<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The present invention relates to bungs for openings provided in the walls of receptacles and relates in particular to combinations of bungs with the walls of receptacles, in which these walls are formed by sheets provided with an external or internal coating, or the of them.
Steel containers for transport, especially those that fall under the category of steel barrels and drums, were created many years ago and are currently established in such a way that they -

consti: lmen t urJ. packing material ext: r: 1tÎnJt. vi.mpp: r: tft; Ut, po'4}; "the transport of a large number of goods. These receptacles have found wide application for the transport of goods which do not affect steel, nor are they affected by the steel of which these receptacles are made.
These have been found to be so useful and effective that there is a demand for these same receptacles with inner linings to protect the goods against corrosion, contamination, etc. The industry has been able to establish such coatings, which can be employed in an efficient manner.
From the beginning, so to speak, of the use of steel drums of reduced weight, it has become common practice to provide the outer face thereof with a coating, in order to protect the steel. and in order to give the containers a clean and attractive appearance. This was done for many years by applying paint and varnish to the drums after their formation. The results have been quite satisfactory; however, this coating process requires considerable labor, material and horizontal space given the need, among other things, to apply the varnish to the finished barrels, to subject them to baking in ovens and in addition, or alternatively transport the drums a considerable distance in the air, in order to allow the solidification of the varnish.
Attempts to apply a coating in a similar manner to the interior surfaces of assembled drums, particularly where these are not provided with a removable bottom, involve so many additional factors. that the results obtained hardly compensate for the efforts expended.
In recent years, at least one industrialist created exterior coatings which could be applied to flat sheets, prior to their transformation into drums, which were resistant to deterioration and breakage. from the operations to which the sheet was subjected and from the equipment used for the transformation of such sheets into drums. More recently, coatings have been created intended for the interior coating of drums, as well as their mode of application to flat sheets, so that these coatings can withstand the operations of transforming the sheets into drums, without undergoing deterioration. - rations or ruptures.
Some of these coatings not only offer good adhesion to metal, like the exterior coatings just mentioned, but also great toughness. Others of these coatings, such as "Saran" adhere well to metal and provide good coatings to prevent contact between food products and the metal of the container; on the other hand, they crack quite easily.
EMI1.2
The application of bungs or collars to the openings provided in the sheets thus coated, and the shaping of these sheets with a view to receiving such bungs, impose complicated problems. The perforation and stamping of such sheets, according to the methods practiced to date, as well as the action of fixing in these perforations pre-prepared bungs, could not be applied where the sheets were coated with advance, either externally or internally or both, without the risk of scratching or cracking the coating. When the exterior coating of the barrel is scuffed or broken, the barrel presents an unattractive appearance and the metal may be exposed to corrosion. Thus, the coating loses its full effectiveness and the quality of the product is reduced.
When the inner lining of the drum is badly scuffed or has serious cracks, the drum becomes unusable as a

was internally protected, since the contents of food or chemical products, for example, could come into contact with the metal and be contaminated by it.
Thus, there is a great need for plugs and methods of applying them, which could be used without giving rise to the grounds for rejecting such drums as commercial products.
The inventors have satisfied this demand and have solved the problem in a markedly economical manner. They achieved this while making it possible to manufacture the elements of the bung and their application to the walls of the receptacle, without deviating significantly from already existing methods and without making significant modifications to the manufacturing or application equipment, with which all gun manufacturers in the world are equipped. In addition, the bungs according to the invention allow the use of stoppers and caps in a manner similar to that to which workers in this industry are accustomed.
Starting from the above, an important object of the invention consists in improving the plugs for the walls of receptacles, as well as their mode of application to these walls.
Another important object of the invention consists in establishing bungs provided for coated sheets, intended for the manufacture of containers, as well as the method of applying these bungs to such walls.
Another object of the invention * consists in establishing such bungs and in applying them to the sheets used for shaping the walls of containers, without damaging the lean applied on the inside or on the outside of these walls. .
Another object of the invention consists in establishing bungs which are neither liable to contaminate the contents of transport containers coated internally, nor to be contaminated by this content.
Another object of the invention consists in establishing such bungs formed with a view to receiving closure elements, the latter also being designed with a view to avoiding contamination of the contents of the container.
Another object of the invention is to make such bungs and to apply them to the walls of the receptacles, this execution and this application being such that the receptacles of which the bungs in question form part can be used for the transport of goods not. contaminated, once the receptacle is deemed to be unsuitable for the transport of contaminated products. Other more detailed objects of the invention will in part be self-evident and will in part be made evident in the course of the description of the invention, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 16 is a view similar to FIG. 15, in which the part of the covering forming the collar is removed, leaving a portion which surrounds the base of the metal bung, as well as a plug which is screwed into the latter bung and covered with a cap,
As shown in fig. 1, the bung according to the invention generally consists of a base 1 and a vertical collar 2.
