L'invention a donc pour buts de simplifier la fabrication des récipients afin d'éliminer une partie notable du travail imposé jusqu'ici au fabricant du récipient en ce qui concerne la fermeture de ce dernier; de fournir un dispositif de fermeture permettant le remplissage du récipient à travers une ouverture du plus grand diamètre possible, la fermeture du récipient se faisant après son remplissage; de fournir un dispositif de fermeture complètement assemblé et ne pouvant être fracturé, et applicable rapidement et efficacement à l'ouverture dans la paroi du récipient par celui qui remplit ce dernier; de fournir un dispositif de fermeture présentant une surface supérieure plane et qui peut être serti sur le col de l'ouverture du récipient sans l'emploi d'une enclume de support;

Device for closing a container
The present invention relates to a device for closing a container and relates in particular to the closing of large containers to which the closing device can be applied once the container has moreover been completely finished and filled.
It is also sought to obtain a complete closure device which can be attached to a neck arranged around the opening in a wall of the container after the latter has been filled. This dise sition has the advantage of allowing the manufacturer of large containers such as buckets, tubs or drums, to attach to the opening of the container. provides a light and economical cap for transport to the container filling station where this cap can be removed, the container then being filled through the largest possible opening and, finally, fitted with the closure device mounted on the Col de Fouverture.
Heretofore, in order to attach closures to a container from the outside after filling, it has been necessary to have an annular recess in the upper surface of the ironing device forming a space for receiving an anvil. support for the tool intended to crimp the closure device on the neck and against which the profile of the opening and that of the neck are pressed during crimping.
In many cases, such a recess in the upper surface of the closure device is not advantageous. It contributes to the accumulation of water or other foreign matter which can rust or otherwise damage the closure device, or enter the container when opening the latter.
One possible solution is to crimp on a closure flange a plug having an annular recess for a support anvil and then crimp a separate closure cap onto this assembly. However, this construction requires two operations and also requires the employment of two different tools, so that it is not economically advantageous. Another solution to the problem of crimping a closure device to a neck opening is to deform the neck and the outer wall inward.
This construction has several drawbacks, the most obvious of which is that once a closure device is in place, the neck is permanently deformed, which excludes any reuse.
By studying the use of ever lighter metals to form large containers, the need for a light and economical closure - in relation to the low cost of the containers has become urgent. A closure device has therefore been sought constructed and applied in such a way that after the contents of the container have been dispensed, it is possible to reuse the container by removing the initial closure flange from the neck using a special tool. This can be done without deforming the neck, so that the container can be refilled and receive a new closure.
Another disadvantage of constructions in which deformation of the neck is produced during crimping is that it is necessary to use a neck initially having a vertical outer wall. Such a construction does not allow efficient attachment of a cap which is however an important factor, particularly when the container is to be stored for a substantial period of time between manufacture and filling.
The problem has been solved by the use of a particular neck making it possible to effectively crimp on the container a closure device having a flat upper surface, without deformation of the coi.
This operation involves a complete step and the use of a single tool and results in a light closure exhibiting structural qualities which heretofore only been found in much heavier closures. In addition, the closure device provides high radial rigidity making it possible to withstand severe stresses frequently applied to the closure during crimping and during impacts.
The object of the invention is therefore to simplify the manufacture of the containers in order to eliminate a significant part of the work imposed hitherto on the manufacturer of the container as regards the closing of the latter; to provide a closure device allowing the container to be filled through an opening of the largest possible diameter, the container being closed after it has been filled; to provide a completely assembled closure device that cannot be fractured, and applicable quickly and efficiently to the opening in the wall of the container by the person who fills the latter; to provide a closure device having a planar top surface which can be crimped onto the neck of the container opening without the use of a supporting anvil;
to allow the crimping of the closure device on the neck of the receptacle without deforming this neck; to provide a rigid closure device which can take a number of different shapes depending on the contents of the container and the manner of dispensing that content; and to provide a closure device of rigid structure exhibiting high resistance to radial deformation across the cover of the container.

The device shown in FIG. 1 comprises a closing flange 1, a closing cap 2 and a cap 3. It is intended to be applied on a container wall 4 having an opening 5 and a neck 6 standing vertically around the opening. The neck first has a first curved part 7 extending upwards from the wall 4; it continues from part 7 by a part 8 extending upwards and outwards, and a rounded end 9 forming a heel, and by a second part 10 extending downwards and towards the outside. interior.
Part 10 overlaps and tightly engages first part 8 along its entire length, so that the double-ply part comprising parts 8 and 10 has a frustoconical shape extending from the curved single-ply part 7 at a large angle. relative to the axis of the opening.
