<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The invention relates to lateral flow rakes and / or windrow turners for raking hay and other crops, these machines being of the type comprising several raking wheels mounted so as to be able to rotate with them. their planes of rotation inclined with respect to the direction of advance of the machine on the ground during raking, that is to say for raking with lateral flow and turning of windrows, the arrangement being such that during raking the crop passes from one raking wheel to the adjacent wheel.
Machines of this type are known in which the raking wheels are mounted so as to rotate freely around their individual axes while being driven by the contact of their raking points or teeth with the ground or with the crop. A machine of this type is described in a French patent application filed September 16, 1955 with the same name under the title "Improvements made to lateral flow rakes and windrow turners".
According to a variant, the raking wheels of a machine of the type in question can be positively driven by a suitable transmission by the load wheels which support the machine by resting on the ground or the raking wheels can also be driven by a mechanism. suitable engine, for example by an engine mounted on the machine itself or by the propellant tractor engine.
The object of the invention is to make such a machine of the kind in question that it can, if desired, be easily adapted to be able to function equally well for the tedding of the crop.
According to the invention, the machine is made to include auxiliary means for moving it forward over the ground, when it is desired to use the machine as a tedder, in a direction transverse to the direction of travel on the ground at the same time. during raking, with the machine advancing in a direction such that each part of the crop to be wilted comes into contact with one raking wheel only without being passed to the next adjacent side wheel so that it - the remainder, in the faded or turned over state, behind each individual raking wheel.
More particularly in the case where the raking wheels are positively driven by a suitable motor mechanism, the machine itself may include a motor mechanism to advance it in the aforesaid transverse direction for tedding.
On the other hand, when the machine is arranged so as to advance over the ground with the aid of a propelling tractor and when the raking wheels are positively driven by this tractor or by means of a transmission for the carrying wheels, the Auxiliary means referred to above preferably include a drawbar or other auxiliary means for attaching the machine to the tractor for advancing it in said transverse direction for tedding.
When the machine moves forward using a drawbar for tedding, the aforesaid auxiliary means may include a second drawbar, in addition to that used to move the machine forward on the ground, for side-flow raking and / or for turning swaths.
According to a variant and preferably, these auxiliary means may comprise means for removably mounting said coupling bar for raking at lateral flow and / or for turning swaths, as well as means for mounting this coupling bar. bar in a second
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
position on the machine in order to be able to advance it in the aforementioned transverse direction for tedding.
Instead of constituting the auxiliary means in the form of a drawbar, in the case of a machine propelled by a tractor, these auxiliary means may comprise means for mounting the machine, in a removable manner, on the tractor, in such a way that it advances in the aforesaid transverse direction for tedding.
When the machine is constructed in this way, the load wheels can be omitted and it can be mounted on a usual support intended to support agricultural implements at three points, the machine having spaced fixing points with the aid of which it can be attached to the aforesaid support of the tractor, the planes of the raking wheels being inclined at different angles with respect to the direction of advance of the tractor on the ground, so that in one position the machine can function as a side-flow rake or as a windrow turner while in the other position it can function as a tedder as described above.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in plan, an embodiment of a lateral flow rake convertible into a windrow turner and vice versa, the machine also being able to function as a tedder, in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 shows, in perspective, a detail of the same machine.
Figure 3 shows, similarly, a slight variation of this detail.
The machine, as shown, is constituted in a general manner, as described in the previous patent application referred to above, this machine comprising a frame 10 provided with two side members 11 and 12, the length of the side member 12 corresponding to , in substance, half that of the spar 11.
The two side members 11 and 12 comprise means for respectively supporting six and three raking wheels 13 which can turn freely on one end of bent axles 14, the opposite end of each of these axles being articulated to the corresponding side member in such a manner. that each raking wheel can move freely up and down independently of the other raking wheels with respect to the machine frame to accommodate irregularities in the soil or crop surface, as described in the earlier patent application aforesaid.
This up and down movement is regulated by springs 15 and a mechanism, controlled by hand for lifting the raking wheels, generally designated 16, is preferably provided to move these wheels away from the ground for transport. .
