<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The present invention relates to a coupling device intended in particular to be used as a clutch mechanism for two shafts arranged in the extension of one another.
This mechanism is of the type in which the clutch is provided by means of members, sensitive to centrifugal force, the driving or immobilization of which is controlled by an electromagnet controlling an auxiliary clutch.
As is well known, it is necessary for the clutch to be progressive and free from chattering that the friction linings, in particular, are never soiled or placed in the presence of fatty substances,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It follows from this fact that the lubrication of the moving parts, and in particular of the joints of the members sensitive to the force oentri 'e, is practically impossible to carry out in a suitable manner.
The present invention completely overcomes this drawback by providing a novel electromagnetically controlled centrifugal drive friction coupling device.
According to the invention, the device comprises friction members carried respectively by the driving shaft and by the driven shaft, these friction members being caused to cooperate with each other to produce the clutch under the effect of the centrifugal force to which weights are subjected, the support of which can be connected or isolated from the members driven by the driving shaft by means of a fixed electromagnet, acting on an auxiliary clutch controlling the movement of the support members of said weights , which are arranged, as well as the elements intended to transform the pivoting movement in which they are driven into axial translational movement, in a sealed compartment, isolated from the friction members and. less partially filled with lubricant.
According to another characteristic of the invention, leaweights are articulated on axes carried by a plate. annular integral with a sleeve which also supports, on the grooves that it presents, a support disc for rollers intended to operate with the masaelottes when the latter pivot, the translational movement of this disc being transmitted to the friction members by the intermediary of fingers passing through an annular partition which has an axial bore in which one of the ends of said sleeve is engaged, the other end of which is guided and supported in the axial bore of a bell integral with said partition and containing the weights and the organs that it controls.
Various other characteristics of the invention moreover emerge from the detailed description which follows.
One embodiment of the object of the invention is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
shown, by way of non-limiting example, in the accompanying drawing
The fi.g 1 is a sectional elevation illustrating an embodiment of the coupling mechanism according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a partial sectional elevation on a larger scale of an alternative embodiment of the mechanism shown in FIG. 1.
In the exemplary embodiment shown, the coupling mechanism comprises a flywheel 1, suitably connected to a drive shaft, not shown, which may for example be the end of the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine. The flywheel 1 is rigidly connected to a housing 2, which has an annular flange 3 extending substantially parallel to the flywheel 1, so as to define with the latter a housing 4.
The housing 2, which is cylindrical in shape, internally has slides or grooves 5, serving to guide and drive the pressure plates 6, 7 intended to cooperate to produce the clutch with the friction linings of the discs. clutch 8, 9.
EMI3.1
The clutch discs 8 9 are connected, elastically or not, to splined sleeves 10 which are threaded onto the also splined end 11 of a shaft 12 to be driven 12.
The annular flange 3, formed by the housing 2, has at its central part a cylindrical bearing surface 13 in which is engaged an anti-friction ring 14 which is threaded onto the lower end 15 of a sleeve 16 concentric with. the driven shaft 12 and mounted by ra.pport to the latter, so that it can in some cases take a relative rotational movement with respect to it.
17 designates a seal which is interposed between the sleeve 16 and the annular flange 3.
The sleeve 16 has, behind its end 15, the anti-friction ring 14, grooves 18 for guiding and driving a sheath 19 having an annular rim 20 from the periphery.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of which are @ rmées yokes 21 extending substantially radially.
Each of the yokes 21 supports an axis 22 for retaining a roller 23.
The flange 20, which is integral in rotation with the sleeve 16, but which can be moved axially, is connected, by means of a thrust bearing 24, to an annular ring 25 having, at the periphery of a flange 26 which it forms, grooves 27 which are engaged inside a 'splined end piece 28 formed by the flange 3 of the housing 2.
The annular ring 25 has, near its periphery, a series of equally spaced holes 30 between which are formed the surfaces 31. The holes 30 serve for the positioning of cups 32, which themselves serve as housings for springs 33, working in compression. the free end of which bears in the bottom of blind holes 33a of the flange 3. The bearing surfaces 31 are in contact with one of the ends of fingers 34 passed through bores 35 of the flange 3, so that the free end of the fingers 34 can attack the pressure ring 7.
36 designates interposed seals -between the wall of the bore 35 and the fingers 34, in order to isolate! completely the housing 4 delimited by the housing 2 of a compartment 37 formed by this housing and a bell 38 to which it is integral.
The rollers 23 described above are intended to cooperate with weights 39 which are mounted idly by means of bearings 40 on pins 41. The latter are supported by the branches of yokes 42 which form, at its periphery, a plate 43 which is made integral, for example by means of a key 45, of the sleeve 16.
The weight carrier plate 43 is also connected to the bottom 38a of the bell 38 by means of a thrust bearing 46, similar to the thrust bearing 24. So that the compartment 37, in which the weights 39 are arranged, the rollers 23
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
and the annular crown 25, is completely sealed, a seal 47 is interposed between the wall of the central bore 38b presented by the bell 38 and the periphery of a fur 48 integral with the sleeve 16.
The fur 48 has, over part of its length, grooves 49 on which is threaded a support sleeve 50 of a clutch disc 51, the friction lining of which is intended to cooperate with a lens 52 formed by the bottom 38a of the bell and with a plate 53 which can slide on the grooves 49 formed by the sleeve at its periphery.
48 clutch disc support 51.