The base 1, which preferably has a circular outline, has a series of bosses 3, pushed back into the material of the sheet itself. These bosses point upward along part of the outer surface of the collar 2; on the other hand, they move outwards from this collar. Preferably, these bosses are formed by a stamping or die-forging operation, which results in the lower face of the base 1 being hollow as shown in 4. The base 1 of the bung goes outwards, from the bosses 3, over a relatively large area, as shown in 5.
The collar 2 is internally threaded over a significant part of its height, as indicated at 6, and is internally overbore en7, above this thread, for a purpose which will emerge below. It is not necessary to adopt a determined number of bosses 3; however, in the case of a bung fitted with a pipe thread, with an inside diameter of 2 inches, such as that shown in fig. 6, there should be a round number of eight bosses.
It goes without saying that the sheet 8 of the barrel, as shown in FIG. 7, is provided at 9 with an opening having a diameter suitable for receiving the outer surface of the collar 2 'The opening 9 is further provided with an appropriate number of notches made at 10 and intended to receive in close contact a corresponding number of bosses 3; In addition, the sheet metal wall 8 of the container is stamped, outside the notches 10, so as to have a rib 11 facing upwards. As shown in fig. 8., the rib 11 is arranged so as to substantially overhang the outer edge of the base 1 of the bung.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
As shown in figs. 3 and 4, the retaining collar has an upper part 12 of cylindrical shape, the inside diameter of which is substantially identical to the outside diameter of the collar 2, this collar also having a flared lower part 13. The perimeter of the collar is such that the end edge 14 of the part 13 bears on the inner face of the rib 11 in the vicinity of the base thereof, as shown in FIG. 8, after this retaining collar has been assembled with the bung and the sheet of the drum. The inner surface of the flared portion 13 is friendly with a packing ring 15. This packing ring is formed of a material which is preferably applied in a fluid state and which solidifies by adhering to the metal of the collar.
It is understood that the plug according to the present invention can be used effectively to frame the openings provided in steel receptacles the walls of which have neither interior coating nor exterior coating. It is also applicable in containers having pre-coated outer surfaces, but in which these walls have no inner coating and where the problem of contamination of the contents of the container by the raw metal of the bung or the wall of the valve. receptacle does not appear.
The application of the plug to such a container not provided with an inner coating is shown in FIG. $. It will be seen in the figure that the collar 2 of the bung has been inserted from bottom to top through the opening provided in the wall of the receptacle, the bosses 3 fitting into the notches designated by 10. The collar 12 covers the collar 2, the extreme edge 14 of this collar being in contact with the inner surface of the rib 11. The upper part 5 of the base of the bung is pushed upwards against the lower face of the bung. sheet of the barrel, which corresponds to the inner face of the rib 11, this base being held against said surface by the fact that the part 7 of the collar of the bung is bent or re-edged outwards, over from the upper end of the collar 12.
This last operation aims on the other hand to tighten the collar 12 tightly against the rib 11, so that the plug is tightly tight against the sheet metal of the barrel. The packing ring 15 prevents any leakage between the wall 5 of the base of the flange and the lower surface of the drum plate. The flange is thus able to receive a sealing plug which can be covered with a capsule, as shown in fig 16.
Mechanisms have been provided to prevent the plug in a positive manner from rotating with respect to the sheet metal of the drum. Any risk of the bosses 3 emerging from the notches provided in the sheet metal of the barrel and in which these bosses are engaged is eliminated by the fact that the end 14 of the collar is in contact with the body of the barrel at one point. immediately adjacent to the base of the notches 10, while the bung is held in tight contact against the body of the barrel by its interaction with the collar 12.
The rib 13 ensures that this interaction is very intimate, in that this rib prevents any tendency of the collar to relax outwardly with respect to the body of the barrel. The only part of the body of the barrel with a risk of damage to the outer shroud is inside the collar 12 and therefore cannot be seen.
