<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Back pressure boot filler valve."
The present invention relates to filling valves, intended for backpressure boot fillers and, more particularly to a backpressure filling valve, arranged to increase the filling speed of the boots. boots by carbonated drinks such as beer.
Conre-pressure fillers are generally used to fill containers with carbonated beverages such as beer and so-called carbonated beverages. The filling operation poses problems relating to the introduction of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the drink in the container with as little agitation as possible, so as to keep the CO2 gas in solution, to prevent the liquid from foaming as a result of the evolution of gas from the drink.
One of the methods of preventing agitation of the beverage is to employ a spreader member to direct the beverage to the side of the can. This process has only been partially successful with regard to the boxes, due to the high flow velocities required for the liquid due to the constriction of the flow in the valves.
The present invention is designed to increase the rate of bunch filling by increasing the rate of liquid flow and avoiding unnecessary agitation.
One object of the present invention is to increase the speed of filling a wide-necked container, such as a flat-top boot.
Another object of the invention is to provide a boot filling valve for back pressure fillers which gives a tangential component to the stream of liquid entering the boot.
Another object of the invention is to provide a filling valve for flat top cans or the like, in which the liquid which enters the boot is directed towards the side of the boot, with a swirling motion.
Another object of the invention is to provide a precise stop device for the liquid entering the boot.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a filling valve for a back pressure filling machine which provides substantially exact volumetric filling of the boot.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a filler / back pressure boot valve, in which the back pressure air is vented from the top of the boot without passing through the liquid.
Yet another object of the invention is to supply the liquid through several nozzles of a back pressure boot filling machine, so as to minimize the dripping of the nozzles following the expansion.
Another object of the invention is to provide a back pressure filler valve for boots, in which the height of the liquid flow stopper can be adjusted.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a boot filler valve, for back pressure fillers, which eliminates restrictions as to the flow section and the flow rate of the liquid.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a boot filler valve which prevents the back pressure air contained in the boot from bubbling through the liquid contained in the boot. bowl of the filling machine.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a back pressure filler valve, which ensures precise application of the liquid valve to its seat upon completion of the filling operation.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a boot filler valve, making use of nozzles to supply the liquid, into which the draining nozzles, following the completion of the operation of the boot. filling, is prevented.
Still other objects of the invention will become apparent on reading the description which follows and which, taken in conjunction.

tion with the accompanying drawings, illustrates a preferred form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the boot filler valve produced in accordance with the present invention and shows this valve in sealed engagement with a boot.
Figure 2 is an axial vertical section of the gas charge valve in the closed position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section through the groove of the liquid valve, the latter being in the open position.
Figure 4 is a vertical section similar to Figure 3, showing the liquid valve in the closed position.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a bottom view of the valve, showing the liquid nozzles and the air shutoff valve.
Reference is now made to the drawings and, more particularly, to FIG. 1; the bowl of the filler may include an annular outer wall 12, connected in one piece to a bottom member 13. A cover (not shown) covers the open top of the bowl of the filler:
The bowl is filled with a liquid 14 to a determined height and a pressurized gas is introduced into the top of the bowl of the filler, in a region marked 15, to keep the carbon dioxide in place. solution in liquid.
Several openings 16 pierce the bottom of the filler bowl at its periphery, to receive filler valves, bearing general reference 20 and forming the subject of the present invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The filler valves 20 are introduced through the bottom of the filler bowl and are secured there by forked clamps 22 and bolts 23. The clamps 22 have outwardly extending fingers 24 (Figure 3) which engage under outwardly extending protrusions 25 located on the outside of the valve to force the valve into fixed engagement with the bottom of the filler bowl.
Stuffing members 26 (figure 3) prevent liquid from leaking out of the bowl of the filler, around the valve
Reference is now made to Figure 4; the valve has a stem 28 having a hollow passage 29 therethrough which permits the flow of gas from the backpressure gas region 15, to the boot 30 being filled.
The flow rate to the box 30 is regulated by a gas regulating valve, bearing the general reference 32 and shown in detail in FIG. 2. The gas valve 32 comprises a sleeve 34, pushed upwards by a spring loaded. low compression 35 and having openings 36 which pass therethrough and which are intended for the passage of gas.
