<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

billes ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a steering tube for receiving the steering column or the handlebars in motorcycles and has for object an economical mass production of steering tubes of this kind. These head tubes were heretofore made from solid material, that is, from a rough forged part of tempered steel, with subsequent machining by chip removal (drilling and turning). This manufacturing process is very long and also gives a great waste of materials.
The method according to the invention eliminates these drawbacks. It consists in that the steering tube is made by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cold stamping of a metal blank, in particular steel. It is important for this process that the metal blank is first of all formed by back-discharge pressing into a cup and that the latter is then formed by direct stamping into an elongated cylindrical hollow body, that is to say. that is, in the desired final form. By back-discharge pressing is meant here the discharge of the material inside a tool consisting of a punch and a stamping sleeve in the opposite direction to the movement of this punch.
In direct stamping, the material is, on the other hand, forced back in the direction of the punch through a stamping gap formed between this punch and the bore of the sleeve and the cup formed beforehand by backpressure pressing is stretched to the final shape with great precision of dimensions and shape.
Other characteristics moreover emerge from the detailed description which follows and from the appended drawing showing, by way of non-limiting example, an embodiment of a device for carrying out the method according to the invention.
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of the steering tube with the steering column engaged in this tube; Figure 2 is an elevation of the metal blank affecting the shape of an initially upset bar section; Figure 3 shows a pressing tool for manufacturing a bucket; Figure 4 shows another pressing tool for the manufacture of an elongated hollow cylinder having a. bottom and an upper marginal bead; Fig. 5 shows a subsequent use tool for shaping the upper marginal bead formed on the hollow cylinder into an inner seat of a rolling bearing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
balls;
FIG. 6 is a longitudinal section of the finished head tube, showing the appearance of the fibers.
In figure 1, 1 wants the steering tube with the steering column 2 supported so as to be able to rotate in the two ball bearings 3, 4.
For the manufacture of the steering tube 1, one starts with a steel blank, for example having the shape of a bar section 5. This blank advantageously receives a centering edge 5 ′ formed by TITI, slight upsetting. In order to create during the subsequent stamping favorable friction conditions between the part and the pressing tool, the metal blank 5 receives by surface treatment a thin coating, preferably a phosphate layer, which serves as a support for a suitable lubricant and which forms a separating layer between the tool and the workpiece.
The blank 5 thus treated is placed in the pressing tool 'shown in FIG. 3. The latter consists of the punch 6 and the stamping sleeve 7, the bottom of which is formed by an inserted body 8 serving as an ejector. .
The punch 6 is guided in the sleeve 7 and is neckline, at the lower end so that there is provided between this end and the inner wall of the bore of the sleeve 7 an annular gap 7 '. descent of. punch 6, the latter attacks with its necked end the middle of the blank 5 engaged. The material discharged in this case rises in the annular gap 7 'of the pressing tool, which forms the cup 9. This is then shaped in another pressing tool shown in FIG. 4 at vn. elongated cylindrical hollow body 10 comprising a bottom.
The material of the bucket 9 is forced here using the neck pressing punch 11, the annular shoulder 11 'of which exerts a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
pressure against the upper edge of the cup, through an annular gap formed between the lower neck part of the punch 11 and the annmular shoulder 12 of the stepped recessed sleeve 13, the shell of the cup 9 being stretched to the desired length of the tube direction 1. The previously specified annular gap determines the wall thickness of the cylindrical hollow body 10. Since the material of the bucket. 2 is driven back during this pressing operation in the direction of movement of the punch 11, this operation is called "direct stamping".
As shown in Figure 4, an outer bead
14 is formed at the upper edge of the hollow body 10. This outer bead is pushed inwards with the aid of the pressing tool shown in FIG. 5 and is shaped as a ball bearing seat 15 (FIG. 1). A similar seat
16 of the ball bearing is formed at the lower end of the hollow body 10, since part of its bottom is stamped out using a punch pin.
Figure 6 shows the appearance of the fibers in the cold-drawn head tube. Since the fibers are only deflected during cold shaping and are not cut, the notching action is considerably reduced and therefore extremely favorable strength properties are obtained. The large deformation occurring during cold stamping increases the stretch limit, the tensile strength, as well as the resistance to oscillation of the finished part.
As a further advantage of cold-stamped nieces, it is also finally worth mentioning their particularly smooth surface.

Various modifications can moreover be made to the embodiment, shown and described in detail, without departing from the scope of the invention.
