<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Finalement, on

Process and apparatus for the continuous catalytic cracking of easily volatile hydrocarbons *
The present invention relates to a process for the continuous catalytic cracking of readily volatile hydrocarbons or of their mixtures, in particular of light gasoline, as well as to a device for the ease of carrying out said process.
The present invention relates more particularly to the preparation of a gas which is completely exchangeable against the heating gas forming during the coking of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
coal, that is to say a gas having the character of town gas. Like we milk. it is possible to produce, from easily volatile hydrocarbons, such as natural gas, liquefied gas and light gasoline, a combustible gas with high calorific value, by passing a mixture formed by the vapors of hydrocarbons and water vapor in tubes heated from the outside, in which is placed a suitable catalyst, in particular a very active nickel catalyst.
The preheated reaction mixture is heated as it enters the catalyst zone, which normally has a temperature between 750 and 805 ° C., whereby the cracking of the hydrocarbon molecules occurs with the formation of smaller molecules.
During the subsequent passage of the reaction mixture through the catalyst zone, the cracking products react with the water vapor, mainly giving rise to the formation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. By carrying out the operation in an appropriate manner, it is possible to obtain a combustible gas which consists mainly of hydrogen, carbon waves and light hydrocarbons, in particular methane, and whose calorific value and the corresponding density! to those of current town gas.
In this process, the time interval during which the reaction mixture entering the gold tube is heated to the temperature of the catalyst is of critical importance. This time interval, as has been observed, should be as short as possible, in order to keep as low as possible the formation of polymerization products, which mainly takes place during the so-called heating period.
This polymerization products
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which form with a finite speed from the products of the cracking of the initial hydrocarbon!, would in the long run penetrate into the catalyst, which would reduce its activity and would lead, finally, to a more or less complete stop of the cracking reactions *
If the cracking reactions are carried out under substantially normal pressure, or at most slightly above normal, up to about 2 atmospheres, it becomes generally possible
with reasonable sizing of the cracking tubes and materially controllable tube wall temperatures, heating the reaction mixture to catalyst temperature with such rapidity that the formation of polymerization products does not occur. has no time to occur, so that a continuous operation is obtained which only occasionally requires regeneration of the catalyst.
If, however, it is desired to carry out the oraquage under a significantly higher pressure, for example at a pressure of between 3 and 15 atmospheres, the polymerization reactions occur so rapidly that the formation of troublesome amounts of polymerization products is already occurring. completed before the reactions of the cracking products with water vapor start in the course of the operation. It is then no longer possible to maintain continuous operation.
The same effect is produced, although less pronounced under normal or slightly increased pressure, if a starting substance is used which tends, by its composition and its boiling zone, to cause the formation of molecular fragments. polymerizable when heated to 300 ° C

about up to about 800 * 0.
Limits, imposed by the nature of the materials and by the construction, prevent the heating time from being reduced by further heating the cracking tubes *,
It has now been found that it is possible to overcome the difficulties mentioned above by heating (in a heating zone without catalyst, provided upstream of the catalyst zone, inside the cracking tube, on the path of the flow of the reaction mixture consisting of hydrocarbon vapors, water vapor and, where appropriate, air, and through which all the components of the starting mixture pass) only the thermally insensitive components (water vapor, air), at a temperature of 800 to 850 * 0, while the hydrocarbon vapors are only heated,
separately, up to a temperature at which their decomposition by heat does not yet occur, an intimate mixture of the components, thus previously heated to different temperatures, taking place at the end of the heating zone, most quickly, before the mixture enters the catalyst zone.
The result is therefore, by virtue of the process according to the invention, that only the water vapor is subjected to a relatively long heating time, while the hydrocarbon vapors do not undergo, during their passage. of the heating zone, that a slight rise in temperature, but are nevertheless mixed, at the outlet of said heating zone, in an intense and extremely rapid manner, with the preheated water vapor, to be subsequently immediately conducted, in the catalyst zone, Moreover, the fact that only
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the water vapor comes into contact with the very hot inner wall of the cracking tubes *, allows the temperature of said wall to be pushed up to the extreme limits allowed by the materials, if necessary,
which would not be possible if the vapors of the hydrocarbon could also come into contact with the wall of the tube.
Since the proportion between the water vapor and the hydrocarbon vapors is generally 2 'or 3 to 1, it is ensured, at the end of the heating range, to have available under high thermal conditions. , a sufficient amount of heat to suddenly raise the temperature of the hydrocarbon vapors.
It has been found that it is not absolutely essential to bring all the water vapor to a high temperature, separate from the hydrocarbon vapors, in the heating zone, but that it is also sufficient, to achieve the aim of the invention, to preheat, at high temperature, a fraction of 60 to 80% of said water vapor, while the rest of the latter is passed, with the vapors of 'hydrocarbon, separately by stream of water vapor, through the heating zone.
When more water vapor is added, air also forms a component of the starting mixture (generally in the proportion of 7 parts by volume of water vapor to one part by volume of air), this air can be added to steam to be preheated to an elevated temperature. If necessary, this air can also be passed through the heating zone, separated both from the hydrocarbons and from the water vapor, and only mixed with the other components at the end of said zone.
The accompanying drawing illustrates in vertical section a

