<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Method and devices for the manufacture of mattresses of whole thermoplastic fibers, in particular organic fibers.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of mattresses of fibers of thermoplastic materials and in particular of organic fibers. It refers more particularly to the manufacture of such mattresses obtained from fibers produced by centrifugation and in particular fibers produced by bringing the material in the viscous state inside a hollow body at the periphery of which orifices are provided and which are rotated at high speed around its axis.
These fibers are entrained below the centrifugal body in the form of a tubular sheet which is collected on a gold.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
receiving gane, in particular a conveyor belt *
According to a process proposed by the Applicant, in particular for the manufacture of mineral fibers, and in particular of glass fibers, the tubular sheet of fibers is made to act on:
be the producing organ and the receiving organ, one or more gas streams directed against this sheet so as to cause its deformation and to distribute the fibers thus dispersed in a volume of which the contact surface with the receiving organ covers the entire width of the latter, this volume possibly being confused with a substantially planar web.
This process is indeed very effective for the distribution of short fibers in a homogeneous mat and is particularly advantageous in the case of the manufacture of glass fiber matresses *
It is known, on the other hand, to dispose below the producing member, between the latter and the receiving member, blowing members supplied periodically so as to cause reciprocating displacement of the valve. tablecloth and therefore a scan of the receiving organ.
The Applicant has observed that it is not possible, without encountering serious drawbacks, to use these methods for the distribution on a receptor member of long fibers and in particular of fibers which have a certain crimp and therefore have the property of clinging to each other, as is particularly the case with organic fibers.
In fact, as a result of their tendency to curl up and to cling to each other, the fibers form a sort of wick which it is impossible to deform and one cannot obtain a uniform mattress in density. and in thickness *
The object of the present invention is a process which eliminates these drawbacks and which enables a homogeneous mat of fibers to be obtained if these fibers are long and obtained from
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
organic materials. This process consists in modifying in an asymmetrical and variable manner the pressure regime prevailing in an annular zone surrounding the centrifuge member from which filaments of viscous material are projected.
It is observed that under aus conditions, the formation of strands is eliminated in large proportions and that the web of fibers is balanced from one edge to the other of the receiving organ ee resulting in the obtaining of a homogeneous mattress of regular thickness.
According to another particularly important characteristic of the invention, in a part of the annular zone surrounding the centrifuge body there is an overpressure with respect to the pressure regime in the rest of this annular zone then, conversely, an overpressure. overpressure in the zone diametrically opposite to the first part, this succession being repeated to carry out the sweeping of the conveyor member by the tubular sheet of fibers * The invention provides in particular to protect against the induction of air a part of this annular zone while in the! opposite part of the zone, an air induction is carried out, and a periodic permutation of these different zones is ensured, so as to cause a rocking of the tubular sheet of fibers from one edge of the receiving member to the other.
The invention also provides for directing gas streams, themselves driven by a periodic movement, towards the annular zone surrounding the centrifuge member, in order to act directly on the orientation of the fibers escaping from the centrifuge member and obtain the rocking motion of the sheet of fibers on the receiving organ.
The invention also relates to devices for implementing this method.
According to a first device, one causes, periodically, an induction of air in a part of the annular zone
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
surrounding the centrifuge member by means of a blowing crown, the air being induced between this crown and the peripheral band of said centrifuge member.
The invention in particular provides for the use of a blowing ring entirely surrounding the centrifuge member, this ring, while remaining at the same level, being moved periodically relative to the centrifuge member. Under these conditions, the zones in which induction takes place vary periodically, the zone opposite to that where maximum air induction takes place being a zone where practically no air induction takes place,
According to another device, deflector flaps are used which are driven by a periodic movement making it possible either to free the air access in a part of the annular zone surrounding the centrifuge body, or on the contrary to oppose this undue. * air tion.
These deflectors can be driven by a rotational movement bringing them alternately in a horizontal or inclined position and in a vertical position. They can also be driven by a translational movement.
According to one embodiment, the invention provides for surrounding the centrifuge member with a blowing ring, this ring being driven by a rocking movement, this rocking being carried out so that the gas streams direct the flow. sheet of fibers alternately from one edge to the other of the receiving member.
