<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

JUNCTION BOX FOR CABLE AND INTRODUCTION SLEEVE FOR SUCH BOX.
The present invention relates to a connection boot for a cable, equipped with an introduction sleeve for relieving the core or cores of the cable, from tensile stresses.
When connecting an electric cable to an electrical device, it is often observed that the lead casing of the cable does not fit into the introduction sleeve, in order to relieve the core of the cable from tensile stresses. If the opening in the sleeve is too small, it can be made larger, if the necessary tools are available. In most cases, however, this tooling is not available on site, as the diameter of the lead casing is large compared to the drilling or milling tool that a fitter can normally carry. If the opening in the sleeve is too large, the gap between the sleeve and the lead jacket of the cable must be filled, before the cable jacket can be soldered to the sleeve. This results in a faulty assembly.
The object of the invention is a connection boot with an introduction sleeve, thanks to which the difficulties, which have been experienced until now during the connection of cables, more particularly during the soldering of the lead casing to the aforementioned sleeve, are avoided. According to the invention, the bore of the sleeve affects, at least at one end, the shape of a truncated cone or of a sort of truncated cone, the diameter of which decreases in stages. The purpose of this form is to allow the fitter to saw, using a hacksaw, part of the sleeve, and thus obtain a larger opening to provide passage for the cable.
If the introduction sleeves have an opening suitable for the cable whose casing has the smallest diameter encountered in practice, these sleeves can, within certain limits, be adapted for any other cable, in a simple manner. and with the aid of a tool, namely a saw, which the fitter can easily bring on site.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
So that the fitter knows where he must saw the introduction sleeve, for a given cable diameter, this sleeve may have at the end or at each end provided with a frustoconical or quasi-frustoconical bore (that is, that is to say of decreasing diameter in stages), peripheral grooves. These peripheral grooves may bear an indication, giving the internal diameter of the bore.
The invention also extends to the introduction sleeve, the bore of which affects, at least at one end, the shape of a truncated cone or of a sort of truncated cone whose diameter decreases in stages. .
The invention also relates to the method of mounting an electric cable, according to which the method is sawn, at one end or at both ends of the introduction sleeve, a part such as the opening present at this end or at these ends. of the sleeve has a diameter corresponding exactly or substantially to the outer diameter of the casing of the cable to be mounted.
The accompanying drawings will serve to elucidate the invention. In these drawings: - Figure 1 is a sectional view of a cable connection box with an introduction sleeve according to the invention; - Figure 2 is a front view of the box according to Figure 1, after removal of the cover; - Figure 3 is, on a larger scale, a section of an introduction sleeve for a connection box according to Figures 1 and 2; - Figure 4 is an elevational view of one of the ends of the. sleeve according to Figure 3, and - Figure 5 shows, in section, the end of an introduction sleeve of somewhat different shape.
In Figures 1 and 2, the reference notation 1 designates an electrical device equipped with current supply terminals 2. On the device 1 is mounted a connection box 3, in which the terminals 2 extend.
This boot is provided at the front with a removable cover 4. In the lower part of the cable connection boot is mounted an introduction sleeve 5, in which the cable 6, of which the lead casing 7 is stripped. , is introduced. The conductors 8 of the cable are attached to the terminals 2 of the device 1. The lead casing 7 is soldered to the sleeve 5, in order to discharge the conductors or cores 8 of the cable, from tensile stresses.
The sleeve illustrated in Figure 3 has a cylindrical bore, to which are connected at both ends, tapered bores. The wall thickness of the sleeve is substantially the same everywhere, except at the location of the flange 9. The openings 10 are chosen so that the lead casing, which has the smallest diameter encountered in practice adapts to it. The diameter of the cylindrical part of the sleeve 5 is greater than the outer diameter of the casing 7 of the largest cable with which the connection boot can be used.
It is clear that, when a cable must be introduced into the connection box, the lead casing of which has a diameter greater than that of the openings 10, it suffices to saw off a part or a piece of the ends of the sleeve, to enlarge. these openings and make them correspond in dimension to that of the envelope of the cable in question.
In order to facilitate the determination of the place where the sleeve is to be sawn, there is provided, as shown in Figure 4, at the periphery of the frustoconical ends of the sleeve, at determined distances, peripheral grooves 11, which correspond, for example, at current cable sizes.
It is not necessary for the ends of the sleeve to have a tapered bore or passage. It is also possible, as shown in FIG. 5, to provide in one and / or the other end of the introduction sleeve 12 a

bore, the diameter of which decreases, in stages, towards the end of the sleeve.
