The present invention relates to the oxidation of organic compounds, more particularly to oxidation in the presence of bromine or of a substance containing bromine.
It is known to oxidize organic compounds by means of oxygen or a gas containing it, carrying out in a stable organic solvent, usually a carboxylic acid.
We also know that in. Many oxidation processes, oxidation catalysts, are essential, even to obtain small yields, and that certain metals or metal compounds can be used as catalysts. The most useful catalysts are substances containing variable-valent metals / such. '..than cobalt., chromium, manganese, lead, iron, copper, nickel and vanadium. It is also known to reduce them.

reaction time and increase yields by operating under high temperatures and pressures.
It is also known to oxidize organic compounds in an organic liquid medium, stable under the oxidation conditions used, by means of oxygen or a gas containing it, in the presence of an oxidation catalyst and bromine or a substance containing bromine.
It has now been found that the addition of small amounts of chloride ions to the liquid organic medium substantially increases the rate of oxidation.
The present invention provides a process for the oxidation of alkyl-substituted aromatic compounds and their partially oxidized compounds arriving therein, in liquid phase, and if desired, in an organic liquid medium, stable under the oxidation conditions employed. , by means of molecular oxygen, in the presence of an oxidation catalyst and bromine or of a substance containing bromine., also in the presence of an amount of chloride ions: not exceeding 5% by weight relative to the weight of the liquid organic medium used.
Although 1-11-chloride can be introduced in amounts up to 5% by weight, amounts of less than 2% are often sufficient to cause a substantial increase in the rate of the oxidation reaction.
The improvement can be obtained by carrying out the oxidation under atmospheric pressure or under an elevated pressure and an elevated temperature.
The organic liquid medium used is preferably one capable of dissolving, at least to some extent, the bromine or the bromine-containing compound. It is also preferable that the liquid medium dissolves the aromatic compound to be oxidized, at least to some extent, under the conditions of the oxidation. It has been established that carboxylic acids are suitable as liquid media, and among these, the use of acetic, propionic or benzoic acids is preferred because of their availability.

easy tion.
The catalysts can be used in the form of metals, oxides or metal salts and they are preferably in a form selected so that the metal ion is available. As the source of the metal ion and of the bromide ion, it is possible to use a metal bromide such as manganese bromide and / or cobalt bromide, or one or more salts of one or more metals capable of forming one or more catalytic metal ions, such as a metal carboxylate, for example manganese acetate and / or cobalt acetate, together with bromine
1 itself or a substance capable of forming a bromide ion under the reaction conditions.
For this purpose, hydrobromic acid, a metal bromide such as sodium bromide or ammonium bromide, or an organic bromide such as alkyl or aryl-alkyl bromide can be used. or any other readily soluble, bromine-containing substance, such as tetrabromomethane.
It is believed that bromine acts in its ionic form during the process and that the reaction does not actually require a small amount of bromine. For this reason, it is preferred to use bromine-containing substances which dissolve, at least to some extent, in the liquid medium.
The chloride ion can be introduced in any suitable form, for example in the form of hydrochloric acid, a metal chloride such as sodium or cobalt chloride, or an organic chloride.
When the oxidation product is the same as the liquid medium used for the reaction, the process lends itself particularly well to continuous operation.
The oxidation reaction can be carried out in any suitable reactor having a corrosion resistant inner surface, for example of glass, ceramic or a corrosion resistant metal or alloy. It has been found that containers made or having interior surfaces

or which are coated with titanium, tantalum, hafnium, zinc, silver from Hastelloy D and Ha.stelloy C are particularly suitable, as described in Belgian Patent No. 562,102 and in the patent applications. English patents n 14,039 / 57 and 26,815 / 57.
The following examples, in which parts and proportions are expressed by weight, illustrate the present invention without limiting it.
EXAMPLE 1. -
Para-xylene (1 part) of lucid propionic (5 parts) and hydrochloric acid (0.005 part) are heated together in the presence of cobalt bromide (0.01 part) at the reflux temperature of the mixture. Oxygen is passed through it at a rate of 2 liters per hour. After 10 hours, the reaction is stopped and the yield of terephthalic acid is 75%.
For comparison, when the example is reproduced without the addition of chloride ions, the yield is only 52% EXAMPLES 2-5. -
Boiling solutions (137 C) of para-xylene (40 g) in propionic acid (200 g) containing cobalt, manganese, bromine and chlorine in the manner and in the amounts indicated in the table below are exposed for 5 hours 10 minutes at atmospheric pressure to a stream of oxygen (12 liters / hour) passed through a. hollow cruciform stirrer (dimensions: 11/2 inch x 1-7 / 16 inch or 38.1mm x 36.5mm)) rotating at 1600 revolutions / minute. During the oxidation periods, the water is removed as it forms by a Dean and Stark decanter placed at the head of a distillation column on the gas outlet pipe.
On completion of the oxidation periods, the insoluble terephthaliou acid is separated by filtration in each case from the oxidation medium, it is washed twice with water (50 cm3) and then three times with acetone (50 cm 3). cm3), it is dried and its weight determined.