The neck described is formed in the wall of the container by the manufacturer of the latter, the opening having a large standard dimension allowing easy filling of the container. The manufacturer can further place an inexpensive cap 11 (Fig. 6) over the opening, this cap being arranged to be attached to the neck by hand. The container can then be sent to the filling station which can store it for an indefinite period, if necessary, without any foreign material being able to enter the container.
The container is then filled through the large opening, after which a closure of any type or size is applied and assembled to the neck of the opening.
The closure device shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 is supplied as a complete unit by the manufacturer and comprises on its closure flange 1 a peripheral fixing section 12. The fixing section 12 has a first part 13 extending vertically upwards, a second part 14 inclined upwards and outwards from the end of the first part, a rounded upper part 15 and an outer peripheral wall 16 extending downwards from part 15. An annular surface 17 extends radially inward from the lower end of the attachment section 12.
From the inner periphery of the surface 17 extends downwardly a skirt comprising a portion 18 inclined downwardly and inwardly and a film wall 19 extending downwardly. The skirt of the cheek defines the opening through which the contents of the container are dispensed and the closure cap 2 screws into part 19. The cap 2 has a bottom 20 and a threaded side wall 21 extending vertically around the cheek. bottom and ending in a head 22 projecting radially outward. A seal seat t 23 is disposed below the head 22 and receives a seal 24.
In the body of the cap 2 are fixed a torsion piece comprising a flat base 25 resting on the bottom of the cap 20 and two torsion tabs 26 extending from the base 25 over the height of the side wall 21 of the cap and fixed in head 22.
In the variant shown in FIG. 5, the stopper is made of synthetic plastic, for example polyethylene or polypropylene. This plug has a configuration similar to that of FIG. 1 with a bottom 30 and a threaded side wall 31 terminating at its upper end with a head 32 projecting radially outwards. A seal seat 33 is disposed below the head 32 and receives a seal 34. Two torsion tabs 36 are integrally formed with the plug.
To complete the closure device, the latter comprises the sealing cap 3 (fig. 1 and 3) having a flat upper part 27 and a side wall 28 projecting laterally around the upper part. Two tear lugs 29 protrude radially outward from the base of wall 28 and extend to the ends of a diametrical tear tape 37 formed in the top and side walls of the capsule. This tape 37 is defined by two lines of weakness 37a to facilitate tearing.
At a more advanced stage, the full closure device is applied to the neck surrounding the opening of the container in a single operation and after the container has been filled through opening 5. The full closure device (fig. 3) is assembled by the manufacturer of said device which firstly screws the plug 2 into the flange 1. In this operation, a sufficient torque is applied to the plug by the tabs 26 to compress the seal 24 against the part 18. The plug is tight in the neck of the flange until the head 22 of the stopper comes into contact with part 18 along a line 38 (fig. 2).
This contact constitutes an effective stop to avoid a more intense compression of the seal beyond the point where a satisfactory seal is ensured. It also prevents damage to seal 24 by excessive tightening of the plug in the flange.
The annular surface 17 determines the size of the dispensing opening and a standard size closure plug is engaged in the neck. However, openings of various sizes can be used simply by modifying the surface 17, allowing the use of various types of dispensing means, while at the same time allowing the container to be filled through an opening of maximum diameter.
The closure device is completed by placing the capsule 3 on the cap and the flange, the side wall 28 of the capsule easily engaging the outer peripheral wall 16 of the flange 1 with sufficient clamping to hold the capsule in place during transport. . The closure device is then delivered in this form to the purchaser who, after filling the container through the opening 5, simply places the closure device on the neck of the opening as shown in FIG. 2. The rounded upper part 15 of the fastening section 12 of the closure flange 1 carries a sealing material cast into its concave surface in fluid form which, after engagement, becomes an elastic seal shown at 39 in FIG. 2.
This seal conforms to the rounded upper end part 9 of the neck and cooperates with the latter to form an effective seal against leaks between the flange and the wall of the container.
Fig. 12 shows the closure device crimped onto the neck of the opening by an operation which will be described later. The particular shape of the fixing section 12 of the closure flange 1 is such that the first vertical part 13 is in contact at 40 with the radial surface towards the inside of the part 7 of single thickness of the neck. The second part 14 inclined upwards and outwards is parallel to the surface facing inwardly of the frustoconical part 10 and covers this surface. It can be seen clearly in FIG. 12 that when the closure device is crimped onto the neck, the fastening section of the flange tightly engages the neck around its entire periphery, providing a very tight attachment which has heretofore been only encountered with larger devices. heavy.