In certain cases, the execution of the plug in materials insensitive to the action of the contents of the container offers a solution to the problems posed by containers provided with liners, or interior coatings. Examples that may be cited are cases where the plug is made of stainless steel or aluminum, instead of ordinary steel. However, means should be provided to prevent the contents of the receptacles from reaching the bare edges of the sheet; of casing around opening 9 and to prevent ruptures of the interior lining in places where the contents may come into contact with the underlying metal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Protection against these possible causes of trouble is provided by the use of a ring of suitable plastic material, which is arranged around the base of the drain. This ring, shown at 16 in FIG. 9, generally has a U-shaped section and comprises a web 17 and flanges 18 and 19 oriented inwardly and which cover the upper and lower surfaces of the base of the bung a slight distance from the edge, so that the ring 16 occupies a stable position as soon as it is fitted.
At the point where the plug is applied to the container by a pressing and flanging operation, just like that referred to in connection with FIG. 8, the flange 19 of the ring "16 is firmly fixed in the hollow 20 which exists under the rib 11. Thus any risk of the contents of the container coming into contact with the unprotected steel of the body of the container. barrel, at places such as the raw edges 9 and 10, is removed by the action of the wing 19 which acts as a packing ring. It should further be noted that the coated inner surface 21 of the wall 8 of the drum is located slightly below the upper surface of the bung hole 5. This has the effect of restricting the passage between the edge of this flange and the recess 20, so that the wing 19 cannot be pushed back while fixing the plug.
On the contrary, the constituent material of the wing 19 tends rather to be pushed inwards. It emerges from this description that when the contents of the container are such as to be able to be protected against contamination by the use of the appropriate material in the construction of the bungs, the assembly thus established meets all the requirements.
When it is necessary and desirable to isolate the metal of the bung from the contents of the container, this can be achieved by the application of the cover gasket, shown in figs. 10 and 11, on the drain as shown in figs. 12 to 15. This covering element will preferably be made of a suitable plastic material offering sufficient rigidity, while showing adequate flexibility in order to exert a self-packing action, this plastic material being on the other hand. inert vis-à-vis the contents of the container, as is the coating material 21 intended for the wall thereof. Polyethylene is an advantageous example of a material suitable for this purpose.
The cover member shown here and generally designated 25, has a main portion 26 forming a collar and the outer surface 27 of which is shaped so as to adhere closely to the threaded portion 6 of the bung collar, while penetrating between the ridges. threads of a sufficient quantity to be partially engaged therewith.
The upper end of the collar 26 of the cover member has an outer annular flange 28 which rests on the surface, normally intended to receive a packing ring and formed by the upper end of the threads 6 and by the part. 7 folded outwards. The engagement thus produced suffices, together with the partial engagement between the threads 6 and the portions of plastic material 27, to keep the collar of the covering element inside the collar of the bung during their simultaneous application to the wall of the container, as well as in the following, during use of the cover element.
The interior of the collar 26 of the covering trim has threads 29 over most of its height, as well as a seat 30, intended to receive a trim ring, on the upper sotextréity.
These details of the relief effectively receive a close contact closure plug, so as to form with these details a leak-proof seal, such a plug being shown in FIG. 15.
From the lower end of the collar 26, the cover trim extends outwards at 31, over the entire width of the underside of the base of the bung, then moves upwards at 32, in applying against the periphery of this plug and then back to 1 '
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
interior in the form of a rib or wing 33, similar to the rib 19 of Fig. 9. It goes without saying that all the surfaces of the metal bung, liable to come into contact with the contents of the container and to contaminate it. here, are now covered and protected by the cover trim.
When it comes to fixing in the opening of the wall of a receptacle a metal bung as described above and provided with a covering gasket, the first operation consists in applying the gasket to the bung. This can be achieved - assuming that the cover liner has been made of a sufficiently flexible material - by flexing the appropriate parts of this liner by an amount sufficient to thread the collar 26 into the collar 2 of the bung and to flex the parts 32 and 33 outwardly in a sufficient quantity to allow the base 1 of the plug to penetrate. If necessary, the cover lining can be slightly heated in order to soften it, which facilitates the work.
Another way to do this is to mold the cover trim in place over the bung, providing the trim with threads or other gripping elements during this overmolding. By proceeding in this way; the covering gasket embraces the bung in an even more intimate way, given that the constituent material of the gasket is introduced completely between the threads of the metal bung and not in a partial way, as in the case where the filling is applied in the cold state
Assuming that the cover trim has been placed on the drain, as shown in fig.
12, the plug is inserted into the perforation provided in the barrel sheet metal, so that the collar 12 exceeds the collar 2 of the plug and that the projections 3 coincide with the notches 10. Then, by the appropriate action of a press , we push back the base of the bung, together with the cover trim, by acting from the underside of the sheet metal of the barrel, so that the flange 33 penetrates from the bottom up into the hollow 20 and is firmly pushed into it. this. At the same time, the thinner upper end 7 is folded in close contact over the upper end 12 of the collar, so as to keep the whole assembly in tight engagement.