55 designates springs working in compression which are interposed between the plate 53 and a stop piece 56 so as to always tend to move the plate 53 in the direction in which it clamps the friction linings of the clutch disc 51 against the bottom of the bell 38.
The plate 53 constitutes, moreover, the armature of an annular electromagnet 57 connected by fasteners 58 to a fixed part, such as the gearbox housing of a motor vehicle for example.
As it emerges from the above, when the windings of the electromagnet 57 are not supplied, the springs 55 maintain the plate 53 forming the frame: in a position for which the friction lining of the clutch disc 51 is clamped against the bell 38. The latter being integral with the housing 2, which is itself carried by the flywheel 1 directly driven by the motor shaft, it follows that the movement of the latter is transmitted by means of the sleeve 50 to the sleeve 16.
The rotational movement that the sleeve 16 receives is transmitted to the weight holder plate 43. The weights are, consequently, driven in a movement of revolution, so that they are subjected to the effects of the centrifugal force which tends to make them. rotate around their axis 41 in the direction of arrow f1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the pivoting of the weights, the front face 39a of which is suitably shaped * has the effect of moving in the direction of arrow f2 the rollers 23 on which they bear and, consequently, the annular rim is moved in the same meaning.
The movement along the arrow f2du annular flange 20 is transmitted, via the deputy bearing 24, to the annular ring 25, which has the effect of moving the fingers 34, which push the friction plate 7, in the direction for whereby it clamps the friction linings of the clutch disc 9 against the intermediate friction plate 6 which in turn clamps the friction linings of the clutch disc 8 against the flywheel 1 thereby producing the clutch.
As is well known, the amplitude of the pivoting movement of the weights 39 is a function of the speed of rotation of the motor shaft and it follows that the torque transmitted by the clutch is also a function of the speed. of rotation of the engine, which makes it possible by suitably choosing the shape and the mass of the weights 39 'to transmit to the clutch torques determined as a function of the speed of an engine of known characteristics.
When the windings of the electromagnet 57 are energized, this has the effect of attracting the armature 53 which is quickly braked and immobilized. When this armature is attracted, the friction lining of the clutch disc 51 is no longer clamped against the bottom of the bell 38, so that the rotational movement, in which the latter is entered! - born, does not is no longer transmitted to the sleeve 16 which is immobilized due to the braking to which the armature 53 is subjected.
The immobilization of the sleeve 16 has the effect of interrupting the movement of revolution in which the weights 39 were driven, so that the centrifugal force no longer being exerted on them, they are returned to their initial position under the 'influence of the springs 33 which relax and which move the annular ring 25, as well as the annular flange 20 carrying the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
rollers 23, in the opposite direction to that of the arrow f,
The compartment 37 being completely isolated from the friction members of the clutch mechanism, it becomes possible to introduce into this compartment a load of lubricant which has the effect of reducing the friction that may exist between the various moving parts and completely annihilate the risk of jamming.
According to fig. 2, the annular ring 25 has, near its periphery, a series of equally spaced holes 30 in which bushings 60 for supporting open cups 61 are engaged against the bottom 62 of which the springs 33 are supported. The free end of these springs which are arranged concentrically, pushes a border .63 formed by slides 64.
The front end of the slides 64 is in contact with one of the ends of fingers 34 passed through guides 66 integral with the flange 3. In this manner, the free end of the fingers 34 bears against the pressure ring 7.
The shape of the weights 39 is chosen so that a portion 319 of their part cooperating with the roller 23 is shaped as an arc of a circle, the center of curvature of which is approximately located at the location designated by the reference 39a. The other portion of the useful part of each of these weights, designated by the reference 392, is shaped as an arc of a larger radius and the center of curvature of which is located substantially at 39a2.
In addition, it is advantageous that the general conformation of each flyweight. is determined so that their center of gravity, when they are in the high position, that is to say when the clutch is produced, is located substantially at 393, that is to say at the level of the part useful of the stop 421, formed by the front wall of the branches of each of the yokes 42.
In the example shown, the pressure rings 6 and 7 are spaced from the friction linings of the clutch discs 8, 9 by means of springs 67, 68 arranged,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
on the one hand, between the flywheel 1 and the ring 6 and, on the other hand, between the latter ring and the pressure ring 7.
These springs work, in this way, in an antagonistic manner, which makes it possible to ensure the proper spacing of the pressure rings when disengaging, without it being necessary for their forces to be great. Due to the reduced action of these springs they intervene only slightly on the friction rings 6,8 and therefore on the springs 33 to which they are antagonistic. It is in this way possible that the weights 39 are light, even when the clutch has to transmit a high torque.
Indeed, the portion 391 of the cam, formed by the weights, having a small radius of curvature, the games existing between the friction linings and the pressure rings are absorbed for a small displacement of the weights, although the action of the centrifugal force exerted on them may be low, precisely because of the weakness of the springs 67, 68.
The other portion 392 of the weights having a large radius of curvature, compared to that of the curvature 391 ', it follows that the angular displacement of the weights is relatively large for a small axial displacement of the roller holder 20, so that the transmitted force is at this moment very large and that consequently a large pressure is applied on the friction linings to the clutch discs 8, 9, by ± 'the intermediary of the springs 33, however limiting the magnitude of this pressure to a corresponding determined rate to their force, so that the clutch cannot transmit a higher torque than that for which it was normally calculated.
The invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiment shown and described in detail, since various modifications can be made to it without departing from its scope.
