<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

TUBE LADDERS.
The present invention relates to ladders made of metal tubing, which can be used separately as household ladders or which can be combined with one another to form so-called extension ladders.
In an earlier Belgian patent N 487,532, of February 24, 1949, of the applicant, we have described and shown tube ladders whose uprights are reinforced, against sagging, by a tensioner or stiffener consisting of a tube fixed, by its ends, to the ladder upright and extending parallel to the latter, with the interposition of spacers.
This tensioner assembly, parallel to the upright, can, in certain cases, present drawbacks. Indeed, if the tensioner is only slightly removed from the upright, it cannot act as a knee clamp, when the user is standing on one of the intermediate steps of the ladder, of which the effective knee clamp only exists. from the rest board. On the other hand, if the stiffening tube is placed far enough from the upright to form a support ramp or a knee clamp over the entire height of the ladder, the latter may be too bulky for its storage, or when not being used, it is placed almost vertically against a wall.
These drawbacks are avoided by virtue of the present invention, by the fact that in the construction of ladders which is the subject thereof, the tensioner is made in such a way that in addition to the stability which it confers on the same time, it constitutes at the same time an effective knee clamp from the rungs where the position of the user begins to become critical, this tensioner offering, in this very place of the ladder, a comfortable ramp facilitating the climb on the ladder. here, while reducing to a minimum the size of the ladder at its base.
The invention also relates, for ladders of this type, to a system for fixing an extension, as well as certain types of extension for particular purposes.
Other features of the invention will emerge during

Fis. 11 shows a ladder extension that can be used in. ±., El ':;: "&: 7 ::: 1100 in combination with an attic hatch.

Gem shown in Fridge 1, the ladder is formed of uprights 11 to which 20nt fixed boards 12 forming rungs. To the front uprights 11 evening-articulated rear uprights 13 y, the spacing of the front and rear uprights being limited by a device II +, with automatic hooking, as already known from Belgian patent Na: 887,532 by the applicant.
The characteristic of the scale shown in Fig. 1 resides in the fact that the tensioner or stiffener 15 for each upright 11 is no longer arranged parallel to the latter, but gradually move away from the bottom to the top of the ladder. This particular arrangement of the stiffener 15, the presence of which is essential to ensure the stability of tube ladders of more than four or five rungs, provides the user with not only two comfortable ramps for climbing the ladder, which ramps
EMI2.5
is already at height of the hcmee therefore directly within reach, but constitute sur'uou'u an effective kneeling from the steps or rungs on which the position of the user becomes critical if he abandons the ram-

pe 15.
It is; : note that the knee clamp formed by the ramp 15 offers its effectiveness: .3..uti :. at the most critical point of the ladder, that is to say above the working board 16, the ramp 15 coming, at this point, to join the upright 11 substantially at knee height, to form a support pou; .7 a tablet 17a a lug 17a allowing the attachment of a bucket. It should also be noted that the ramp or stiffener 15 is joined to the upright 11 by one or possibly more spacers such as 18.
In order to be able to extend the scale of FIG. 1 by an extension such as that shown in FIG. 2, or any other extension of suitable construction, the invention provides, as shown in particular in FIGS. 1 and 6,
EMI2.7
that each J..lcITvant 11 of 1-'échelle laterally carries a socket or bucket 19 welded to this amount and into each of which the end 20a of one of the amounts of the extension is inserted.
As shown in Fig. 2, this extension is also formed of

tants 30. Steps or rungs 22 are attached to the uprights 2J and to the stiffener 21.
It is understood that any other type of extension can be used, such as a simple ladder with tubular uprights, whether or not provided with stiffeners 21, the steps 22 being able to be fixed to both the uprights.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
20 and their stiffener 21, or only the uprights 20.
In the example shown in FIG. 2, the extension 20 is designed particularly but not exclusively to allow easy access into a hatch attic. To this end, the uprights 20 of the extension end in a horizontal portion 20b, which, as shown in FIG. 3, comes to rest on the floor 23 of the attic. In this special type of attic extension, the two stiffening tubes join the horizontal tubes 20b after having described a loop 24 forming a guardrail for access into the attic. Spacers such as 25 and 26 in particular ensure the rigidity of this extension head, while a spacer 27 unites the stiffeners
21 to amounts 20.
Considering FIG. 2, we note that the extension does not have a rung at its base. In fact, when this extension is adapted to its supporting ladder, as shown in Fig. 3, it is the board 17 of the carrying ladder 11, which constitutes the first step of the extension. It goes without saying, however, that the extension 20 may itself be provided with a base rung forming an intermediate step.
Gem, it is also important not to interrupt the continuity of the steps between the work board 16 and the board 17, normally used for placing objects, the supporting ladder
11 is provided with an auxiliary rung 28, established in the form of a folding board, so as not to interfere with the user when the latter only uses the base ladder 11 without an extension.
This folding planchette device is shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 5, in which it can be seen that the folding step 28 is fixed, on each side, on an angle bar 29, articulated at 30 to a cross member 31 joining the reinforcement 15 and the upright 11. As shown in particular in FIG. 6, the wing of the angle iron 29, in contact with the board 28, is provided with a lateral projection 32, to form a stop resting in a notch 33, provided on the upper edge of the cross member 31, when the board 28 is folded down to form an intermediate rung.
The stops 32 also serve to retain the board 28 against the uprights 11, in its raised position, when it is not used as an intermediate rung. Any locking means, elastic or not, can be provided to secure the board 28 in its raised position when not in use.
The invention also provides that a scale such as that shown for example in FIG. l, may present instead of the folding board 28, a board 34, which is this time foldable towards the rear of the ladder to form a bucket holder. As shown in Figs.
7 and 8, the board 34 will also be carried by angles 35 articulated at 30 to the cross member 31, the folding of the board 34 taking place in the direction indicated by the arrow x, to come to occupy the position shown in FIG.
8. To this end, the angles 35 will be provided with a stop 37 presented by their vertical, this stop being applied in a notch 38 presented by the lower edge of the cross member 31, so as to retain the board 34 in a horizontal plane, when it is folded down.
According to Figs. 2 and 3, the extension ends with a guardrail.
However, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, this extension may end with simple arms 39 preferably formed by an extension of the stiffeners 21 beyond their point of meeting with the uprights 20. As shown in FIG. 9, these arms 39 can serve as a means for hooking the extension onto the floor of the attic 23, or else, as shown in FIG. 10, as supports on a vertical surface such as a wall 40. It is obvious that these arms 39 could just as well be formed by an appropriate curvature given at the upper end of the uprights 20 in the event that these uprights do not include stiffener 21.
An extension such as that shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which finds its particular application for access to attics, could

It should be noted that the raising of the extension has the effect of moving the center of gravity of the tilting assembly formed by this extension and the. hatch, so that the head and most of the extension form at this time a counterweight to facilitate the raising of the hatch.
Considering the position, shown in phantom lines, occupied by the extension after closing the hatch, it will be understood that this assembly makes it possible to use an extension of sufficient length to be able to adapt it to a basic ladder of average height and ensure storage of the extension

On the contrary, when the ladder is loaded, the power of the springs 59 is no longer sufficient to withstand the load applied to the uprights II and 13, which then come to rest firmly on the ground by moving the rollers away. 55, 56b which become inoperative. The cap 57 of the caster 55 extends beyond the caster to form a stop or grip on the ground 60, when the ladder is folded up and resting against a wall.