This has the effect of pressing the collar 12, 13 tightly down against the outer surface of the rib 11 at location 14, which involves the effect acting in the opposite direction of holding or tightening the bung and its covering gasket against the part of the underside of the sheet metal of the barrel, which surrounds the perforation provided in this sheet.
The rib 33 is drawn in close contact upwards into the orifice 20 and is prevented from disengaging therefrom by the constriction of the opening between the upper edge of the base of the bung and the wall of the recess 20.
In addition, the material constituting the rib 33 is compressed in sealing contact in the recess 20, thus preventing any infiltration, therethrough, in the direction of the bare metal of the edge of the sheet metal of the barrel and furthermore fills the cavity. important function consisting of serving as a cushion between the metal bung and the sheet of the drum, so as to prevent the breaking of the coating or coating 21.
The sealed nature of this method of attachment emerges from the fact that the constituent material of part 31 of the cover trim is forced upwards into the notches 4 provided in the underside of the base of the bung, as shown in 34 in fig. 14. This, together with the watertight fixing with respect to the rib 33, as well as other features of mutual engagement between the plug and the cover trim, prevented the latter from rotating with respect to the plug and, therefore, relative to the wall of the container.
Thus, any breakage of the coating as a result of the rotation of the cover
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
contact with this coating is prevented., As the plug is positively prevented from rotating with respect to the drum plate by the interaction between the protrusions 3 and the notches 10, the risk of the coating bursting. as a result of the rotation of any organs in contact is definitively eliminated.
The closure of the orifice by the cover gasket 25 is shown in figure 15 Here, a sealing plug 35 is screwed in.
36 in the threaded part 29 of the collar 26 of this gasket. This sealing plug may be made of the same material as the gasket or of a different material, provided that it offers sufficient resistance to the action of the conneny @ container. This stopper, preferably made of a strong plastic material, is formed so as to present at the upper end of its threads 36 a portion 37 forming a sealing ring and which is applied against a sealing seat 30. The stopper has, above part 37, a shoulder 38 extending outwardly and terminating in a lip 39 of reduced thickness, which partially covers the folded-down part 7.
Appropriate gripping means for a key are formed in the upper face of the stopper and penetrate from top to bottom into the body thereof, so that the stopper can be tightly clamped, so that its gasket portion 37 engages. contact with seat 30 of the packing ring. When this is done properly, a tight, leak-proof seal is obtained and a perfectly effective seal.
As an additional safeguard against the risk of leaks, this closure will preferably be provided with a capsule 40. The latter generally has an upper face in the form of a disc, surrounded by a portion 41 below, part of which is in contact with it. the lip 39 and forces the latter against the portion 7, the other part of which carries its own sealing ring 42. The packing ring 42 is preferably cast in place in the capsule and fills the space located above the rim 7 and under the hollow, 41. The capsule 40 is fixed in place by the fact that its skirt 43 is pulled down and pinched inwards against the collar 12 below the rim 7.
Such a capsule is provided with suitable tear lines in order to allow its destruction but cannot be violated in an undetectable manner, without the destruction resulting., This capsule is also leak-proof. Thus, a closure of increased efficiency is obtained when such a capsule is used in conjunction with the stopper 35.
When the coating of the inner surface of the drum plate 8 is worn or cracked, or when it is decided that an inner coating of the container is no longer necessary, the coating can be easily removed thereby facilitating the installation. use of the barrel for goods which are not likely to be contaminated by the metal of the bung, insi, a large bung opening is obtained, which can be closed in the usual way, as shown in fig 16. Here the portion 31 of the covering lining has been cut at 44 and the part 26 forming the collar of this lining has been lifted.
However, as the portions 32 and 33 of this gasket still remain, the tightness of the plug is in no way affected,
The plug intended to close the orifice in the bung thus transformed consists of a threaded body 45 having a seat 46 for a packing ring and carrying a suitable packing ring 47, fixed in leak-proof contact against the inner portion of the gasket. end 7 of reduced thickness, as indicated at 48. The head 49 of the stopper is also in contact with this surface at 50, so that the packing ring 47 is encased on all sides by metal, when it occupies a position appropriate. Here too, a suitable cap 51 can be attached to the stopper if necessary.
The upper face of this capsule has a lowered peripheral portion 52, in contact with which is cast a packing ring 53, so that the latter is in contact with the upper portion 7 of the collar.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
after application of the capsule. The latter is also fixed in place by the fact that the skirt 54 is pulled down and pinched against part 12 of the collar
