A. Généralités

A. General
In this kind of carburetor, used mainly on motorcycles, it can be observed that, for the different positions of the barrel for which the needle jet works, the richness of the mixture varies according to the load imposed on the needle. motor and this in an unfavorable direction.
If a correct adjustment of the position of the needle is made to operate in level for example, the reduction in speed due to an increase in the load results in a depletion of the mixture, which itself results in heating. of the engine more consequent than that which would be justiciable of the increase of work requested.
The reverse is also true, if the needle position of a carburetor of this kind is adjusted to obtain optimum side results; in stages, the mixture will become too rich and consumption, exaggerated
The purpose of the device described and claimed below is to remedy this state of affairs automatically.
Its main merit is, on the one hand, to allow, for a route of varied profile, to slightly lower fuel consumption and, on the other hand, and especially when an effort is required. to the motor, to allow the latter to perform it with much more ease and at the cost of much less heating, since the mixture remains correct and does not become poor in these new conditions. - operating conditions.
B. - Principle of the claimed device
Automatically and in a favorable direction vary the relative position of the needle and the needle nozzle as a function of the vacuum existing at the needle nozzle. This possibility of relative movement being automatic and true for all the positions of the valve.
This result can be obtained in two different ways: 1 either that the automatic control system modifies the position of the needle relative to the plug 2 or that the system moves the needle jet relative to the body of the carburetor.
C. Means of carrying out the principle claimed in B
1 - The needle, instead of being integral with the plug, is connected to it by means of a movable or deformable part, responding to the variations of the depression which exists at the level of the needle nozzle.
This movable or deformable part can be either a piston located inside the plug, or a metallic bellows (Bellow) or any other suitable material, or a membrane or any other deformable device.
The possible vibrations of one or the other system will be damped either by a mass, or by an air or oil damping system, or by the combination of these means.
2 - The needle jet can be connected to the body of the carburettor by one of the means above, the needle in this case keeping its normal assembly in the bushel.
The end result of the two methods is to vary the relative position of the needle and its nozzle according to the principle claimed in B.

D. Example of realization of the principle claimed in B by one of the means set out in C.
Figure A shows the part of a needle carburetor for a motorcycle which is the object of the present invention. In this example, the claimed system is completely included in the plug 2. It mainly consists of a metal bellows 3 which is the deformable element. This bellows is closed at its upper part by a part 4 which extends inside, is pierced with a blind hole to receive the needle and is provided with a pin spring to lock it in the chosen position. . Figure B shows the detail of this part.
This part 4 in figure A dampens on the one hand by its mass the vibrations which might want to be initiated and, on the other hand, reduces the volume of air inside the bellows. The lower part of the bellows 3 is welded to a thin-walled tube 14. The lower end of this tube is pushed back in such a way that it allows easy welding to the lower end of the bellows. The upper end is welded to the plug 5 of the plug. This stopper is screwed onto the head of the plug and blocked by the screw 6 moving a slice of the thread determined by two saw cuts. This plug has in its center the fixing of the cable 7, as well as a socket for the return spring 8.
At 11, a hole is seen which allows atmospheric pressure to establish itself in the space located outside the bellows.
The interior space of the bellows has its pressure balanced with that prevailing in the vicinity of the needle nozzle by the annular air passage determined by the diameter of the cylindrical part of the needle and that of the bore provided for its passage through the lower part of the bushel. This passage is indicated at 15 This bore could also be constituted by a part screwed from the inside of the plug. The section of this annular opening is very large; it prevents the sudden transmission of pulses inside the bellows and, combined with the mass of the part 4, it allows a perfect response of the moving assembly.
This annular passage fulfills in this example the role of calibrated orifice E. - Explanation of the operation of the embodiment described above
We see that if the engine speed is limited by the position of the plug, this implies a strong depression at its level which, being transmitted through the annular passage inside the bellows, will result in a descent of the needle. avoiding an enrichment of the mixture.
If, on the other hand, the speed of the engine is conditioned by the load imposed on it, the vacuum is in this case lower and the needle assumes a new higher position, which prevents the mixture from becoming lean.
Experience has shown that the total stroke of the mobile system can be two notches of the needle of a normal carburetor.
It is obvious that for small carburettors the moving part can be of a larger diameter than the plug itself; in this case, it will have the form shown schematically in figure C.
