pike perch diameter of 1 bore is provided on the outside with means serving to ensure the etanoheity between the body and the sheath 8 of the cable which is applied to the insulation 4 and to the body 1 These sealing means comprise O-rings 9 of elastic material, housed in circumferential grooves 10 but slightly projecting from the general surface of the body 1 so that their elasticity ensures good sealing with the sheath.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A guard groove 11 is provided between the O-rings 9 and communicates with an opening 12 located near the outer end of the body through a conduit 13 parallel to the main bore of the plug. A vacuum source can be connected to a fitting 14 surrounding the opening 12 to remove any air which enters through the outer O-ring. The diameter of the body 1 is slightly reduced at its outer end so that the connector does not protrude outside the general shape of the plug.
At the outer end of the body 1, the bore 6 is closed by a valve 15, preferably made of steel. The valve has a short stem 16 and a larger diameter plate 17 formed by an end flange of the stem. The bore 6 has a flared portion 18 at its outer end and an elastic ring 19 seals in the space between the cylindrical surface of the rod 16, the adjacent radial surface of the plate 17 and the flared surface 18 of the bore. The pressure difference between the atmosphere and the core of the vacuum cable tends to hold the valve in place.
In a modified valve 15 'shown in FIG. 2, the rod 16' is long enough to receive a sealing device comprising two elastic O-rings 20 housed in grooves 21 formed in the rod. In this embodiment, the rod is engaged in the bore 6 which must not be flared.
The end part 22 of the body 1 is thinner and threaded at 23; the end part is a part welded to the main body 1. A tubular casing 24 having a closed end and an open end can be screwed at its open end onto this end part by means of an internal thread which is screwed on the step of via 23.
A sealing ring 25 is compressed between the open end of the housing and an annular face 26 provided on the end portion so that a vacuum-sealed chamber is delimited at the inside.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the housing through valve 15. the housing comprises a side tube 27 serving to connect it to a vacuum pump or to a source of impregnating oil via respective valves 28 and 29.
A solenoid 30 surrounds the outer end of the housing and it will be appreciated that when the housing, together with its side tube and its connections, have been evacuated to eliminate the pressure difference acting on the valve, current can be passed through it. the solenoid to magnetically move the steel valve away from the end plug bore hole in the solenoid at the outer end of the housing.
The interior of the cable is thus placed in communication with the interior of the box and through it with the oil source, without risking that air or moisture penetrates the insulation.
As the valve must be in place during the drying operation, that is to say before the existence of the above pressure difference, a device must be provided for fixing it to the stopper during this operation. A retaining nut screwed onto the external screw thread at the end of the plug is advantageously used for this purpose.
In practice, the post-impregnation process can follow the general lines described in British Patent Application Nos. 35658/62 or 26157/64. Briefly, a plug whose bore is closed by a steel valve or which is held in place by a retaining nut is attached to at least one end and preferably each end of a conductor of the. cable core. The core of the cable is placed in the tank and the drying operation is carried out. A tube connecting the mouth of the vessel to the sheathing station is then evacuated and the vacuum cable is pulled through the jacketing apparatus, the vacuum in the cable being maintained.
The sheath 8 applied to the insulation 4 of the cable core fits tightly around the two end plugs so that a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Ethanol vacuum system including sheathed cable and end plug. Housings as described above are then attached to the end caps in place of retaining nuts and both housings are evacuated. Current is then passed through the solenoid windings to move the valves apart. Oil is then introduced into the cable sheathed by one of the boxes, the other box still being connected to a vacuum pump. When oil appears in this other housing, the impregnation is complete.
