<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The main patent N 503.618 of May 30, 1951 relates to a continuous ironing machine, comprising a hollow ironing cylinder of steel or iron, heated internally and whose outer surface is polished and is not provided with any of the coatings generally used in most ironing machines.
Said ironing cylinder rests in a metal bowl which is also heated.
The ironing cylinder of this machine is supported in a known manner by bearings which allow it to move in the vertical direction as a function of the thickness of the material to be ironed.
In addition, this machine comprises un.means for conveying and driving the material to be ironed, consisting of an endless conveyor belt, the width of which is substantially equal to that of the table of the machine and to the length of the ironing cylinder, said endless conveyor belt passes between the ironing cylinder and the corresponding cup, it is moved and driven by rollers arranged at both ends of the table, it is furthermore provided along its two longitudinal edges with a hem in which is engaged a metal bar of a suitable profile which is curved around said rollers which are provided near their ends with an annular groove maintenan-t and guiding said bars.
This conveyor belt is intended to carry the material to be ironed from the beginning of the table where said material can be spread so as to occupy the entire width of the belt, to bring it automatically under the ironing roller and to deposit it behind. this one on the pickup table.
This machine has the great advantage of running continuously and being able to be served by only two people, the first spreading the material to be ironed on the belt at the start of the table, the second picking up said material at the other end of the table. the table-, after passing under the ironing cylinder.
However, the use of this machine has revealed certain drawbacks, in particular the fact that during its passage under the ironing cylinder, the material to be ironed is only perfectly ironed on the upper face which has come into contact with the ironing cylinder. , the other face (lower) not having been in direct contact with the feeding trough, since the conveyor belt is interposed between this face and said trough; It was therefore necessary to achieve perfect ironing, to pass the material twice through the machine the first time ironing "right side up", the second time "inside out", which would considerably increase handling. and consequently the operating costs of the machine.
Another disadvantage is that the conveyor belt which is made of a textile material such as cotton, linen, silk, rayon, nylin, or the like, tends to shrink or relax during ironing, under the iron. combined action of the heat given off by the ironing means and of the humidity which is given off by the material to be ironed, or which comes, where appropriate, from the steam distributed in the material to be ironed by the ironing means. Such a narrowing of the conveyor belt causes tensions which modify its width and which, as a result, exert undesirable forces on the guide bars inserted in the hems of said belt, to the point of hindering its linear travel and even of preventing it. get stuck.
The object of the present invention is to overcome these drawbacks.
A first improvement consists in equipping this machine with the devices necessary to allow ironing of the two faces (upper and lower) of the material in a single pass through the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This object is achieved by providing on the machine an internally heated metal shell, the upper face of which has a parabolic profile (donkey back) and the length of which is equal to that of the ironing cylinder; the material to be ironed conveyed by the conveyor belt, is pushed by means which will be described later, on said shell and driven on the latter by an auxiliary endless belt, therefore, the underside of the material is ironed in contact with the shell; When it arrives at the other end of the shell, the material is projected by an unloading device onto the first conveyor belt and driven by the latter under the ironing cylinder which treats its upper face.
Both sides of the material are therefore ironed in a single pass through the machine.
The second drawback residing in the narrowing or relaxation of the conveyor belt is eliminated by providing the rollers which drive it with elastic end heads capable of compensating for the variations which may occur in its width.
These elastic heads therefore ensure the perfect tension and the straight path of the conveyor belt.
The improvements which are the subject of this patent are shown
EMI2.1
as an example mi a 1 with drawings -aiinexes, -. dâns -1asquels fig.l shows schematically the execution of the ironing machine covered by the main patent. FIG. 2 is a schematic view of this machine provided with the improvements according to the present patent. fig. 3 is a view of the end head of the rollers moving and guiding the conveyor belt according to the main patent. Fig.4 is a sectional view of the new end head of said rollers according to the present improvement.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the shell ensuring the ironing of the underside of the material treated by the machine.
