@ The present invention relates to a process and a device for the manufacture of hollow bodies, such as playing balls, floating animals and the like, which consist of two or more parts of convex shape. or other corresponding form connected in a gas-tight manner at their edges.
A drawback of the method of manufacture commonly applied heretofore of these hollow bodies lies in the fact that the thicknesses of the walls of the shaped parts of the finished hollow body differ greatly from one another. This is the manufacture of playing balls, which must have a uniform elasticity, this variation in the thickness of the walls is very detrimental.
To obtain, using the device according to the invention, hollow bodies whose walls have substantially the same thickness everywhere, the procedure is as follows:
A part heated until it is deformable is placed on an opening of a tube and is fixed by its edges, in an airtight manner, directly or indirectly to the edges of the tube. After that, a piston fitted in an airtight manner in the tube in question and whose part facing the aforesaid part has the desired convex shape is brought into contact with this part.
At the same time, the air between the part, the top wall of the tube and the domed surface of the piston is removed by suction, while the piston is moved against the aforementioned part, until it is applied. intimately by all its parts on the convex surface of the piston.
The room can then be heated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
kill on one or both sides of it. When the desired deformability of the part is reached, it begins to deform. The piston moves with its domed part against the part firmly clamped at its edges, while the air between the part and the piston is evacuated by suction. In this way, an intimate application of the part on the convex surface of the piston is ensured, the constituent material of the part in question having an elasticity such that during its deformation the walls of the deformed parts of the part are substantially uniform.
A device for carrying out the method according to the invention is characterized in that in a shaped tube corresponding to the profile of the hollow body to be manufactured is mounted a movable piston adapted in an airtight manner in said tube, this piston having the side facing towards the opening of the tube the convex shape of the hollow body to be obtained. In this device, means are provided which press a part covering the opening of the tube, in a uniform and airtight manner, on the edge of the tube, so as to form a closed and airtight enclosure. above the piston, enclosure in laquel- it opens an air suction line, which can be connected to a source ae vida, during movement of the piston towards the room.
By suitably combining the forward movement of the piston and the suction of air, it is therefore possible to manufacture parts of hollow bodies, for example in resin or artificial material, which exhibit substantially in all respects a uniform wall thickness.
When these hollow body parts are then assembled along their mainter borus to form a

conducts are regulated in relation to each other. When the piston has reached a given position, the suction is initiated.
The piston is moved, being in contact by the convex part 5 with the part 1 until this part is applied at all its points, in a sealed manner, against the surface of the convex part 5 of the piston. The piston is then withdrawn and moved away from the curved part 1, the latter being replaced by a corresponding preheated flat part, after which the above-described bending operation is repeated.
The domed bullet parts 1 are then cut off their edges and welded or glued to each other. In order to fill the ball with air, a plug 9 is provided, in a manner known per se, which is mounted on the inner face of the wall of the ball. In this plug is provided * an enclosure 10 closed on all sides, which enclosure is filled with a liquid suitable for gluing and sealing the piercing channel formed in the cap. To fill the ball with air or another gas, the stopper 9 is pierced with a needle, the latter being directed so as to pass through the chamber 10. When the needle is withdrawn, the liquid contained in the enclosure 10 comes into action and closes the piercing pipe.
Likewise, it is also possible to manufacture hollow bodies of irregular shape. The section of the pipe 2 and of the piston 4, as well as the shape of the convex part 5 of this piston, are adapted to the shape of the article to be manufactured.