Not only does the configuration given to the flange ensure an excellent seal against leaks, but the neck of the opening is reinforced over its entire periphery by another layer of material constituting an extremely rigid protective wall around the closure.
An important feature of the device described (Figs. 2 and 12) is that the wall 4 of the container, the annular surface 17 and the lower part of the head 22 of the closure cap all lie in a common horizontal plane. The purpose of this arrangement is to form a continuous rigid wall across the entire closure of the container wall. It should be remembered that the disclosed closure device is intended for use on large steel drums, for example 250 liters, although the device is not limited to such containers. The closure device used in large capacity receptacles must be strong enough to withstand the shocks imparted to it when the receptacles fall from a height of the order of a meter or more.
This type of drop test must be performed before the closure can be recognized as industrially acceptable. Keeping in mind the severe stresses which a closure of this type must withstand, one can easily appreciate the importance of a continuous coplanar surface across the entire closure. The construction described provides such a degree of strength and rigidity that the closure is considerably improved over known closures.
Another characteristic of the device described lies in the way of applying the closure device to the opening of the wall of the container.
This operation is shown in fig. 7 to 10. Figs. 7 and 8 relate to a known closure device in order to clearly show the advantage of the new device deorit. We see in fig. 7 a tool used to apply the known closure device of the general type indicated, this tool being operable by hand or by a motive force. In both cases, it comprises a closure sleeve 41, closure jaws 42 having an engaging leg 43, and a pressure pad 44. The pressure pad 44 has an engaging surface 45 of an anvil of pressure. support t 46 which extends inwardly beyond a fastener 47 so as to oppose the engagement legs 43.
For the crimping, the sleeve 41 is pushed down so as to bear against the jaws 42, pushing these downwards towards the anvil 46 of the pressure pad, which produces the crimping of the fastener. 47 inwards around neck 6.
Fig. 9 mounts the attachment of the closure device described on the opening of the wall of a container by means of a tool of the general type shown in FIG. 7. In this case, however, the tool has a planar lower engagement surface 48 on the pressure pad 44, which surface bears on the planar upper surface of the closure cap. In many cases, it is highly undesirable to have an annular recess beyond the fastener to facilitate the use of a support anvil. This recess allows for the accumulation of water or any other foreign matter which can rust the closure or damage it in various ways.
In addition, the sludge which may be accumulated in the closure device can access the interior of the container when the latter is opened, which must of course be avoided.
The problems which arise in obtaining a closure device capable of being applied without the use of a supporting anvil are important. A closing device such as that shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 cannot be applied to an opening by means of a tool having a flat pressure pad, because in this case there is not sufficient radial support in the opening to prevent radial deformation towards inside. Consequently, this results in a deformation of the neck so that a cap can no longer be properly fitted to the neck.
The device described, however, where the wall 4 of the container, the surface 17 and the lower part of the head 22 of the stopper form a flat rigid wall, completely avoids any distortion of the assembly when the latter is applied with a tool. with a flat pressure pad.
Further, the manner in which the fastening parts 13 and 14 cooperate with the neck 6 allows the closure device to be initially brought into a position of close engagement with the neck of the opening by means of a purely vertical force applied by the opening. 'intermediate the engagement surface 48 and ensures sufficient rigidity to the neck so that after this first placement, the wall 28 of the capsule and the outer wall 16 of the fastener can be crimped inwardly simul t around neck 6 as shown in fig.
13, without any deformation of the neck.
It has been found that with the disclosed fastener, a closure device can be effectively crimped into the neck opening without the use of a supporting anvil such as anvil 46 of FIG. 7, and this without inadmissible distortion of the closure device or the neck. Another advantage of the device described lies in the fact that, although this device is especially useful in the field of light transport drums, it also allows the closing of drums intended to be reused. In the latter case, the closure flange can be lifted away from the neck with a hand tool without producing any untoward distortion of the neck, after which a new closure device can be applied. This is possible because no cervical deformation occurs in the initial fixation of the device.
Reuse would also be impossible if the neck was deformed during the crimping operation. Another advantage of this particular necked opening, compared to an opening initially rectilinear and then deformed inwardly during the application of the closure device, lies in the fact that a protective cap such as that shown in fig. 6 can be easily mounted and fixed on the neck for the purpose indicated above.