A valve seat 37 is provided in a head 38 of the sleeve and rests against the top of the valve stem 28, so that when the valve 32 lifts air or other suitable gas passes through it. opening 36 downwards, through the hollow passage 29, to enter the box 30
Head 38 is lifted by a cam follower 40 which pushes upwardly against the base of a coil head to lift the valve. The follower is actuated by a cam mounted on the outside of the bowl.
The valve stem 28 passes downwardly through a spring housing 43 which forms an extension of a valve housing 45. The spring housing has a pair of openings.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
opposing spaced apart vertices 46 which allow liquid to penetrate the interior of the spring case 43 and flow downward through the opening 47 and the valve shell 45.
A second series of openings piercing the valve shell 45 is shown at 48. Liquid entering through the openings 46, 47 and 84 passes downward through a Venturi groove 52. The valve stem 28 extends downward. bas-, by the passage 52 and by an opening provided in a valve body 55.
The valve body 55 has an annular opening, containing a V-block packing, 56, surrounding the stem 28 to prevent passage of liquid through the valve body. The lower end of the rod 28 carries a round ring 47 which sits in an annular recess 58 in the lower part of the body, to stop gas leaks upwards, while the liquid valve is open and that we charge the gas box. The aforementioned Venturi throat 52 leads the liquid down the bowl to a liquid valve 60.
Liquid valve 60 is secured to valve stem 28 by a loose fitting frame 60 'to give valve 60 sufficient freedom of movement to ensure even application of valve 60 to valve seat 61. The connection between the armature and the valve stem is established by a spring washer 63. The valve 60 comprises a descending button member 65 which receives an annular rubber molding 66 having two annular faces which sit on the faces. annulars of the valve seat 61.
The valve seat has openings which: communicate with nozzles 68 opening into the boot 30
Nozzles 68 pass outward and down
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
and have an outwardly directed component and a taential component, so that the liquid entering the boot 30 does so with an outward movement and a whirling motion, thus following the contour of the boot downwards, until 'at the bottom, and avoids the agitation of the liquid.
The spring case 43 / Contains a lightweight compression spring 61 which is mounted between a base 62 of the valve casing and a cylindrical guide block 64 which slidably fits the upper end of the casing. spring. A round ring 64 'locates the guide block symmetrically on the vent rod 28, so that the normal upward pressure of the spring on the guide block 64 tends to open the valve 60, against the downward pressure. of the liquid.
The lower end of the valve body 55 has a threaded opening 70 into which the valve stem 28 discharges. A ball cage 72, having an inwardly folded upper end, 74, receives a corresponding piece. Soft rubber tee 75, having a hollow groove extending therethrough and communicating with the hollow valve stem 28 to form a large diameter soft rubber seat 77, provided to a ball valve 76.
The ball valve 76 is made of hollow plastic - thin, so as to be light and to float high on the liquid rising in the boot. The valve cage 72 is threaded at its upper end to screw into the threaded opening 70 of the valve body 55 and be secured there by a locking nut 78. The cage 72 can therefore be adjustably located in the body. valve 55, to vary the height of the orifice mouth and hence the filling stop point.
At the end of the filling operation, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
nozzles 68 extend below the surface of the liquid contained in the boot 30 and, at this time, the ball 76 rises, engages / engages the seat 77 of the throat and stops the flow of air 'from the top boot, to the back pressure gas region 15.
At this point, the cam follower 40 moves down and closes the gas valve 32; it continues to descend to close the liquid valve 60, which definitively cuts off communication between the interior of the bowl and the box 30
At this moment of the rotation of the bowl, a cam (not shown), carried by the frame of the machine, hits a button
80 of an expansion valve 81, which allows air to pass from the top of the boot, through the connecting passages 84 85
86 and 87 and outwards, by the expansion valve, which reduces the pressure in the top of the boot 30 to the value of atmospheric pressure.
The boot is then lowered / onto a support (not shown), out of engagement with a sealing rubber 88 and out of the path of a collar 89 and is then removed from the filling machine by a spider (not shown) and transmitted to an obturator.
