<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
45 et la pression exercée par le ressort est telle que pendant le fonctionnement normal la plaque de support se pose à plat sur le rotor et le registre occupe sa position de fermeture, de telle sorte que les graines prises entre les dents du rotor animé d'un mouvement de rotation sont projetées par l'ouverture 40 en dessous de la plaque 42 dans la chambre d'alimentation 27;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

This invention relates to machines for planting or distributing seeds, seeds or other materials and more particularly, although not exclusively, to machines for planting the natural seeds of cotton.
According to the invention, the instrument or machine for planting or distributing seeds or other matter in or on the ground comprises a container for the material to be planted or distributed, the bottom of which is mounted so as to be able to turn and which is capable of feed the seeds, or the like, to an opening in one side of the container, a rotary feed member adjacent to this container and a portion of the periphery of which has teeth or is provided with a device. distributor for seeds or other materials, that part of the periphery of the feed member passing through the above-mentioned opening and 'being

radially the bottom of the container, the arrangement being such that during operation of the machine the bottom can receive a rotational movement to drive the seeds, or the like, around the container, towards the bottom. feeder where the seeds can be collected and sent through this opening by the feeder to be planted or distributed in or on the ground.
Seeds brought from the container may fall by gravity into an adjacent box or discharge conduit, and the latter may include a stripper device for removing the seeds from the tines. Further, a flexible shutter mechanism may be provided to increase the effective area of the opening or orifice through which the seeds are supplied from the container, this mechanism being arranged to be actuated by the seeds or other material engaged. between the teeth of the feeding organ.
Such an arrangement is particularly advantageous in machines serving for planting natural cotton seeds, in which the fluff or down of the seeds tends to accumulate and cause waterlogging and consequently stop the planting.
The box or the discharge duct may be provided internally with a removable shutter or valves arranged in alternating order along the duct and intended to regulate the passage of the seeds step by step, so as to ensure a positive control of the discharge of the seeds. seeds coming from the duct and thus ensuring a predetermined spacing of the seeds planted in the soil.
In order to better understand the invention and to show the manner in which it can be put into practice, it will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

The machine shown in figs. 1 to 7 is intended to be hitched to a cross bar or frame which can be fixed, for example, to the hydraulic lifting mechanism of an agricultural tractor. One or more of these machines can be connected to the frame or bar and when two or more machines are employed, these are spaced along the length of the frame or bar. As the machines are identical in shape, the following description of one of them will apply to all the others.
Each machine includes one. main frame generally designated by the numeral 1, which has two parallel side members 2 suitably spaced angles 2 and provided at their front ends with brackets 3 by means of which the side rails can be connected to the frame or drawbar.
The main frame 1 supports a container 5, comprising an annular casting provided with a peripheral wall.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
vertical 6 to which is removably attached the lower part of a cylindrical seed hopper 7, the peripheral wall 6 having a reduced diameter part 8 which engages in the lower end of the hopper and forms a circumferential outer shoulder 9 on which the wall of the hopper can rest. The container 5 has a central descending boss 10 which forms a cushion for a vertical shaft 11, to the upper end of which is fixed a circular plate 12 which can turn counterclockwise, inside the container. annular.
Plate 12 forms the base of the hopper and has a higher level inner circular portion 13 which forms a circumferential wall or shoulder 14 spaced radially inward from the edge of plate 12 and delimiting an outer peripheral portion 15 of this plate.
A, the raised interior part 13 of the bottom plate. is fixed a deflector cone 16 whose base has a diameter smaller than that of the raised part 13. The angle at the top of the deflector cone is approximately 1200, a cone of this angle being suitable for deflecting the seeds. , such as natural cotton seeds, towards the outer peripheral part 15 of the bottom plate. The angle of the cone can obviously be chosen according to the particular nature of the seeds or seeds to be used. Six agitator arms 17 are evenly spaced around and attached to the curved wall of cone 16, and each arm extends from bottom to top and radially outward and its free end deviates from the direction of rotation. cone and bottom plate 12.