cracking tube produced for the implementation of the process according to the invention.
The furnace in which the stripping tube is located, where appropriate together with other stripping tubes of the same structure, as well as the furnace heating installations, not being essential to the description of the present invention, are not shown in the drawing.
The cracking tube is denoted by 1, and it is usually made of hot stainless steel * In the upper part of the oraquage tube there is provided a heating zone 2 and, in the lower part, a catalyst zone 3. The heating zone 2 is subdivided into several annular zones by concentric tubes 4 and 5, nested one inside the other. The outer annular zone is connected to a supply pipe 6, and the inner annular zone to a supply pipe 7.
Line 6 exits at the feed, into the heating zone, either all or a partial amount of 60 to 80% of the water vapor. The water vapor flows downwardly through the annular heating zone and arrives, at a temperature of at least 800. in a mixing zone 9 which is delimited, at its lower part, by the catalyst 3. through the pipe 7 are fed .., in the inner annular zone of the tube 4, the hydrocarbon vapors, which are generally preheated to a temperature of around 300 *.
There is naturally some heating of the hydrocarbon vapors during their downward journey, but this scaling can be limited to a non-critical sub-temperature, in particular by passing downwards through the inner annular zone. , part of the water vapor with the hydrocarbon vapors. Finally, we
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the relatively small amount of reaction air is introduced through tube 45, which is passed through the heating zone. at the end of the heating zone, the air is used, inside the tube 4, at part of the hydrocarbon vapors in a combustion chamber 10.
The exothermic reaction causes a rapid rise in temperature of this fraction of the hydrocarbon vapors.
The combustion products, together with the other partial stream of the hydrocarbon vapors, reach the mixing zone 9, where they quickly and intensely mix with the water vapor previously heated to a temperature. high, so that the above-mentioned critical temperature zone can be quickly passed.
Then, the mixture thus prepared enters the catalyst zone 3. This, in this case, also has an annular shape, owing to the arrangement of a tubular delivery element 11.
For. to deviate, from a direction mainly parallel to the axis, to a radial direction, the direction of flow of the mixture in the main zone of the storm, and thus improve the contact of the whole reaction mixture with the heated wall of the oraquags tube, the delivery element 11 is provided, in this case, in the region of the main storming zone, with a sheet metal strip 12, of helical shape, which constantly brings the mixture back to reaction against the hot wall of the tube.
The configuration of the main cracking zone,. in the form shown, however, does not constitute any essential characteristic of the present invention. It is also possible to provide this main hull zone, without accessory members or delivery element!

! under the volume of a cylindrical chamber, uniformly filled with catalyst.
The finished gas, hot, leaves the crqus tube by the lower end and this then subjected, in the known manner, to the other treatments.
As already mentioned, the cracking tube itself is placed, together with other tubes of / configuration, in a furnace of circular or rectangular section, lined with a refractory material. The tubes * are heated using burners placed in the upper or lower part, inside the oven. The hot combustion gases flow along the tubes and are then discharged from the furnace separately from the useful gas.
