DISPOSITIF DE FIXATION ET DE-TENSION POUR TOILE MONTEE SUR ENCADREMENT
RIGIDE POLYGONAL.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
REVENDICATIONS.

FIXING AND TENSIONING DEVICE FOR CANVAS MOUNTED ON FRAMES
RIGID POLYGONAL.
For ease of explanation, we will generally call "canvas" any flat material that can be stretched (fabrics, sheets., Silk sieve., Bronze, plastic., Etc.), and "frame". the frame on which the "canvas" is stretched.
Usually a single or double frame frame, of rigid or semi-rigid material is used to stretch a canvas whose two faces must be uncovered and whose l'ume @ must be cleared to the outer limits of the frame.
The ends of the canvas are attached to the sides of the frame by a greater or lesser number of contiguous or isolated attachment points (and generally consisting of some system of nails, screws, staples, glue, locking or pinching slats) .
The initial tension of the canvas can be modified by an appropriate deformation of the frame to which it is attached.
This deformation is obtained, for example, in the case of a single-frame frame., By the operation of the pegs joining the sides, or again, by the insertion between the sides of the frame and the canvas, of a inflatable air chamber.
In double-frame frames., The deformation of one of the frames to which the canvas is attached is obtained by mechanical traction or pressure bearing on the other and acting in the plane of the frame. Apart from the drawbacks due to the bulk and the deformations they cause, these systems cannot ensure a uniform tension of the fabric.
In fact the edges of the canvas, retained at their sides
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
pective by fixed attachment points, cannot extend parallel to them.
Therefore, during the tensioning maneuver, it inevitably occurs distortions of the fabric which can be defined as follows:
1) The effect of the voltage parallel to one side decreases to become almost zero as it gets closer to that side.
2) The effect of the voltage parallel to the base of an imaginary triangle whose vertex is one. corner of the frame., will get stronger and stronger the closer it gets to this top.
In fact, whatever its elasticity, the canvas should irreparably tear at the corners, during the tensioning maneuver, if care was not taken to interrupt the fixing points near these treatments.
The present invention relates to a novel fixing and tensioning device for a canvas mounted on a rigid polygonal frame, which is characterized by the following points, taken in combination or separately:
1) The edges of the canvas are no longer fixed to the frame by a greater or lesser number of attachment points.
2) The edges of the fabric are provided with a bead, formed by the introduction into a hem of a slippery or elastic thickness.
3) This bead is retained beyond a slot on the periphery of the frame.
4) This slit can be obtained by bringing two pieces together.
5) The width of this slit is constant and calculated in such a way that the bead, which is thicker, cannot pass through it, but that the canvas, which is thinner, can slide.
6) The part containing the slot ,, or forming one of the sides of the slot., Is movable and maneuverable perpendicular to the plane of the slot.
7) The tension of the fabric takes place., In a plane substantially perpendicular to the surface to be stretched, by a traction exerted on the bead by the member which retains it.
8 During the tension maneuver, each of the edges of the fabric being able to extend into and beyond the slit., Regularly follows the movement imparted to the fabric by the parallel tension.
The present invention also relates to a canvas tensioning frame using one of the systems described above.
We now write, with reference to the accompanying drawing, a chassis apparatus particularly suitable for the application of the device of the invention.
The drawing, given by way of example, shows one side of the frame seen in section.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This chassis comprises a main frame of rigid material; in the case of the example, it is a U-shaped metal profile (1), the opening of which is in the plane of the fabric to be stretched and one of the sides of which, longer than the other, is folded towards the inside of the frame.
A secondary frame in rigid or semi-rigid slats (2), assembled in its flattest position, is of such dimensions that it can fit exactly into the opening of the U-profile, in which thanks to a small clearance , it can move in a direction perpendicular to the surface to be stretched.
The main frame and the secondary frame are drilled, at points distributed around their periphery, with holes facing each other, in which are introduced the clamping bolts (6) whose head rests on the main frame .
A nut (7), placed on the outside of the secondary frame, retains the latter inside the main frame and can force it to sink into it.
The fabric to be stretched (3), cut to the format of the frame, is finished., On all its sides, by a hem (4) in which is introduced a sliding or elastic layer (5).
The placement and tension of the canvas are carried out as follows:
The beaded edges of the canvas are arranged in the main frame, along its inner side. We then place the secondary frame in the main frame, and when the first. starting to press on the bead, offers resistance, the driving movement is extended by means of the nuts, which, once the desired position has been reached, will prevent the backward movement of the secondary frame.
It is by this maneuver of pressure on the bead, exerted simultaneously or not on all sides, that the tension of the fabric takes place.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described and shown. Thus, for example, the profile of the two frames can have any other useful shape; the tightening bolts instead of being fixed, can be mobile and act directly on the secondary frame whose holes will be tapped; clamping screws., bolts, nuts, can moreover be replaced by any other means' of pressure or mechanical traction acting on the bead in a direction perpendicular to the surface to be tensioned.