The arrangement is such that when the plate and the cone rotate, the arms 17 can stir the seeds covering the outer peripheral part 15 of the base plate. If desired, two of the arms 17, or additional agitator arms mounted on the cone, can be arranged to extend generally radially inwardly so as to agitate the seeds located towards the center of the cone. the hopper above the cone.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Immediately behind the hopper, a vertical control shaft 18 is provided for a rotor 19 provided with peripheral teeth 20 and capable of rotating in the same direction as the plate 12.
The rotor is mounted in a housing 21 provided with side ears
22 bolted to the upper flanges of the side members 2. The shaft 18 is journaled in a bearing 23 descending from a transverse part 24- also fixed to the side members 2, and the upper end of the shaft 18 passes through an opening formed in the bottom 25 of the housing 21 and the feed rotor 19 is keyed therein.
The front part of the housing 21 is open. and is arranged to coincide with a circumferential discharge opening 26 provided at the rear of the container 5, such that when the rotor turns its toothed portion passes into cover 26, radially covering the surface of the rotor. peripheral part 15 of plate 12, as shown in FIG. 5.
The rear part of the casing is gradually connected to an integral supply chamber 27, directed downwards, including the. side walls are connected to an outlet 28, of reduced cross section, connected to a seed discharge pipe 29 which descends to the rear shoe of a share 30 (see fig 1). The arrangement is such that the seeds removed from the hopper by the toothed rotor 19, are partially entrained around the housing 21 by the rotor and discharged into the feed chamber 27, and can then fall by gravity therein and into the latter. the discharge duct 29.
The rotor 19 has between its upper and lower faces a circumferential groove 30 (see FIG. 6) which extends inwards over a radial distance corresponding to the toothed peripheral part of the rotor. Inside the feed chamber 27 is a sector-shaped stripping member 31
Provided at one end with a flange 32 connected, for example by cotter pins or rivets, to a side wall of the chamber.
The free end of the plate 31 advances towards the center of the rotor and is freely slidably engaged in the groove 30. As
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
it is represented in fig. 5, -the stripper member has a -arched edge 33 and this member is disposed, so that any cotton seed or other seed which would not have left the rotor during the rotation and would have remained inside a gap or gap between adjacent rotor teeth will subsequently be removed by contact with the arcuate edge of the plate 31.
The plate or stripper member thus acts in such a way that the seeds withdrawn from the hopper 5 by the rotor will be discharged into the feed chamber to be deposited on the ground, and any tendency of the seeds to be carried away by the - continuous movement of the rotor and return to the container will be avoided or minimized.
The hopper is provided with internal baffles 34 arranged so as to release the outer peripheral part 15 of the bottom plate 12 from the pressure due to the weight of the seeds contained in the hopper, the baffle approximately having the shape of a truncated cone. . The baffle may extend partially around the perimeter of the interior space of the hopper so as to provide a gap or opening in the baffle at the rear of the hopper above the discharge opening 26, and the baffle distance between the lower part of the baffle and the bottom plate 12 may be approximately equal to one third of the height of the hopper.
When the seeds descend on the outer peripheral part of the plate 12, they are drawn towards the rear of the hopper where they are caught up by the teeth, rotating in the opposite lesons, of the rotor 19, and are transported successively through the opening 26 in the feed chamber 27. The plate
12 and the rotor thus cooperate to accomplish a first stage of the segregation of the seeds and in order to promote regular arrival and segregation of the seeds, the outer peripheral part 15 of the plate is provided with curved grooves 35.