The direction of travel of the machine on the ground, when it is used for side flow raking and / or for turning swaths, is indicated by arrow 17. The machine has six raking wheels 13 on each side. all and these wheels, when you want to make the machine work as a side-flow rake, are mounted, as shown in solid lines, on the side member 11.
-Means are provided, as described in the previous patent application, to allow the three wheels, that is to say the wheels 13a, which are located at the front of these six raking wheels, can be brought to their position 13b for turning the windrows in which they are mounted on the side member 12, so that instead of a single row of raking wheels there are two rows of wheels which are spaced transversely with respect to in the sense of the advancement of the machine
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ne, indicated by arrow 17.
The planes of the raking wheels 13, when the machine is arranged so as to be able to function both for raking with lateral flow and as a windrow turner, are inclined with respect to the direction of travel of the machine, designated by the arrow 17, forming an angle such with this direction that the raking wheels turn by the contact of their peripheral raking points or teeth 18 with the soil or the crop.
It can easily be seen from the drawing that the adjacent raking wheels in each row partially overlap with each other in such a way that with the exception of the wheel, which is at the front in each row (in direction of travel indicated by arrow 17), each raking wheel is placed, in part, behind the immediately adjacent wheel in the row.
Consequently, the crop is touched by the tips or teeth of the front raking wheel of each row and is pushed back by this wheel laterally to the machine to be picked up by the immediately following wheel, which is partly behind the rake. first. The crop thus passes successively from one wheel to the next, along each row of raking wheels from the front end to the rear end of each row, that is to say following a direction inclined in relation to that in which the machine moves during raking as indicated by arrow 17.
The machine, as shown, comprises two load wheels 19, 20 at the front and two load wheels 21, 22 at the rear, the wheels 19, 21 and 22 occupying the positions described in the previous patent application, the wheel front 19 being mounted so as to be directing, the orientation of the planes of rotation of the two rear wheels 21 and 22 being adjustable about a vertical axis using a lever and a toothed sector, described in earlier patent application and generally designated by 23.
As described in the previous patent application, the front steering wheel 19 comprises a drawbar 24 connected to the propelled tractor.
The other front wheel 20, which does not exist in the machine described in the previous patent application, is mounted on the front end of the short spar 12.
According to the invention and for the particular embodiment of the machine shown in the drawing, the two front wheels 19 and 20 are swiveling and the drawbar 24 is detachably connected to the wheel. front 19 by establishing a connection with removable fixing bolts 27 between this bar and the forked lower end of the pivot 25 of the wheel.
On the upper end of this pivot 25, the linkage of the drawbar 24 is engaged in a removable manner. Means are provided for mounting the detachable linkage of the drawbar 24 on the pivot 26 of the further front swivel wheel 20; as very visible in figo 2 which shows in detail the embodiment of the detachable link established between the drawbar 24 and the pivot of the front wheel 20, in particular the location of the fixing bolts 27 which allow the drawbar 24 to be connected to the branches 28 of the forked lower end of either of these wheel pivots, the arrangement being such that when the fixing bolts 27 are removed, the arm 29 of the coupling bar can be released by sliding,
the upper end of the wheel pivot, this arm comprising a hole in which the upper end of the linkage of the drawbar 24 is engaged in one or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the other of its two positions.
These means for mounting the connection for the drawbar 24 on the front swivel wheel 19 as well as on the second front swivel wheel 20 as well as the means for performing this mounting, constitute the auxiliary means, referred to above, for move the machine forward, when used as a tedder, in the direction of arrow 30, transversely with respect to the direction of travel along arrow 17, during raking.
For the variant shown in part in FIG. 3, instead of providing a detachable connection between the drawbar 24 and each of the front caster wheels 19, 20, the drawbar can be mounted, permanently, on the front caster wheel 19 of. in the manner indicated in the previous patent application and this swivel wheel 19 as well as the swivel wheel 20 are mounted in a detachable manner on the frame of the machine, for example by making it comprise a clamp 31 which can be engaged, in a removable manner, on the ordinary sleeve 32 in which the pivot of the pivoting wheel is journaled in the usual manner.
The arrangement is such that for tedding the wheels 19 and 20 are interchanged so that the drawbar 24 now occupies the "tedding" position shown in solid lines in FIG. 1 while the wheel 20 is mounted near the front end of the frame member 11.
