EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

EMI1.1
BELGIAN SOCIETY OF AZOTE m DES EMDUITS CHEMIQUES DU 111'RT; T "BROCEDE Jb4M DECOMPOSITION DEVICE THEEMIQOE DHiDE4CiJBBB The present invention relates to a process and a device for thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons into less saturated hydrocarbons, including in particular acetylene and ethylene or other olefins.
To prepare acetylene and / or olefins from hydrocarbons such as methane, natural gas, gasoline and hydrocarbon oils, the latter, in the gaseous or vaporized state, are brought to an elevated temperature. of the order of 1100 to 1500 c and even more, in particular by partial combustion, using oxygen or air, or by injection into hot gases resulting from the combustion of a fuel preferably rich in hydrogen .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
If high yields of unsaturated hydrocarbons are to be obtained, it is important to control the pyrolysis time of the hydrocarbon and to keep it within narrow limits, since at the high temperatures required, these reaction reactions. pyrolysis do not constitute equilibria. They continue to evolve as a function of time with degradation of the unsaturated hydrocarbons formed in the first phase. Thus, in the case of pyrolysis of hydrocarbons to acetylene by partial combustion, the reaction time must be between 0.001 and 0.005 seconds and it depends in particular on the nature of the hydrocarbon and the characteristics of the chamber. reaction.
The duration of pyrolysis of the hydrocarbons is limited by abruptly cooling or quenching the gases formed to a temperature as low as 500 to 600 c temperature at which the unsaturated hydrocarbons produced are frozen in their state at this time without the possibility of evolution later.
Many methods and devices have already been proposed so far, most advantageously by transverse injection of cold water into the pyrolysis gases. However, they have certain drawbacks, especially during their application on an industrial scale, because they do not make it possible to obtain, perpendicularly to the gas flow axis, a sufficiently precise cooling plane which guarantees all gas streams pyrolyze the marl reaction time.
According to the present invention, the operating flexibility of the pyrolysis furnaces is increased by carrying out the reactions for the formation of unsaturated hydrocarbons in a chamber of adjustable volume, the length of which is adjusted by carrying out the sudden cooling of the gases obtained from the gas. pyrolysis using a cold liquid screen, perpendicular to the flow of these gases and capable of being moved in a direction parallel to the axis of the furnace.
This screen can be obtained, for example, by spraying liquid from a central sprayer, located in the axis of the pyrolysis chamber and the poaition of which can be varied on this axis. However, the projected liquid, whose living force
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
must be sufficient to avoid a deflection of this screen by the gas current, gives rise to the formation of a jet squirting in all directions, at the points of impact with the wall of the furnace. A premature cooling of a large part of the evolving gases thus occurs, to the detriment of the yield of unsaturated hydrocarbons.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention consists in using a furnace for the thermal treatment of hydrocarbons, this furnace comprising in particular a reaction chamber formed of two parts, the first of which is extended by the second, this second part being obile with respect to at the first, along the axis of the furnace, and comprising devices for transverse injection of quench liquid into the stream of gases leaving the reaction chamber. By moving the second section relative to the first, the length of the reaction chamber is varied and hence the duration of the reaction.
In general, the reaction chamber is circular and the second part, which is movable, consists of a sleeve movable along the axis of the reaction chamber.
The process of the present invention and the device, which has just been described, allow the length of the reaction chamber to be varied so that the reaction time can be modified and adjusted so as to obtain the maximum content of Desired unsaturated hydrocarbons. They also make it possible to treat, in the same furnace, various hydrocarbons which require different pyrolysis times, which was hardly possible with the furnaces used previously.
This embodiment of the present invention is particularly advantageous when a dynamic liquid screen is formed along the wall of the pyrolysis chamber, either internally to protect it from carbon deposits formed during the reaction or externally. to protect it thermally. This protective screen is spread over the sudden cooling screen, thus forming a hydraulic seal between the sleeve and the pyrolysis chamber, and preventing any infiltration of pyrolysis gas.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Most preferably, water is used to form the protective wall shield and to quench the reaction gases. '
However, other liquids can be used, such as non-flammable oils at the temperatures in the reaction chamber. The use of oils is particularly advantageous because the oils are more coherent than water and they form a particularly gas-impermeable hydraulic seal between the sleeve and the reaction chamber. In addition, hydroarburized oils have the advantage of leading to a partial purification of the pyrolysis gases, by reducing the content of these gases of higher homologs of acetylene and of hydrocarbons with more than four carbons.
This method of controlling the reaction time is applicable to all cases of thermal decomposition reactions of hydrocarbons and in particular by partial combustion or by injection into superheated steam or hot gases, where the reaction time should be carefully limited and controlled ...
