<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

DEVICE FOR ACTUATING CYLINDERS OR GROUPS OF CYLINDERS WITH
VARIABLE, DIFFERENTIAL SPEEDS.
Cylinders or groups of cylinders serving for the advancement of materials or for the working thereof, these materials thus being subjected to elongation or to narrowing in the longitudinal direction. must for a flawless job. be actuated at an adjustable speed according to the differences existing between the numbers of revolutions of the various stages of the treatment, the adjustment preferably taking place without intermediate stages or stages.
The present invention relates to a device for actuating such cylinders or groups of cylinders with variable, differential speeds, from a common main shaft, and meeting the conditions mentioned above.
The device according to the present invention differs from the embodiments known hitherto mainly in that the main motor shaft is positively coupled with the cylinders or groups of cylinders by means of a differential. and in addition with a device. preferably hydraulic. adjustable without steps or intermediate stages, which in turn is connected with the differential and gives it an additional rotational movement. Preferably, the wheels of the differential have a number of teeth such that during a fairly large variation in the additional rotation produced by the device without intermediate stages or stages, a relatively small change in the number of revolutions of the differential is obtained.
According to the present invention, the differential consists of two rotating wheel devices, the drive wheel of which receives its actuation both from the main drive shaft and from the driven device. adjustable without steps or intermediate stages. and is coupled to the

Sitif driven by the intermediary connecting the two toothed wheels of the two rotating wheel devices, this shaft being mounted on a bearing which is rigidly fixed to the rotating bearing of the shaft of the toothed wheel drive device.
The main drive shaft further has a toothed wheel which engages a ring gear placed externally on the periphery of the outer central wheel of the drive toothed wheel device. the internal toothed ring being positively connected by means of the rotating toothed wheel with the internal central wheel, which is mounted on a shaft additionally actuated by the adjustable device without intermediate stages or bearings.
The use of differentials to achieve positive or negative differences in the number of revolutions is known in science. It is also not new to use hydraulic devices for progressive gear changes without stages or intermediate bearings.
In both cases however. it is not possible: a) to establish a variable ratio of the number of revolutions between the main motor shaft and the individual cylinders or groups of cylinders; b) obtain wide adjustment limits with a small difference in the number of revolutions between the main motor shaft and the cylinders or groups of cylinders. allowing a delicate adjustment, without stages or intermediate stages. the difference in the number of revolutions, and c) to ensure a sufficient constancy of the ratio of the number of revolutions between the main driving shaft and the cylinders or groups of cylinders in the event that there is a change in the number of revolutions of the engine. main motor shaft.
These advantages are obtained by the device according to the present invention, which can be used anywhere, during. continuous working of the material.!} a differential speed is needed between the various phases of the work, such as for example in the manufacture of cellulosic strips or in the rolling of steel .. etc. As a result of the combination of differential devices and adjustable devices without intermediate stages. such as oil devices. a very fine variation, without Intermediate stages, of the difference in the number of revolutions between the cylinders or groups of cylinders is made possible.
Moreover, by the special conformation and thanks to the appropriate dimensions given to the differential device, the errors produced by the non-linearity of the oil device during variations of the main speed are made negligible.
More precise details and other characteristics of the invention will emerge from the description which follows with reference to the exemplary embodiments shown schematically in the accompanying drawings.
Referring to these drawings, the main motor shaft 1 from which the various cylinders or groups of cylinders W of the whole plant receive their movement., Actuates the outer central wheel 4 by means of a pinion 2. This outer central wheel 4 has at its outer periphery a ring gear 5, which engages with the pinion 2. The movement is transmitted from the inner ring gear 6 of the outer central toothed wheel 4 via the toothed wheel 7 to the internal toothed wheel '$ which is mounted on the shaft 9 of the drive wheel device.
This shaft 9 also receives an additional rotational movement via a chain wheel 10, the chain 11 of this wheel 10 leading to an adjustment device 12 without intermediate stages and actuated by means of a wheel. chain 13 mounted on the main shaft 1 and having a chain 14.
In the same axial direction as the wheel-driven device 5-8. is the driven device which consists of a central wheel ex-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
15 and a toothed wheel 16. The internal central wheel does not exist in this device. The toothed wheel 16 is connected with the toothed wheel 7 ′ of the motor device via a shaft 17 mounted for rotation in a bearing 18, rigidly connected via an arm 19 with a bearing 20 rotating on it. shaft 9 of the motor device. The shaft 21 of the driven device 15, 16 carries a toothed wheel 22 which comes into engagement with a toothed wheel 24 mounted on the shaft 23.
On the shaft 23 are mounted several bevel gears 25 which actuate the cylinders W through the bevel gears 26.
In this embodiment, therefore, from the main shaft 1, via the adjustment device without intermediate stages and by the wheel drive device, an additional movement to the wheel driven device is transmitted, this movement then being transmitted to the cylinders W which receive their main movement from the main motor shaft 1 via the toothed wheel 2 and the outer central wheel 4 in combination with the two wheels, 7,16 and the outer central wheel 15 of the driven device.
The number of teeth of the wheels of the differential D formed by the two wheel devices are chosen such that a relatively large variation in the number of revolutions of the device 12 adjustable without intermediate stages will have only a relatively small influence on the number. of revolutions of the W cylinders, so that the extended limits of adjustment of the device 12 without intermediate stages will allow a very precise definition of the ratio between the numbers of revolutions of the main shaft 1 and of the W cylinders. the transmission ratios are adjustable in such a way that both a positive effect and a negative effect of the number of revolutions of the cylinders relative to the main shaft 1 can be achieved.
in order to take into account not only the elongation but also the shrinkage of the material between the various stages of the treatment. The strongly attenuated influence mentioned above of the stepless device 12 on the number of revolutions of the cylinders W also has this advantage that when changing the number of revolutions of the main shaft 1, the error in the number of cylinder revolutions W caused by the well-known non-linearity of the oil device employed as a device without intermediate stages, is made negligible.
