<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a ferromagnetic core having substantially the shape of a hollow torus subdivided into lamellae by radial planes, that is to say planes passing through the axis of the torus, and through the minus one transverse plane, in particular for a transformer or a choke coil.
Compared to cores made up of stacked sheets in the form of E and I, this cylinder head transformer allows for an iron saving of 17% and a copper saving of about 8%. In addition, the stray field of the transformer (or the choke coil) can be very low. However, the manufacture of trapezoidal lamellae presents difficulties. The invention provides a suitable and sufficiently inexpensive method of manufacturing the core.
According to the invention, each of the parts of the core, separated by a transverse plane, is produced in a single operation by exerting on an intermediate product, essentially annular and subdivided, by radial planes, into strips preferably isolated from each other, in a matrix , with the aid of a cylindrical or tubular punch of suitable shape, an axial pressure such that the desired shape is obtained.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, gives a clear understanding of how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course, forming part of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 show in two views a U-shaped lamella of the type of which the core according to the invention is made.
Fig. 3 represents the complete transformer,
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate some embodiments of the process according to the invention.
The strip 1 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, is of trapezoidal section, which implies that, for the same section of the material, the width of one of the arms must be notably greater than that of the other arm.
Fig. 3 shows a yoke transformer whose toroldal core ;, consisting of such strips, comprises two parts II and 13 separated by a transverse surface, namely a flat surface (air gap) 9) perpendicular to the axis of the torus. Part 11 can be constituted by strips isolated from one another, affecting the shape of strip 1 in FIG. 1; : the upper part 13 may be formed by U-shaped slats; with shorter arms, having the shape shown in dotted lines in FIG. 1.
The manufacture of two kinds of lamellae with arms of different lengths makes it possible to produce three cores of different axial dimensions, namely the type shown in FIG. 3, a shorter type consisting only of lamellae 15 and a longer type consisting only of lamellae 1.
The closed magnetic circuit, formed by the assembly of two lamellae 1 and 15 has everywhere the same cross section, so that the average magnetic induction (B) is everywhere the same, which implies that the material of the core is used. as efficiently as possible.
On the right part of fig. 3, a 90-degree sector of the core 11, 13 has been removed, in order to show the location of the winding 17.
This is purely annular, unlike the more -eu less rectangular windings demanded by the transformer, the core of which is formed by sheets in the form of 'E or I. The annular form offers a large
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
advantage, because it allows to wind easily and with the best fill factor; moreover, for a given iron section, the average length of the turns is as small as possible. With the core surrounding the entire winding, the length of the magnetic circuit - and therefore the amount of iron needed - can be kept to a minimum, while the outer stray field is reduced to a small area near the air gap 9.
In one place, a small sector of the core 11, 13 has been omitted for the passage of the connection tabs 19 of the winding 17. Through the central opening of the toroldal core, one can pass a bolt 21 which allows to mount the core in a very simple way. and without a bracket or other means of attachment to a support in the form of a plate (not shown in the drawing).
Figs. 4 and 5 show in perspective a die 23 cut by an axial plane, with a corresponding punch 25, making it possible to produce one of the parts 11 and 13 (or both), separated by the air gap 9, of the toroidal core of FIG. 3. For this purpose, we start with a discoid intermediate product (platinized :) 29, consisting of strips 27 of trapezoidal section, comprising a central opening, and slipped on a central mandrel 31 of the die 23, mandrel which fits into said central opening. The lamellae 27 may be cut from a strip of rolled or drawn iron strip of trapezoidal section and are lined in advance, for example by treatment with a phosphorus compound, with a layer of insulating phosphate resistant to high pressures.
The strips 27 can be assembled in the matrix or else in a gauge so as to constitute a discoid plate; in the latter case, the strips can be coated with glue to prevent the platen from disintegrating.
After the plate 29 has been put in place, the punch 26 exerts on the plate such a great thrust that the material is extruded.
Fig. 5 shows the final position in which the slats 27 have acquired the U-shape shown in FIG. 2, such that the section of the material is approximately constant over the entire length.
. During the removal (exit from the die) of the half-core thus obtained - which can be facilitated by producing, in a known manner the cylindrical surfaces, slightly conical and by the use of a bottom 33 acting as an ejector in the matrix 23 - special precautions must be taken, for example surrounding the half-core with a hoop, to avoid disintegration into independent lamellae because these fit exactly and cannot be assembled in another order of succession . The band may be accommodated in a suitable groove 35 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5), which groove may be formed along the interior wall between the die 23 and a detachable portion 27 thereof. During ejection, the deformed plate 29 passes in front of this groove.
During annealing, necessary to remove internal stresses, the hoop surrounding the half-core is held in place. If necessary, the hoop can then be replaced by a larger hoop in order to line the juxtaposed strips with a certain clearance with an insulating layer or else to reinforce the insulating layer which already existed. The bearing surfaces of the half-cores (11 and 13 in fig. 3), namely the upper sides of the extruded plate 29 'in fig. 5, are finally completed, for example by grinding, in order to obtain an assembly as precise as possible of the two half-cores, with an air gap reduced to a minimum.
The final shape of the slats may be that shown in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
freezes 1, although the inner arm (the widest) of the U may also be shorter than the other or even not exist, in which case, for the lamellae of the other half-core, the outer arm, i.e. the cylinder head. In all cases, the section of the material is practically constant over the entire length of the strip.
It goes without saying that one of the half-cores can also be produced according to the method described, and the other according to another method. The method described can also be carried out using a press in which the punch 25 occupies, relative to the die, the position shown in FIG. 5, while the bottom 33 of the die constitutes a punch which can be lifted.