These grooves start from the edge of the plate 12 and are inclined towards the inside in the direction of rotation of the plate, so

Immediately above the rotor 19, and inside the hopper 5 is a segment-shaped screen 36 (figs. 7,
8 and 9) come integrally with the curved plate 37 and provided, on its opposite sides, with ears 38 fixed in a removable manner to the wall of the container by screws 39. As shown in Figure fig. 9: the screen 36 covers the toothed peripheral part of the rotor inside the container, except on the feed side of the rotor at A (fig. 9), where the successive teeth take the seeds from the tray 12 and transport them into the feed chamber.
The upper face of the screen is tilted and curved downwards, so that the seeds that are above the end portion of the screen in the region corresponding to the feed side of the rotor are directed towards the sides. teeth of the latter, while the seeds which are above the remaining part of the screen are diverted from the teeth of the rotor and deflected towards 1 plate 12, so that these seeds are carried around the hopper towards the feed side of the rotor.
In this way, the screen facilitates the passage of seeds on the feed side of the rotor and prevents jamming or blocking of the seeds on the other side, or unblocking side of the rotor.
An opening 40 is formed in the plate 37 below the screen, this opening being disposed on the feed side of the rotor and delimiting the feed opening through which the seeds are driven by the teeth of the rotor.
The feed opening 40 extends vertically above the rotor at 40a (fig. 7) and this extension of the opening is normally closed by a vertical register 41 which comes into contact with the inner or front face. of plate 37 is
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is arranged to be able to slide vertically relative to the latter, so as to increase the effective area or passage section of the feed opening. The register 41 is integral with a support plate made of a sheet 42 and starts from the bottom to the top of the front end of this plate 42 arranged inside the housing 21 and resiliently biased in contact with the face. top of the feed rotor.
The support plate 42 is. shaped, along one side, so as to adapt to the curvature of the adjacent wall of the casing 21, and at its front end, the support plate has a portion cut away from the side of the register to form a shoulder 43 (fig 5) capable of coming into contact with the rear face of the vertical plate 37 to contribute to the positioning of the plate 42 so as to keep the register or the shutter in the suitable sliding position inside of the part 40a forming the extension of the feed opening.
The support plate is pushed back against the rotor by a spring 44 housed between the support plate and an upper arm 45 of an angled support bracket.
46 mounted on the adjacent lug 22 of the housing 21. The upper part of the spring 44 engages a pin 47 descending from the arm
45 and the pressure exerted by the spring is such that during normal operation the support plate rests flat on the rotor and the register occupies its closed position, so that the seeds caught between the teeth of the driven rotor a rotational movement is projected by the opening 40 below the plate 42 in the feed chamber 27;
However, in the event that a few seeds are stuck between the teeth of the rotor or are partially stuck by the side edges of the teeth, those seeds will actuate the spring-loaded shutter mechanism to move the shutter 41 upward and -increase. . thus the effective area of the feed opening.
In this way, the stuck seeds entrained along the horizontal circular path of the rotor can pass through the opening.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
enlarged, thus minimizing the risk of injuring or crushing stuck seeds, which could occur if the seed passage opening had rigidly fixed dimensions *
The feed rotor 19 and the bottom plate 12 of the hopper are controlled by a rear wheel 48 mounted between support bearings 49 descending from the side members 2.
,. The rear wheel carries a chain wheel 50 engaged with a chain 51 passing around a chain wheel 52 keyed to one end of a transverse drive shaft 53. The opposite end of the shaft 53 carries a pinion. 54 forming part of a gear change mechanism generally indicated at 55, by means of which motion is transmitted to a pinion
56 keyed on a shaft, transverse 57 journaled in bearings 58 descending from the side members 2. The transverse shaft 57 carries a bevel pinion 59 which meshes with a bevel pinion 60 to transmit movement to a vertical shaft 61 journaled in a bearing 62 and bearing a pinion 63.
The latter engages a pinion with straight teeth 64 keyed on the shaft 11, so as to make the plate 12 turn, and this pinion also turns the feed rotor by means of a toothed wheel 65 keyed on shaft 18. The gear change mechanism comprises a selector locking system which allows the angular speed of the feed rotor and of the plate 12 to be varied when necessary by an appropriate selection of the wheels. changing so as to ensure a predetermined degree of supply of seeds to the discharge conduit.