For a given production of the pyrolysis furnace, a maximum adaptation is reached, by continuously adjusting the level of quenching of the pyrolysis gases according to the results of the analyzes of these gases. The length of the reaction chamber and hence the pyrolysis time are thus continuously corrected so that the content of unsaturated hydrocarbons in the gases formed remains practically constant and maximum.
On the other hand, it has been observed that, thanks to this process, it is possible to vary the production of unsaturated hydrocarbons from the same pyrolysis furnace. Thus, the production capacity of a given furnace can range from 100% to 65%. It suffices to modify the flow rate of the reagents and the length of the reaction chamber.
This advantage of the process of the present invention is particularly interesting, from an industrial point of view, where the same pyrolysis furnace can be suitable for a production which may vary, for example from 10 to 6.5 tonnes / day. acetylene, without any structural modification. In the case of pyrolysis of hydrocarbons into acetylene
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and ethylene, this variation in the production rate does not cause any change in the acetylene / ethylene ratio in the gases produced.
The nature of the present invention will become clearer from the description of the pyrolysis furnaces shown in Figures I to III.
FIG. I represents, in section, a circular furnace for the thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons by partial combustion.
Figure II is a cross section of this furnace.
FIG. III represents, in section, a circular pyrolysis furnace by injection of the hydrocarbon to be decomposed into hot gases.
The furnace represented in FIG. I comprises a distributor 1, in the form of a cylindrical disc made of refractory steel, crossed by the parallel channels 2 for distributing the reaction gas mixture in the partial combustion chamber 3, delimited by the side wall 4. Along of its outer contour, the dispenser comprises a hollow ring 5, in which an opening E in the form of a slot is arranged.
At the end of the combustion chamber 3, the wall 4 is surrounded and extended by a sleeve 7, of diameter slightly greater than that of the combustion chamber. To this sleeve 7 is fixed an annular plate 8, integral with a torus 9 connected by a certain number of conduits 10 to an axial conduit 11 for supplying coolant fluid. On the torus 9 are regularly distributed the sprayers 12. The diameter of the torus 9 is greater than that of the sleeve 7 The injection slots of the sprayers are slightly inclined, at an angle of approximately 2, with respect to the toroid. zontal.
The central pipe 11 can be moved along the axis of the pyrolysis furnace and it carries with it, in its movement, the pipes 10 and the assembly formed by the sleeve 7 the plate
8, torus 9 and sprayers 12.
Through the channels 2 of the distributor 1, the preheated mixture of hydrocarbons and oxygen is introduced into the reaction zone 3a where it ignites.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Through the ring 5 and the slot 6, water is injected along the wall 4, so as to form a protective water screen. On the other hand, water is sprayed through the ejectors 12 in the form of thin blades, having an opening angle of 60 thanks to a judicious choice of the number of sprayers, depending in particular on the diameter of the pyrolysis zone and of the diameter of the torus 9, the layers of water overlap and form a full and homogeneous layer, the section of which is at least equal to that of the pyrolysis zone.
On this layer of water, spreads that of the protective screen of the wall 4, thus forming a hydraulic seal and preventing the pyrolysis gases from escaping through the narrow annular gap between the outer surface of the wall 4 and sleeve 7
Instead of water, an oil can be used to quench the gases after partial combustion and to form the protective screen along the inner surface of the wall of the reaction chamber.
This oil is, for example, a petroleum distillation fraction and having the following characteristics: dropping point of 175 c and 50% distilling at 300 c. Using such an oil, the respective contents of diacetylene and vinylacetylene in the pyro-gas lysis are respectively 0.07 and 0.17% by volume, tended that these contents are 0.10 and 0.20% with the use of water.
The oil which was used to form the protective screen and to quench the reaction gases is recovered and reused, either for the same purpose (after removal of the dissolved and entrained impurities, or as fuel.
According to Figure III, the device marl is applied to a pyrolysis furnace by introducing the hydrocarbon into hot combustion gases. This furnace essentially comprises a combustion chamber 13, with the pipes (shown schematically)
14 and 15 for supplying fuel gas and oxygen (or other oxidizer communicating directly with the reaction or pyrolysis chamber 16
Through the pipes 19, water vapor is injected. At the intersection of these two chambers 23 and 16, there is a ring 17 provided with injectors. The wall 4 of the reaction chamber 16 is protected. thermally by an external circulation of cold water, brought by
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
driving 18.
The lower end of the reaction chamber 16 is provided with the movable device for quenching the hot gases, identical to that shown in FIG. I.
The water flowing along the outer surface of the wall 4 passes between this wall and the sleeve 7 and forms a hydraulic seal.