The ironing machine which is the subject of the main patent is schematized in fig.l.
The table 1 carries a heated metal bowl 2 in which the ironing cylinder 3, also heated, rests and which is supported by bearings, not shown. Each of the ends of the table carries a roller 4-5 on which the endless conveyor belt 8 rolls; under the table are arranged the tension rollers 6 and 7, one of which is a motor and on which is wound the lower strand of the belt 8. The upper strand of the belt is supported above the table 1 by the rollers 4 and 5 and between these the said upper strand is engaged between the cylinder 3 and the cup 2.
The material to be ironed is deposited on the front part of the upper strand of the belt 8, is conveyed by the latter and is driven under the cylinder 3 which performs the ironing. After passing under the cylinder 3, the ironed material, still carried by the belt 8, is brought within easy reach of the person responsible for its collection. This machine therefore performs the "continuous" ironing of the material deposited on the front part of the conveyor belt; however, the ironing is only perfect on the upper face of the material that has come into contact with the ironing cylinder 3, the other side not having been in direct contact with the ironing pan, the conveyor belt being interposed. between this face and the cup 2.
If the two sides of the material must be perfectly ironed, it is therefore necessary to make it make a second pass through the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
FIG. 2 schematically illustrates the ironing machine to which means have been added to ensure the ironing in a single pass of the two faces of the material to be ironed.
This machine comprises a frame 9 supporting the constituent elements of the machine, in particular the table 10, of reduced dimensions, the heated metal bowl 12 in which the transfer cylinder 13 also heated rests in a known manner. The rollers 14 and 15 on which rolls the endless conveyor belt 18 which, under the table 10 and inside the frame 9 is driven on the rollers 16, 17,19 and 20 among which the tension roller is marked 16 and the drive roller which is actuated by motor pulley 21, chain 22 and idler 23.
Between the front part of the machine (the one where the material to be ironed is deposited) and the ironing cylinder 13 is placed a metal shell 24, the upper face of which affects a parabolic profile (see fig. 5), the length of this shell corresponds to that of the ironing cylinder 13.
Just like the ironing cylinder 13 and the cup 12, the shell 24 is heated internally, for example by means of electric resistances; the upper face of the shell is perforated with small holes intended to let through, if necessary, the water vapor necessary for the wet ironing of the material.
In the extension of the table 10 and immediately in front of the shell 24, the conveyor belt 8 is deflected by a roller 25 parallel to the shell 24 and which is arranged so as to conceal said conveyor belt under the latter, this roller 25 is actuated at from the roller 14 to the intervention, for example, of a V-belt 26.
Above the shell is disposed an auxiliary endless belt 27 carried by the rollers 28 and 29 so that its lower strand 27 'is in contact with the parabolic surface of the shell 24, as shown in fig. 2. .
The roller 29 is actuated from a toothed pinion mounted on the roller 17 by means of a chain transmission 30, tensioned by means of the tensioner pinion 30 '. In the path of the endless belt 27 and near the roller 29 on which the latter rolls, there is provided an unloading device intended to detach the material to be ironed from the lower strand 27 'of the auxiliary belt 27 and to project it onto the upper strand of the belt conveyor 18 passing under the location of said unloading device, before being engaged between the ironing cylinder 13 and the cup 12.
This unloading device consists of a square bar 31, carried in bearings not shown and which is rotated in the direction opposite to the direction of advance of the auxiliary belt 27 by means of a trapezoidal belt driven by a pulley. groove carried by the roller 29 of said belt 27.
Finally, the rotation of the ironing cylinder 13 is obtained by a chain and trapezoidal belt transmission from the roller 17 via the pulley pinion 32.
Fig. 3 of the drawings shows the execution of the ends of the roller 4 operating the conveyor belt 8 in the construction which was the subject of the main patent. In this embodiment, the endless belt 8 is made of a suitable textile material and is provided along its edges with a hem a few centimeters wide in which is engaged a flat metal bar 9 curved around the roller. 4.