The control, of the documentation rotor and of the base plate can, if one is delirious, be carried out by means of a power take-off on an agricultural tractor, or other driving device used for the planting machine.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the coulter
30 is supported at its front extract by a transverse shaft 66
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
carried by the side members 2 and the rear part of the share is connected to two side plates 67 spaced transversely and supported by inclined fittings 68 descending from the side members 2. The lower end of the supply duct 29 enters the space between the side plates 67 and the lower parts of the latter are inclined inwards as indicated at '67a (see fig. 3) so that the seeds which - fall from the lower end of the feed duct are directed in the furrow dug by the share.
Behind it are the laterally spaced burrowing organs 69 and. adjustable vertically, which are supported by the fittings 70 descending from the side members 2 and are intended to cover the seeds with earth, the soil then being compacted by the rear wheel
48.
A scraper 71 is fitted between the rear ends of the side members 2 to remove the earth adhering to the tire of the rear wheel *
1a variant shown in FIGS. 8 and 9 comprises a hopper and a rotating bottom plate which are approximately identical in shape and arranged to function in a similar manner to the corresponding elements of the embodiment first described. However, in figs. 8 and 9A secondary feed rotor 73., having bosses or hubs 74 and 75 flaring up and down and radially outward to mate with a lower circular flange 76, is mounted on shaft 18 'of the toothed feed rotor indicated at 72.
The rim 76 forms the rotating base of the feed chamber 27 'through which the seeds can fall by gravity after being admitted from the hopper onto the toothed rotor 72. The walls of the feed chamber 27' are formed by side cheeks 77 which, starting from the hopper, surround the two feed rotors so as to close the space between them. The rear ends of the side cheeks 77 connect to a seed discharge conduit which descends towards the share.

Any fluff, fluff or other loose material which collects around the rotor can be removed by the hook-shaped tooth 80 of the latter and sent inside the chabre 27 'to be discharged through the discharge duct.
As in the first embodiment, the rotating deflector cone and the agitator arms mounted therein ensure continuity of flow from top to bottom. seed down into the hopper. After passing through the feed opening, the seeds fall from the teeth of the upper rotor 72 and descend by gravity into the chamber 27 'from where they are deflected by the bosses of the secondary rotor 73 - on the lower rim 76. The passage of the seeds in the feed chamber 27 'and the deflection by the conical surfaces of the secondary rotor produce a new segregation of the seed which avoids any intermittence in the ejection of the seeds from the hopper by the rotor. toothed 72.
The conical surfaces of the secondary rotor and associated deflection plates 78, 79 are such as to maintain this secondary segregation of the seed even when the machine is moved over uneven and inclined terrain. In this way, the seeds are finally deposited so to speak evenly around the splined rim of the secondary rotor and are drawn rearward over the underlying transmission and gently diverted from the splined rim by the deflection plate. obliquely arranged
79. The seeds then descend into the discharge conduit in a regular and continuous current, in general, to be deposited in the furrow opened by the share.
It will be understood that in each of the embodiments described above, the rotational movement of the bottom plate and the toothed feed rotor rotates the seeds themselves as they pass through the discharge conduit, and this is. particularly advantageous for planting seeds, such as natural cotton seeds, because the down
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
or enveloping wad is wrapped intimately around the core, which facilitates uniform and continuous seeding.
The rate at which the seeds are brought from the hopper can be further regulated by the provision of an adjustable valve or valve on the feed side of the upper toothed rotor, to allow the dimensions of the feed opening to be varied.
The. The profile of the teeth of rotor 19 or rotor 72 is preferably such that the grooves of these teeth are approximately semicircular, while their leading edges are generally radial, so as to aid reception and advancement of the seeds in the feed opening. The rear edges of the tines, however, may be curved so as to provide a vacuum to allow the seeds to easily disengage to fall into the. feed chamber.