One or the other of the arrangements, shown in figs. 2 and 3, allows the machine to actually advance in the direction, indicated by arrow 30, to allow tedding, the position of mechanism 23 with lever and toothed sector, described in the previous patent application, being modified. - bound so as to allow the two rear carrying wheels 21 and 22 to be oriented such that their planes of rotation are kept parallel, by the mechanism 23 with lever and toothed sector, in the direction 30 corresponding to the tedding.
If the machine is pulled in the direction of arrow 30, the planes of rotation of the raking wheels 13, whether some of these wheels are in their position 13b, or all the wheels are in their side-flow raking position (shown in solid lines) , are all inclined, for example by approximately 30 to 40, relative to the direction of advance of the machine during tedding, these wheels rotating by their contact with the ground or with the crop. Considering FIG, 1, it can be seen that the raking wheels continue to rotate in the same direction as when the machine advances, for. raking, in the direction of arrow 17.
However, as the machine moves in the direction of arrow 30, each raking wheel (except the one at the front) in each row is no longer behind the adjacent wheel which is closer to the front end of each row so that the crop, which is turned over by the raking effect of each individual wheel in each row, is not touched by the immediately following raking wheel, i.e. - say part of the crop is solicited by a raking wheel only without having passed, through this wheel, to the immediately following wheel. The crop is, therefore, left, in a wilted or stirred state, behind each raking wheel as the machine moves in the direction of arrow 30.
In order to be able to see the effect of the machine during tedding, we show schematically at 33 a part of the crop to be withered at the moment when this part is about to be touched by the raking wheel which is the most forward, that is to say the wheel 13 of the row of six wheels mounted on the side member 11.
When the machine moves in the direction of arrow 30, this part 33 of the crop is moved.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
raked laterally by the raking wheel 13c up to position 33a in which it is behind (with respect to the direction of travel30), the raking wheel 13d, immediately following, so as to be clearly separated from this wheel instead of being picked up by it as would certainly happen if the machine were to move in the direction of arrow 17 for raking.
In practice, in order to carry out the tedding with the particular machine as shown, all the raking wheels occupy their position, corresponding to the lateral flow raking, on the sill 11 in order to avoid any possibility that the crop could be touched. by the raking wheels which have been left in position 13b corresponding to the turning of swaths, so as to be pushed back laterally while being touched by the three raking wheels which are located at the rear of the beam 11. On the other hand , by placing all the rake wheels for fa- ning in the position shown in broken lines, the machine can operate on a harvesting belt, having a maximum width, with very high efficiency.
On the other hand, for turning swaths, the three raking wheels, which are located at the rear of the spar 11, were placed in the position suitable for this turning on the spar 12 and if the two spars were more so that in the case of the example shown the machine could be used for tedding, although the arrangement described above is preferred.
The above-mentioned conversion of the raking machine, that is, for side-flow raking or swath turning, into a tedder, takes place without the need to move any of the raking wheels from their raking position to a special tedding position relative to the machine frame, the only operation required, to specifically convert the machine to a tedder, being the displacement of the drawbar link 24, from the 'one or the other of the ways indicated above, from the raking position shown in broken lines to the position shown in solid lines for tedding, together with the adjustment of the planes of rotation of the two load wheels rear 21, 22.
Therefore, the conversion of the machine from raking machine to tedder can be done in a particularly simple manner. The invention can be applied to existing machines, of the type specified, because for the particular machine described in the previous patent application it suffices to modify the toothed sectors of the mechanism 23 with lever and toothed sector and to bring in a wheel. additional front 20 with the detachable mounting mode on each of the two front wheels 19, 20 of the linkage of the drawbar 24.
The conversion of the machine from a tedder to a rake is carried out by proceeding in the reverse order of what is described above.
The two rear load wheels 21 and 22 constitute means for controlling the direction in that, as described in the earlier patent application and during operation of the machine for raking or tedding, they are prevented from swaying. so that it is certain that the machine advances without deviating laterally from the desired direction. Although it is preferred to have recourse to two wheels of this type, it is possible, without departing from the protection limits of the invention, to make the machine comprise, in the case where it comprises two front wheels 19, 20, a single rear load wheel, mounted as described.
