Preparation of dialkyl esters of terephthalic acid.
The present invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of dialkyl esters of terephthalic acid, in particular of alkyl terephthalates in which the alkyl groups contain from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
It is known that the dialkyl esters of terephthalic acid can be obtained by reacting this acid with an aliphatic alcohol of 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid. This esterification requires a large excess of alcohol and the presence of large amounts of sulfuric acid, considerable losses of alcohol occurring through formation of large amounts of dialkyl ethers during esterification which is lengthy.
According to the present invention, the esterification of terephthalic acid with an aliphatic alcohol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms per molecule is carried out in the presence of isophthalic acid.

Using the above reaction mixtures, the esterification can be carried out in a substantially quantitative manner over a period of 1/2 to 2 hours at temperatures *) of 60

22.3 parts (b) the lower phse contains 25.5 parts of sulfuric acid, 2.5 parts of acid esters, 6.3 parts of dimethyl isophthalate and 5.1 parts of water.
After washing with 5% sodium carbonate solution, distilled water, then drying, the diester phase which weighs 20 parts is found to contain essentially dimethyl isophthalate *
By repeating the process of the example, but omitting the dimethyl ophthalate from the reaction mixture, only a 76% yield of impure direthyl terephthalate is obtained (melting point 125 C.
Likewise, when esterifying terephthalic acid with ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol or n-butanol, the use of isophthalic acid or its dialkyl esters as indicated above. above, makes it possible to obtain the following advantages: better yields of dialkyl terephthalate, shorter reaction times and absence of side products.
Although the process is well suited for batch operation, it can advantageously be applied to continuous esterification processes, because the reaction mixture can be collected and recycled to the process.
