<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
(fig. lE)
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DEVICE APPLICABLE TO LOG SAWS AND OTHER MACHINERY FOR MAINTAINING
IN PLACE THE PART TO BE TREATED.
The present invention relates to a device applicable to log saws or other machines of the same kind and aims to provide simple and effective means by which the workpiece can be held in place.
This device is characterized essentially in that two claw-holder blocks are provided which are brought together or separated by the rotation of a single screw in one direction or the other.
One of the nail holders is mounted and works like a nut on the screw, and the screw ends down in a smooth part on which the second nail holder rotates freely.
In the practical embodiment of the invention, the screw extends above the slides or other guide members so as to allow it to be controlled by any suitable means.
Various important characteristics of the control mechanism will be specified below and a detailed embodiment example will be given without limitation, referring to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view and partially in vertical section.
Figures 1A and 1B are schematic views illustrating the operation.
Figure 2 is a section through the line II-II in Figure 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
FIGS. 3 and 4 are views in vertical section and in horizontal section relating to a variant of the control device.
FIG. 5 relates to another variant of the control device.
The device which is the subject of the invention essentially comprises a screw 1 mounted in a vertical position and provided with a nut 2 which can move over the entire length of the thread.
The screw 1 ends at the bottom with a smooth part 3 on which a second claw holder 4 rotates freely, held between two ball bearings 5 which are retained on each side by a shoulder 6.
The two claw holders are brought together and separated by the movement of the screw in both directions to the right and to the left. They both slide in guides 7.
The screw 1 extends above the slides 7 so as to allow it to be controlled by any suitable means.
As will easily be understood, when the screw 1 begins to be rotated it determines the movement of the upper claw holder 2 which descends like a nut until it comes into contact with the shaft or other part A (Fig. lA).
From this moment, the screw, while continuing its rotational movement, moves upwards, bringing with it the lower punch holder 4. (fig. LE)
The screw can be driven by a simple handwheel, but a gear drive (fig. 1) or pulley (fig. 5) can also be used.
If the part to be fixed has dimensions such as in the clamping position, the distance between the screws will be important and if the drive must be done by the direct control of a motor or a gear, the pulley or gear giving the command must have a hub
8 as shown at 8 in the figure relating to a control comprising a conical toothed wheel 9 which is integral with the hub 8 and engaged with a bevel wheel 10 wedged on a control shaft 11.
The hub 8 must in this case have several shims (not shown) engaging in the grooves of the screw, one of which is shown in
12 so that the gear or pulley can be held between two shoulders 13 forming part of a box 13.
The clawing of the wood caught between the claws 14 is done easily since it is obtained by the movement of the screw and that the screw stops fully.
Unhooking is more difficult since the hook of the claw is held firmly in the wood and therefore the first release movement requires a large driving force.
To remedy this difficulty, we must provide a means by which the screw is at the start of the release driven by shock.
To this end, the control may include a double hub as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
A first hub 8 is provided with wedges 15 (FIG. 3) for driving the screw and further carries a tenon 16 which extends over approximately 1/3 of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
hub periphery 8.
Concentrically to the hub 8 is provided a second hub 17 which has an internal tenon 18 and which is integral with the control gear 9.
As can be seen more specifically in FIG. 4, the hub 17 can make approximately 2/3 of a turn before driving the hub 8, which considerably facilitates the driving of the screw 1.
Another way is to leave a gap of one or two cm. between the two shoulders of the ball bearings 5 so that the screw can be set in motion before removing the two claw blocks.
As shown in Figure 5 relating to a control of the screw 1 by pulley 20, it is possible, in order to avoid abnormal wear of the grooves receiving the shims and also of the shims themselves to provide on each side of the pulley a spring 21 capable of being compressed by about 15 mm so that when the hooks of the two blocks 2 and 4 have been brought together without undergoing any force from the part to be clamped and up to it, one or the other spring may collapse while allowing the pulley to move slightly. The tips of the hooks will therefore penetrate at different depths into the wood.
At the moment beyond rotation in the opposite direction to release the hooks, the springs 21 will relax upwards or downwards and the wedges will slide in their grooves without the slightest effort, avoiding the jamming of the wedges in the grooves.
When trees have a small diameter it is unnecessary to raise the upper claw to heights corresponding to that of larger trees.
The slides can then have holes in which pins can be inserted which will be located above the upper claw block.
When loosening, the upper hook meets the pivot during its ascent and will be stopped which will force the lower hook to descend. The part will thus be released more quickly from the two hooks.
