<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Luminous lifebuoy",
The present invention relates to a luminous lifebuoy for lifebelts, which differs from other buoys of this kind known and employed heretofore, in that it is completely devoid of inner tubes and that the production of the flammable gas 1. is regulated automatically with rational fuel consumption of the product from -. which said gas is generated and, consequently, with a better efficiency of the apparatus.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The luminous lifebuoys are, as we know, connected with a rope to the lifebelt, so that in the event of a shipwreck, the light shed by the combustion of the gases formed in contact with the buoy with water, signals from afar the position of the castaway for his rescue.
Light buoys of this kind ,. known until now, generally have two chambers, one of which contains the air essential for making the buoy float on the surface of the water, and the other contains the product which generates the flammable gas when comes into contact with water, a product generally consisting of calcium phosphide.
The device is provided in advance or at the time of its use, on the one hand, at the bottom of an opening for the entry of water intended to react with the gas-producing product, and, on the other hand, at the top of an opening for the escape of gas (hydrogen phosphide) produced by the reaction of water with calcium phosphide, a gas which ignites spontaneously when it comes into contact .with air, so as to spread a bright light indicating from afar the position of the castaway.
Light buoys of the above type, which float thanks to the presence of an air chamber, have the drawback that, as a result of heat or a lack of sealing between the two chambers, more or less gas can enter the inner tube causing a violent explosion endangering the people handling the buoy or the castaway using it.
These devices can also explode at rest as a result of the penetration of moist air, or at the time. where they are thrown into water, due to the formation of an explosive mixture of gas and air in the air chamber used to float the apparatus.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
To remedy the aforesaid serious drawbacks of light buoys known and used to date, the present invention relates to a luminous lifebuoy totally devoid of air chambers, which floats by the presence not of an inner tube, but of a mass of a material lighter than water, such as cork, plastic foam or the like. This system has the great advantage not only of avoiding the dangers inherent in the presence of an air chamber, but also of allowing better automatic control of the production of flammable gas: and; consequently, a more rational consumption of the product which by its reaction with water generates gas, and leads to a better efficiency of the apparatus.
The luminous buoy for life belts according to the present invention comprises two parts or chambers, the upper part of which is filled with a mass of a material lighter than water as a float, and the lower one constitutes a reservoir. containing the product intended to react with water to generate the flammable gas, tank open at the top and provided at the bottom with an orifice. The two chambers in question are separated by a plate, which simultaneously acts as a partition and as a closing plate for the lower tank. It is crossed at its center by a tube which extends along the longitudinal axis through the two chambers of the buoy and protrudes on either side with its two ends.
On these ends, which are provided with thread, can be screwed certain suitable parts, which therefore press against said plate which acts as a partition between the two chambers, that is to say between the upper chamber and the upper chamber. lower chamber of the device.
Said tube which passes through the buoy from top to bottom communicates
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
only by a lateral adjustment orifice aveo the lower chamber, that is to say with the tank which contains the product intended to react with water to generate the flammable gas. It is at both ends provided with an axially perforated inner plug, the two plugs in question being intended to house a rod, which fits perfectly tightly in the upper and lower orifices' to prevent a on the one hand, any water inlet, and, on the other hand, any gas escape.
This rod is articulated to a support, fixed to the guardrail of the boat, in such a way that when the life-belt, to which the luminous buoy is connected by means of a rope, is put to water, said rod is withdrawn from its housing, so as to open the two orifices normally closed, that is to say the lower orifice for the inlet of water and the upper orifice for the escape of the gas generated inside the buoy, and, consequently, to trigger the automatic functioning of the light outlet, that is to say the reaction of the calcium phosphide present in the lower chamber with water, with production of hydrogen phosphide,
which enters the central tube through the lateral orifice of the latter to finally escape through the upper orifice where it spontaneously ignites in contact with the oxygen in the atmospheric air.
The lower chamber contains an appropriate reinforcement, such as a wire mesh, a perforated plate or the like, having the function of separating the charge, that is to say the product which generates the flammable gas by its reaction with the gas. water, the walls of the chamber and the central tube in order to facilitate the contact of said product with water.
The construction and operation of the luminous water-life buoy according to the invention will emerge more clearly. of '' the following detailed description of an example of execution,

given purely by way of indication without any restrictive intention, and illustrated by the appended drawing, of which FIG. 1 represents a longitudinal section of a luminous lifebuoy produced in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 shows a side view of the support with the closing rod of the light buoy in question! , and Figure 3 shows a side view of the partially open light buoy floating on the surface of the water and in full operation.
It can be seen, with reference to the figures of the appended drawing, that the light lifebuoy according to the present invention consists of two parts or chambers, that is to say of an upper chamber 1 filled with a mass. a body lighter than water and acting as a float, and a lower chamber 2 filled with a charge 2 of the product intended to react with water to generate the flammable gas. These two parts $ or chambers are separated by a plate 4 acting as a partition between the chambers and as a perfectly sealed closure plate for the lower chamber 2 which contains the reactive charge.
This partition is crossed at its center by an axial tube. , securely attached to the bulkhead and crossing the buoy from top to bottom. Said tube 1 communicates through a lateral adjustment orifice 6 with the lower chamber and is provided with two axially perforated plugs 3 and 8, in which the rod, which functions in a perfectly sealed manner, fits perfectly. to close, 'on the one hand, the water inlet opening 10 and, on the other hand, the gas outlet 11.
Said rod .2 is provided with a stop 12 to adjust its position in the tube 2 and is articulated at the upper end of the support 13 fixed to the boat, so that when a castaway throws himself in the water with the rescue strap

It follows that, from this moment, the water enters through the orifice 10 of the tube to enter through the orifice 6 into the lower chamber 2 of the buoy and react there with the load. of the product which generates the flammable gas.
This remains first in said lower chamber until its pressure is high enough to first oppose the entry of water through orifice 6, and then, when its pressure rises more and becomes greater than that of water,

The so-called flame ignites intermittently, the periodic escape of the gas being regulated by the periodic entry of water into the lower chamber which contains the charge intended to produce the gas by its chemical reaction. with water.
The adjustment of the diameter of the orifice 6, by which alternately between the water and the gas leaves, allows the adjustment of the flow rate of the gas generated and therefore the intensity and duration of the flashes of light produced by the gas. apparatus.
One of the plugs 7 and 8 or else these two plugs can be arranged in the tube 5 or mounted on the rod 9. When the upper plug 7. is mounted on the rod 9, it is preferable that it be provided with a collar or - a similar device which is applied to the opening 11 of the apparatus to facilitate the penetration of said rod 9.
It goes without saying that the present invention is in no way limited to the exemplary embodiment described above and illustrated by the appended figures, but provides for all modifications and adaptations respecting its fundamental principle and remaining within the limits of the claims. formulated below. These modifications and adaptations may relate to the shape and dimensions of the various members of the apparatus, to the materials used during the manufacture of the apparatus, as well as to the manual or mechanical processes applied for this purpose. .
They also relate to the choice of the product used in the production of the flammable gas and, in addition, all the accidental, secondary or accessory circumstances with respect to the essence of the invention, which are of a nature to inter-