According to another embodiment, use is made of blowing ramps arranged on either side of the centrifuge member and which are driven by back and forth movements in the opposite direction, these blowing ramps being able to be supplied with power. alternately in pressurized fluid.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the following description, with reference to the appended drawings which show various embodiments given to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
as examples of devices according to the invention *
In the various figures of the accompanying drawings,
shown in 1 the centrifuge body in which the material is fine in the viscous state and in 2 the basket with perforated side wall ensuring the distribution of said material over the entire height of the peripheral band 3 of the member centrifuges The streams of material projected out of the orifices of the peripheral band 3 are subjected to the action of a gas jet exiting the orifices or the slot 4 of an annular ring $ coaxial with the rotating body,
this action having the effect of stretching the fine fiber bundles which form a tubular sheet 6 under the centrifuge body. This sheet is spread over a member such as a conveyor 7 to form a mattress therein * The conveyor 7 is, in the case of all the figures assumed to move in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the said figures *
In the embodiment shown rod 1,
the device comprises a blowing ring 8 through the orifices or slit 9 from which escape gaseous jets substantially parallel to the axis of the centrifuge body. This crown surrounds the rotating body and is placed at a higher level than the zone where the threads of matter are projected.
The blowing crown 8 is driven by a reciprocating movement perpendicular to the axis of the centrifuge body * In the position shown freeze 1, for which the crown 8 is moved to the right, we see that the induced air can pass into the part 10 situated between said crown and crown 5, while in the diametrically opposed part 1a practically no induced air can pass. As a result, in this position, the sheet of fibers is deformed towards the left and that it comes towards the left outer edge of the conveyor 7. When the crown 8 occupies the reverse position of the previous one, the opposite effect occurs. , the air induction occurring at 10a and being practically interrupted at 10.
The web of fibers then reaches the right edge of the conveyor. We thus obtain a balance
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
surround the sheet of fibers from one edge to the other of the conveyor and consequently a regular deposit of fibers over the entire width of said conveyor, resulting in a homogeneous mattress.
In the variant shown in fig. 2, the blowing ring 8 is identical to that of the rod 1 but it is driven by an oscillating movement which has the effect of varying the sections of the passages 11 and bed and, consequently, the induced air, alternating - ment on one side and $ 1 on the other side of the centrifuge.
The device of FIG. 3 comprises plane deflector flaps 12-12a which can oscillate around axes 13-13 * located in a plane located above the projection zone of the fileta of material. These deflectors are each animated by an oscillatory movement around these axes $ these movements, equal in amplitude, being offset in the heel phase only when a deflector is in a vertical position (position for which the Induction air is minimum),
deflector otter is in a horizontal or raised position (position for which the air induction is maximum),
In the variant shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the deflectors 14 and 14s arranged vertically are driven in a reciprocating movement parallel to the direction of advance of the tram member 1 carrier.
Fig. 6 shows another device comprising two blowing rams 15 and 15a arranged above the zone of projection of the filaments out of the orifices of the peripheral band of the centrifuge body. These breaks are arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the conveyor member. They can be supplied alternately with pressurized fluid or be supplied continuously.
In the latter case, they can be animated by an oscillating movement around their axis (fig. 7) like the deflectors 13-13a of fig 3, or pull entwined with a back and forth movement ( fige 8 and II.-) like the deflectors 14- 14m in fig. 5.
Ramps can also be used in combination.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
blowing and the. Deflectors, The air ducts can be semicircular in shape and be used in conjunction with semi-circular deflectors.
FIG. 10 shows an arrangement according to which one associates with a blowing ring, such as the ring 8 of the arrangement of FIG. 1 which is driven by a reciprocating movement perpendicular to the axis of the centrifuge body, a cylindrical screen 16 attached externally to the. known as the blowing crown.
The screen 16 adds its action to that of the crown to on the air induction currents * This screen can be continuous or formed of two cylinder portions.
Such screens can be associated with blowing ramps, for example with the blowing ramps 15-15a of the preceding arrangements.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 11, the device according to the invention does not include a blowing ring to act on the air inductions. This action is obtained by means of a cylindrical screen 17 which is driven by a reciprocating movement perpendicular to the axis of the centrifuge body and which, during this movement, channels the induction currents so in giving the sheet of glass fibers a rocking movement from one edge to the other of the conveyor member.