Near each of the ends of this roller is formed a circular groove 10 intended to hold in place the bar 9 and the hem in which it is engaged.
The purpose of these bars 9 was to guide the endless belt 8, to prevent it from slipping under the ironing cylinder 3 and to maintain its straight track.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
This arrangement has given rise to the drawbacks detailed above and to remedy them, the present invention includes a second improvement.
This consists in providing the two ends of the roller 14 (see fig2 and 4) with an elastic metal head which is illustrated in fig.4.
This metal head consists of a cover body 36 made, for example, of copper and whose nominal outer diameter is the same as that of the roller 14, its largest inner diameter is established so that it can slide smoothly. on the reduced diameter end 33 of the roller 14. This cover 36 is provided with a step 40 sufficient to receive and hold the flat metal bar 35 engaged in the hem 34 of the conveyor belt 18.
The cover 36 is held and guided by means of a sleeve
38 on a metal shaft 37 secured to the 'water deckhouse 14.
A helical spring 39 disposed around the axis 37 and interposed between the end face of the roller 14 and the internal face of the fur 38 tends to push back said cover and therefore to tension the conveyor belt.
18 since said cover 36 is supported by its step 40 against the metal bar 35 engaged in the hem 34 of the carpet 18. In the event that, following some reason, the carpet narrows in the direction of its width, The width, the metal bars 35 engaged in the hems 34 would act on the covers 36 and compress the springs 39 housed between the latter and the roller 14.
The elasticity of the said springs will maintain the permanent tension of the carpet
18 and will compensate for variations that may occur in its width.
The perfect tension and the rectilinear track of the belt 18 are therefore guaranteed by the elastic heads lining the ends of the roller 18.
Let us now examine the operation of the ironing machine, provided with the improvements according to the present invention.
The material to be ironed is deposited on the front part of the conveyor belt 18 (see fig. 2) part located immediately above the table 1. The upper strand of the belt 18 carries the material towards the shell 24, but is conceals under the latter at the height of the roller
25.
However, the ironing material pushed both by the belt 18 and by the rotation of the roller 25 is advanced over the parabolic surface of the shell 24 and is gripped there by the auxiliary conveyor belt.
27 which presses it against said face of the shell while making it advance to the left, that is to say in the direction of the ironing cylinder 13.
During its passage over the shell 24, the underside of the material to be ironed is subjected to the heat radiated by the latter, is pressed by the auxiliary belt 27, and is consequently ironed.
Arrived near the end of the shell 24, the material to be fed naturally slides along the curvature of said shell and falls on the conveyor belt 18, the upper strand of which continues its course in the direction of the ironing cylinder 13 If, for some reason, the material to be ironed remained adhering either to the auxiliary belt 27 or to the shell 24, the unloading device, consisting of a rotating square bar 31, would take care of detaching it and projecting it onto the belt 18. .
The latter conveys the material to be ironed and drives it between the ironing cylinder 13 and the bowl 12 where the ironing of its upper face takes place. After passing under the cylinder 13, the material still conveyed by the conveyor belt 18 is brought within reach of the person responsible for collecting it.
Continuous ironing of the underside and top, in a single pass through the machine, provides significant advantages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
economic and practically doubles the production of the machine without requiring the use of additional labor,
CLAIMS.
1.- Continuous ironing machine, in accordance with main patent N 503,618, comprising a heated metal ironing cylinder resting in a metal bowl also heated and provided with an endless conveyor belt, conveying the material to be ironed and the iron. 'driving between said cylinder and the corresponding cup, characterized in that it is equipped with a metal shell with a parabolic profile heated internally disposed between the front part of the table of the machine and the ironing cylinder and means forcing the ironing material to pass over the heated face of said shell, the face on which it is guided and pressed by an auxiliary conveyor belt.