When the machine is to be used for sowing seeds other than cotton, suitable modifications can be made to the profile of the feed rotor teeth. For example, the number and spacing of the teeth can be varied according to the type of seeds, while for the advancement of small seeds, the rotor can be provided on its periphery with a brush formed of bristles or natural fibers. or; artificial.
The main frame of the machine can be mounted on an infra-structure which carries at its rear end the rear load wheel, the front end of the infra-structure being connected to the mechanism intended to ensure the adjustment of the depth of penetration. soo in the ground.
The embodiments described with reference to FIGS.
1 to 7 and in figs. 8 and 9, can be modified by incorporating the device shown in figs. 10 to 12 and which cpmprend a curved plate 81 integral with ears 82 and reliable in the opening formed on one side of the hopper. The plaque
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
81 is internally provided with a screen in the form of a segment 83 and is similar to the corresponding plate 37 of the previous embodiments, but, as shown in FIG. 10, the screen 83 is extended so as to protrude slightly on the raised part 13 of the rotating base plate
12.
Below the screen 83, the plate is provided with an elongated opening into which penetrates a seed segregation and feed rotor 84, the toothed peripheral part of which is arranged so as to radially cover the outer peripheral part 15 of the seed. baseplate.
Below the screen 83 is a deflector 85 formed of a metal strip and provided at its rear end with a lug through which passes a screw 86 which secures the deflector to the screen. The deflector has at its rear end a curved portion 87 extending from the interior face of the plate 81 to the rear end of the elongated opening formed therein across the peripheral portion 15 of the base plate, the wall or the shoulder 14 of the raised part 13 of this plate.
The rear end 87 of the deflector connects to a part 88 which extends around the shoulder 14, the part 88 having to. its free end before an edge inclined from bottom to top towards the rear 89. As shown in fig 10, the part which. is completely m at the free end of the deflector protrudes from the edge of the screen.
The arrangement is such that the cottonseeds entrained by the rotating bottom plate and passing below the screen 83 are deflected through the parts 87 and 88 of the deflector towards the pockets or gaps of the feed or rotor rotor. distribution 84, which has the effect of facilitating le'rilling the pockets of the rotor. Excess seeds which cannot be picked up by the rotor and which cannot enter the space below the screen, are directed upwards by the sloping edge 89 of the deflector on the screen and
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
the raised part 13 of the bottom plate.
In this way, damage to the seeds by crushing between the periphery of the feed or distributor rotor and the counter-rotating shoulder of the base plate is avoided or minimized.
The embodiments described may also include a seed conveyor device, as shown in Figs. , 13 to 15, arranged to form the pipe or discharge chute into which the seeds can fall by gravity after being delivered by the hopper. As shown in figs. 13 to 15, the modified discharge line, comprises a feed or distribution chute 91 which descends from a feed chamber, one of which is. part is shown at 92 and in which the seeds can be brought from the hopper by the toothed rotor. The supply chamber 92 and the duct 91 are carried by the frame of the apparatus, a main longitudinal part of which is shown at 93.
The duct, which can advantageously be made of sheet metal, is approximately rectangular in cross section and is so arranged that the seeds can be discharged from its lower end to be distributed along a furrow dug in the soil by a share or similar device.
In the duct are placed four registers or valves
94, 95, 96 and 97, each carried by a rod 98 mounted so as to be able to pivot at its two extracted in support bearings
99 attached to opposing sidewalls of the duct with the rods evenly spaced along the length of the duct. The alternating order registers or valves 94, 96 and 95, 97 are positively connected to each other and a mechanism is provided to bring them from an inclined closing position as is shown for registers 95 and 97 on the fig. 13, to a more steeply inclined open position shown for registers 94 and 96.