Two variants are shown in fig. 13 and 14. They are particularly useful for containers which have an interior coating, for example lacquered containers, to prevent their contents from coming into direct contact with the metal of the walls. It is easily understood that the closures for such containers must also have a coating. In these variants, a closing plug 50 comprises sealing means arranged on its lower surface and which cooperate with a sealing part 51 arranged at the lower end of the skirt 52 of the flange. The sealing piece 51 comprises a part turned inwards and upwards forming an annular groove in one piece at the base of the skirt of the flange.
In fig. 13, the lower wall portion 53 of a plastic plug engages the inner edge 54 directed upwardly of the part 51 and deforms to form a tight seal with this edge. This construction eliminates the need for a coating of the interior portion of the flange 52.
Likewise, the flange skirt carries a coarser and less steep thread which provides better exterior coverage in the coating process. The rest of the flange cooperates with the neck of the opening as described above. The variant of FIG. 14 has a seal 55 cast in the annular groove of the part 51 and which engages with a reduced lower wall portion 56 of the closure plug so as to form an effective seal between these parts against leaks.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS.
15 and 16, the closure flange 60 is made of synthetic plastic material, for example polyethylene. The shape of the fixing section 61 is the same as in the metal execution, except that the surface 62 is formed on a thicker part.
It is evident from looking at fig. 16 that the design of placing the wall 4 of the container, the surface 62 and the head 63 of the stopper all in a common plane is valid for all embodiments. The fixing section 61 is fixed to the neck 6 by means of a metal sealing ring 64 shown in the extended state in FIG. 5 and crimped in fig. 16. It can be seen in FIG. 15 that the fastener formation 64 has a lip 65 projecting inwardly onto the lower edge of the outer peripheral wall 66. This lip forms a tight seal against the back of the neck 6 when pushed inward by the lip. seal ring 64.
Instead of using a cover cap, this embodiment has a rupturable diaphragm 67 (Fig. 16), disposed across the bottom of the flange and which can be simply pierced and torn to provide access to the contents of the flange. container. The diaphragm 67 is integrally formed with the flange 60 and has an annular weakened portion 68 to facilitate its tearing. A thin elastic grip 69 for a finger is molded integrally with the diaphragm and has an enlarged portion 70 to aid in its grip. We can see in fig. 16 that the plug 69 is elastically pushed down by the bottom surface of the closure cap 71 when the latter is screwed into the flange.
The closure plug 71 has a threaded side wall 72 which terminates in a bottom surface 73. This surface 73 may form a seal with an annular portion 74 exterior to the weakened portion 68 and which remains in the flange after the diaphragm has closed. been removed, eliminating the need for a gasket for the plug.
In the variant of FIG. 18, a weakened portion 75 is disposed at the outer periphery of the diaphragm, requiring the presence of a seal 76 for the stopper in order to seal the opening after the diaphragm has been destroyed. This construction has the advantage of offering a larger opening through which the contents of the container can be dispensed.
The closure device shown in FIGS. 19 and 20 is similar to that of FIG. 15 in that the flange is of plastic material, but instead of presenting a diaphragm intended to be broken across the dispensing opening, it comprises a removable pouring neck 76. In fig. 19, the neck is shown in the lowered position in which it is prevented from falling into the container by means of a lip 77 projecting outwardly at its upper end and cooperating with an annular cheek 78 having a part 79 turned towards the bottom. top, one-piece with the bottom end of the flange skirt.
The neck 76 is shown in the raised or pouring position in FIG. 20 in which it is held rigidly by the cooperation of an annular rim 80 at the lower end of the neck with the part 79 of the neck. The rim 80 comprises two ribs 81 and 82 which define with a cylindrical surface 83 of larger diameter than the rest of the neck a groove which can fit over the part 79 at the base inner periphery of the flange to form a tight seal. . here also, as in the device of FIG.
15, a closure plug 84 comprises a threaded side wall 85 terminating its lower part with a reduced part 86 which engages the upper surface of the annular cheek 78, so as to form a tight seal therewith. The use of a gasket 87 for the stopper is optional in this construction.
In this embodiment, the closure device cannot be fractured by virtue of a light capsale 88 (fig. 21) preferably made of plastic material and comprising a flat upper part 89, a side wall 90 and an annular part 91 projecting. radially outwardly and extending from the edge of the wall 90. This capsule is arranged to cover the closure cap, the part 91 being held tightly clamped between the end edge 92 facing inwardly. an n sealing ring 93 and an annular surface 94 of the flange.
This has, as in the previous embodiments, an annular surface 95 extending inwardly from the fixing section and a skirt 96 receiving the plug 84 and extending laterally from said annular surface, at the inner periphery of it.
In fig. 20, the capsule 88 is shown partially torn to allow access to the closure cap which can then be removed, the neck being able to be lifted into its pouring position.
