<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
REVENDICATIONS.

Method of manufacturing oreuse valves.
The present invention relates to the method of manufacturing hollow valves which consists of starting from a cylindrical cup or "flower pot" whose bottom and side wall have substantially the same thickness.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and to shape it, by appropriate operations, such as stamping and swaging operations, so as to produce the head, the neck and the stem of the valve. In particular, obtaining this bucket by stamping a sheet metal disc has been described in Belgian Patent No. 434,358 filed by MM. Gardelle and Lemoine on May 13, 1939.
A first feature of the invention consists in reinforcing by an accumulation of metal the peripheral part of the valve head, in its largest diameter.
For this purpose, and according to a first embodiment, one starts with a cylindrical cup having a diameter not equal but less than the final diameter of the valve head and, before shrinking its side wall, it is subjected to a delivery operation in the direction ,, axial (electrical, mechanical, hydraulic or other) so as to expand laterally its bottom substantially to the diameter of the valve head completed.
This cylindrical cup with open bottom is then shaped by known means, such as stamping, swaging, to obtain the valve head, of desired profile, the neck and the stem. In particular, the profile of the head may include, at the place dela scope, a groove intended to receive an added lining.
It should be noted that the metal thus accumulated on the peripheral part of the valve head is taken, during the delivery, on the side wall of the bucket and not on its bottom, of which the internal and external profile , the thickness and the fiberization remain unchanged.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to an alternative embodiment, the reinforcement surround the peripheral part of the valve head is obtained starting from a valve head having a substantially uniform thickness but whose diameter is greater than that of the valve head desired. obtain and whose periphery is subjected to radial hammering.
Another feature of the invention, - which may or may not be combined with the first, aims to achieve the cavity of the valve stem to the desired dimension and to produce the total or partial closure of the end part of said stem. , without removing metal with the tool on the outside wall of the rod. The continuity of the fibers is thus safeguarded in the external zone of the valve stem,
For this purpose, one of the last passes of necking, hammering or other is carried out on only a portion of the length of the rod, from the neck, so that the end or terminal part of the rod remains a sufficient thickness of metal to make it possible to ensure its final closure by a final operation of necking, hammering or the like.
Ia description which follows, with reference to the accompanying drawings, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be carried out,
Figs. 1 and 2 show two phases of a first embodiment of a valve with a reinforced head, the cup or flowerpot being shown in longitudinal section,
The f ig. 3 shows the completed valve head.
Fig. 4 shows an alternative embodiment of a valve with a reinforced head.
Figs. 5 to 9 schematically represent the last phases of the shaping of the valve stem according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
To achieve a valve with a reinforced head., According to the invention, is established by any method, for example by stamping a sheet metal blank, a bucket whose bottom 1 (Fig. 1) and the wall la- teral 2 have substantially the same uniform thickness ,, the outer diameter d of this cup being less than the outer diameter D that the finished valve head must have, shown in phantom.
A mandrel 4 is then introduced into the cavity 3 of the cup 2 (FIG. 2); one then proceeds to the heating of the part of the wall adjoining the bottom and the repression of the said wall is produced anywhere suitable means (machine for upsetting, hammering, press, etc.). This gives a metal accumulation or expansion 5 shown in fig. 2 and at the same time a shortening of the side wall 2.
The foregoing operations can be carried out in a machine producing at the same time the heating as well as the discharge in the direction of the arrows 7, of the kind used for the manufacture of full valves. Of course, the mandrel 4 can be replaced by a piston or other similar member forcing the metal to expand to the outside without modifying the internal profile of the cup.
At the end of the operation, the head 1 of the blank has a diameter sufficient to enable the exact diameter D of the valve head to be obtained subsequently, by an appropriate shaping operation.
The mandrel 4 is then withdrawn and the usual necking or other operations are then carried out to obtain the neck and the valve stem, seen in section in FIG. 3 the valve head is finished; in this figure, there is shown in dotted lines the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
groove 6 which could possibly be provided at the location of the bearing to receive a special alloy lining.
In the variant shown in fig. 4, the reinforcement of the peripheral part of the valve head is obtained, starting from a head of larger diameter having a substantially uniform thickness as shown in phantom, by radial hammering (arrow 7a) of said part until the desired profile is obtained.
To shape the valve stem without having to remove the tool from the metal on its outer wall, it is possible; in accordance with the invention, proceed as follows: t one begins by reducing the diameter of the body of the bucket shown in fig. 2 by one or more necking passes or similar operation; this gives a rod blank 2a shown frozen 5 on which is threaded a sleeve or ring 8, preferably metal which .s'extends over a certain length of the blank.
Then the sleeved part is brought back to the diameter of the non-sleeved part (fixed 6) either by necking or by any other means. The sleeve (fig. 7) is removed by machining and a blank 2b is then obtained having the profile shown in said figure 7.
The cavity 3b of the blank is stripped without touching the inner wall of the end part 9 thereof (the outline of the bore being shown at 10 in FIG. 7); a blank 2c is then obtained having the profile shown in FIG. 8.
Finally, the partial or total closure of the end part 9 is effected by reducing said part to the diameter of the remainder of the stem, either by restriction or by any other means (frozen 9) and thus a fully hollow valve stem 2d is obtained. or
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
partially closed, that is to say having a central channel without the outer wall of said rod having been machined.
According to a variant, the above operations can be carried out without using a sleeve but on the condition of using a shrinking machine with open dies.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the embodiments which have just been described without departing from the scope of the invention; in particular, this extends to the manufacture of hollow valves in which the head and the stem are assembled together or are in one piece.