During normal operation, the fuel gas rich in hydrogen and oxygen are introduced, through lines 14 and 15, into chamber 13, where they are subjected to combustion. In the hot gases resulting from this combustion and passing through the reaction chamber 16, the hydrocarbon to be pyrolyzed is injected, using sprayers 17. The hydrocarbon mixes with the hot gases and undergoes thermal decomposition in the chamber 16. The pyrolysis gases are then cooled by the quenching water screen formed by the jets coming from the sprayers 12, distributed around the torus 9.
It should also be noted that the water, injected along the external surface of the wall 4, then covers the internal surface of the lower end of the sleeve 7, protecting the latter center from carbon deposits and other tarry materials. .
A variant consists in making a protective water screen along the internal surface of the wall 4 of the chamber 16, replacing or in addition to the external water circulation.
Example 1- Partial combustion of methane to acetylene
The partial combustion furnace shown in Figure I comprises a reaction chamber 3 with an internal diameter of 430 mm. and an external diameter of 444 mm. The wall 4 has a length of 250 mm. and it is surrounded by the sleeve 7 with an internal diameter of 448 mm. and a length of 200 mm. On the torus 9, with a diameter of 648 mm., There are regularly distributed 48 sprayers 12. The torus 9 is connected to the central pipe 11 of 80 mm. in diameter by 3 pipes 10 of 25 mm in diameter.
The concentricity of the sleeve 7 and of the chamber 3 is maintained by 3 guides made up of 2 mm metallized wires. of diameter welded to the lower part of the external surface of the wall 4.

Using a suitable device (not shown), it is possible to move the pipe 11 axially so as to adjust the position of the entire device for quenching the partial combustion gases.
Thus, the length of the reaction chamber can vary from
250 mm. to 350 mm.
In this oven, 2150 Nm3 / hour of methane were introduced at
97% purity, preheated to 650 C., and 1200 cm3 / H, oxygen, at
97% purity, also preheated to 650 c Through slot 6, 2 m3 / hour of water was injected, forming a protective screen along the internal surface of wall 4, while by sprayers 12, it was injected 18 m3 / hour of water forming the flue gas quenching surface.
When the lathe was put into operation, the length of the reaction chamber was 300 mm. Line 11 was then moved gradually, upwards and then downwards, continuously monitoring, by analysis of the reaction gases, the influence of the length of the reaction chamber on the acetylene content of these gases. . It was found that a length of 305 mm. gave a maximum yield of 7.8% acetylene (calculated on the dry pyrolysis gas).
The following table also indicates the variations in the acetylene content of the pyrolysis gas as a function of the length of the combustion chamber.

It follows from the table above that the length of the reaction chamber must be adjusted with precision in order to obtain and maintain the maximum acetylene content in the pyrolysis gas.
Example 2 - Pyrolysis of Liquid Hydrocarbons into Acetylene and Ethylene The pyrolysis furnace shown in FIG. III comprises a combustion chamber 13 with a diameter of 140 mm. and a height of 168 mm., provided with pipes 14 and 15 for supplying oxygen and hydrogen-rich fuel and with steam injection pipes 19, This combustion chamber is of the model described in our patent application Belgian No. 37.981 The reaction chamber 16 has an internal diameter of 150 mm. and an outer diameter of 166 mm.
The side wall 4 has a length of 600 mm.
The pyrolysis gas quenching device comprises a sleeve 7 of a 170 mm dismeter, integral with the plate 8 and the torus 9, with a diameter of 370 mm., Comprising 24 sprayers 12.
The torus 9 is connected by 3 pipes 10 to the central, mobile pipe 11, with a diameter of 80 mm. The refractory brick wall 4 is from the pyrolysis chamber 16 / externally cooled by circulation of cold water.
In this pyrolysis furnace, 250 Nm3 / hour of oxygen, at 93.5% purity, were introduced into the combustion chamber via line 14. Through line 15, 260 Nm3 / hour of gas was introduced. Coke ovens, the average composition of which was:

The position of the pyrolysis gas quenching device was adjusted such that the pyrolysis chamber 16 had a length of 880 mm.
Under these conditions, the production of acetylene was
1922 kg./day of acetylene and 4282 kg./day of ethylene and the conversion rate of naphtha to acetylene-ethylene was 52%.
In this same oven, tests were carried out reducing the flow rates of reagents to 2/3 of the values given above and it was noted that. all other conditions remaining equal, the ethylene / acetylene ratio was changed and the conversion rate of naphtha had significantly decreased (50% instead of 52%).
However, by adapting the length of the pyrolysis chamber 16 to the new flow rates, that is to say by reducing this length by
880 mm. at 590 mm., not only was the ethylene / acetylene ratio restored to about 2, but in addition the rate of transformation of the naphtha had risen to 51.5%.