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
In the present embodiment, the control mechanism comprises a cam wheel 100 shown on a shaft 111 that a suitable transmission actuated for example by a rear wheel of the apparatus can rotate in synchronism with the tooth rotor. , the camwheel 100 having on its periphery projections 112 acting as cams. Two angled levers 114 and 115 each having an arm 116 carrying a roller or driven element 117 which comes into contact with the periphery of the cam wheel 110 are articulated on a bracket 113 fixed to the part 93 of the frame.
Each elbow lever also comprises an econd arm 118, that of the lever 114 being connected by a connecting rod 119 to a lever 120 fixed to the shaft 98 of the register 96, and that of the lever 115 being connected by a connecting rod 121 to a lever.
122 fixed on the shaft 98 of the register 97. The lever 120 associated with the register 96 is provided with a. arm or an extension 123, the free end of which is attacked by a rod 124 connected at its upper end to a lever 125 fixed to the shaft 98 of the register 94.
At the end of the shaft 98 of the lower register 97 opposite to that where the lever 122 is located is fixed a lever 126 connected by a rod 127 to the free end of a lever 128 not mounted on the shaft of the register 95 The registers are arranged so as to be biased towards their closed positions by a spring device which, in the present embodiment comprises a coil spring 129 located on one side of the duct and connected on the one hand to the. 'end of a lever arm 128 and on the other hand to a support bracket 130 at the upper end of the pipe and a coil spring 131 located on the opposite side of the pipe and positively connected to the lever arm 125 of the register 4 .
As shown in fig. 13, the cam projections 112 have relatively steeply sloping up and down edges so that rapid opening and closing movement of the dampers can be achieved.

In use, the arrangement is such that when the seed or seed planting instrument moves over the ground, the cam wheel 100 rotates, so that the alternate order registers 94, 96 and 95, 97 are opened. or firm, so that when a register is opened, the adjacent register is firm 'The seeds sent after segregation into the feed chamber 92 by the toothed rotor, -drop by.,' gravity on the highest register 94 which is supposed to occupy its closed position and when a cam projection 112 o'clock and oscillates the elbow lever 114,
registers 94 and 96 open and the seeds resting on the upper face of register 94 fall on the upper face of the adjacent register
95 which is then in its closed position. The camwheel 100 continuing to rotate causes the driven member of the crank lever 114 to move from the cam projection on the lower part of the periphery of the cam, so that the return spring 131 returns the registers. 94 and 96 in their closed position.
Thus, register 94 is ready to receive and momentarily support other seeds falling from the feed chamber.
92. In the meantime, the driven element of the elbow lever 115 is struck and lifted by the next protrusion of the cam wheel.
100, so that registers 95 and 97 open, and the seeds supported by register 95 can then fall on register 96 and be momentarily supported by register
96. Bundles or groups of seeds can thus be caused to fall successively, step by step, in the duct 91 and when covering the lowest register 97 the seeds which it supports are unloaded from this distribution duct to be planted. in the furrow.
In the present embodiment, which is intended more particularly for use in a machine for planting natural cotton seeds, the feeding or distribution of the seeds is regulated in such a way that the seeds falling from one register onto the next register in groups of two

or three seeds per group, and the groups each containing the desired number of seeds are finally discharged intermittently when register 97 is opened to be planted at predetermined intervals spaced according to the speed at which the machine is moved on the machine. ground. Planting the seeds at suitably spaced intervals can thus be accomplished in a manner similar to that normally applied in row crop cultivation methods.
The positive intermittent opening and closing of final register 97, and the relatively short drop of the latter to the ground, helps to eliminate or minimize unwanted seed scattering and maintain a desired regular spacing of planting groups. seeds.- In addition, the rapid opening and closing of the registers ensures a positive interruption of the passage of the seeds in the duct and a planting at a relatively high speed, with exactly determined spacing, of regulated quantities of seeds.