OPERATION
In operation, the bundles 30 are mounted on two supports (not shown) by a spider (not shown), while the filler rotates around a fixed center.
The support lifts the boots 30 and brings them into contact with the padding 88 by applying a certain force below the boot to form a tight seal between the boot and the padding:
88
After the seal has been established with the packing 88, - a cam (not shown), mounted on the stationary part of the filling machine, causes a follower 40 which comes into contact with
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
the top, coil-shaped, 41, to open the gas control valve 32 and allow air to pass through the opening 36 and down through the central vent opening 29 of the valve 28, through the groove of the rubber nipple 75, past the valve 76 which is then away from its seat and rests on a pin 90, and in the boot.
The pressure in the boot then rises to a pressure equal to the pressure of the gas in the region 15 of the top of the bowl of the filler. It should be observed at this point that the gas valve is kept away from its seat by the pressure of the spring 35. As the pressure prevailing in the box rises, the pressure also rises under the liquid valve 60, the pressure being transmitted from the boot, upwards, through the nozzles 68
When the pressure prevailing in the boot is approximately equal to the pressure prevailing in the top of the bowl, the pressure under the valve 60, increased by the pressure of the spring 61 acting on the guide block 64, opens the valve 60. As soon as the valve 60 is sufficiently removed from its seat, the spring 61 causes it to rise to the fully open position.
The liquid then flows from the bowl of the filler, downwards, through the openings 46, 47 and 48 through the Venturi throat -52, through the valve 60, past the molding 66, through the nozzles 68 and in the boot 30.
As the liquid passes through the nozzles 68, the outwardly directed components of the nozzles give the liquid a radially outwardly directed velocity and the tangential components of the nozzles impart to it a, twist, movements which combine for cause the liquid to flow outward, in an expanding spiral

outwards, to come into contact with the sides of the boot, and to flow evenly downwards, to the side, while turning. This whirling causes the liquid to reach the bottom of the can in an even flowing motion and prevents agitation of the liquid entering the boot.
As the liquid enters the boot, the back pressure gas is moved upwards, past the check ball valve 76, through the hollow groove of the nipple 75, back upwards through the passage 29 of the pressure rod. valve 28, through valve 32 and back into the top of the bowl.
When the liquid rises in the boot 30 enough to float the valve 76, it rises with the liquid which covers the lower ends of the nozzles 68. The valve 76 then rises until it is on. the point of coming into contact with the nipple. During the period when the liquid rises in the boot 30, the gas is ejected therefrom through the insert or the flexible rubber nipple 75 and passes upwards, into the upper part of the bowl of the filler.
As the valve 76 approaches the mouth of the nipple 75, the section offered to this exhaust gas decreases, which increases the speed of flow through the nipple 75. This increase in speed tends to apply pressure. ball on the mouth of the nipple, which completely stops the ar current coming from the boot and passing towards the bowl of the filler.
As soon as the flow of gas from the boot stops due to the tight application of the ball 76 on the nipple 75 the subsequent rise of the liquid in the boot creates additional pressure on the top of the liquid contained in the boot , a pressure which is greater than the pressure of the liquid acting downwards from the bowl, this increase in the pressure of the liquid contained in the box stopping the flow of liquid through the valve 60 and stopping any subsequent filling.

quent of the box.
At this point in the cycle, a cam (not shown;) comes into contact with the follower 40, closes the gas valve
32 and continues its downward movement to close the liquid valve 60. When the valve 60 is closed, another cam (not shown) contacts the button 80 to open the relief valve 81 and allow the release valve to be closed. The pressurized air, present in the top of the boot, passes upwards through the connecting passages 84 85 86 and 87 and towards the outer atmosphere.
The boot can then be lowered by the support (not shown) and put out of contact with the sealing rubber 88 and out of the path of the collar 89, to allow the box to be removed from the filling machine by a spider and its t-ransfer to an obturator where it receives its cover and is closed.
It will be understood that the form, described above, of the invention is only a preferred embodiment thereof and that various modifications of the size, shape and arrangement of the elements can be made without having to worry about it. to depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
