<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

UNIVERSAL MECHANICS WITH MULTIPLE POSITIONS FOR Looms.
We know that double shuttle looms, or looms, weaving cut looped articles, or comprising loops of different heights obtained with a rod lance on each side, require the use of mechanics carrying out on the same pitch, several floors crowd, between which pass the shuttle and the yards.
These mechanics generally include hooks with two braiches; these branches can be lifted to different heights by means of two knife holders.
The present invention relates to a simpler mechanism comprising the usual members and actuated by a single cylinder.
This result is obtained by adding the movements of two hooks, by means of a hoist collar, two embodiments of which are given below without limitation. The first gives hole positions with elevation of a shed by the movement of the movable snare board; the second gives four positions with elevation of a shed, if necessary, by the movement of the movable snare board.
For either embodiment, the movement of the hooks is provided by a single knife-holder carriage and a single cylinder.
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 relate to the first embodiment - Figures 3, 4 and 5 relate to the second embodiment.
Referring to Figure 1 relating to the first embodiment, we see that two consecutive hooks - 1 and 2 - of a group, are connected by a rope 3 passing under the upper pulley 8 of a double hoist 4. A second rope 5 fixed by means of a knot to a fixed plank 6, passes over the lower pulley 9 of the hoist 4 and crosses the plank

fixed to be attached at 7 to wire 10 of the harness.
Hooks such as 1 and 2 are actuated individually by needles following the known process. They can be lifted by the carriage 12 when they are not pushed back by their needle. These hooks, left at rest, can also be lifted by an overall movement of the movable collet board 11.
If the carriage 12 rises to a certain height, 10 cms for example, three cases may arise (Figure 1):
1 neither of the two hooks 1 or 2 is raised, the carabiner 7 remains movable in the low position.
2. only one of the two hooks 1 or 2 is raised. By the play of the hoist 4, the carabiner 7 rises by the same amount as the trolley is 10 cms.
3. The two hooks 1 and 2 are raised; by the same set of hoist 4 the two movements are added together and carabiner 7 rises 20 cms.
We thus obtain three positions on coasts 0 - 10 and 20 giving two crowds.
If the carriage 12 is raised by 15 cms and the collar board 11 by a third of this height, ie 5 cms, the following results are obtained (FIG. 2).
1. Neither hook 1 or 2 is raised. By playing the snare board 11, the carabiner 7 raises 10 cms.
2. Only one of the two hooks 1 or 2 is raised. By adding the movements of this hook and that of the snare board 11, the snap hook 7 rises 20 cms.
3. The two hooks 1 and 2 are lifted. By adding their movements, the carabiner 7 rises 30 cms.
We thus obtain three positions, which by the elevation due to the collar board, give three crowds.
Regarding the second embodiment making it possible to obtain four positions, referring to FIG. 3 of the attached drawing, it can be seen that the movements of the coupled hooks 1 and 2 are added by the hoist collar as follows:
The hook 2 supports by a rope 13 a hoist 14 with a single roller.
A fixed board 15 is arranged under the mechanism and corresponding to each hook 1, it supports by means of a rope 16 a hoist with only one roller 17.
At hook 1, a rope 18 is collared, which passes through the hoist 17, then goes up on the hoist 14 and finally, goes down again, crosses the board 15, and ends with a snap hook 19 to which the harness wire 10 will be attached to the usual way.
The mechanism is provided with a single carriage or knife-holder claw 20, which at each lift, can select the carabiners in four positions depending on whether or not hooks 1 and 2 are lifted by the carriage 20.
Assuming for example that this trolley lifts 10 cms., Four cases can occur which are represented in figure 4. 1st CAS - The hooks 1 and 2 remain at rest, the carabiner 19 occupies the lower position as already defined above (A in the drawing).
2nd CASE.- Hook 1 alone is raised - hoist 14 therefore remains stationary and karabiner 19 is raised by 10 centimeters (B).
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
3rd CASE.- Hook 2 alone is raised, hoist 14 rises 10 cms and carabiner 19 rises 20 cms (C).
.th CASE.- The two hooks 1 and 2 are raised - the hoist 4 rises 10 cms, and the addition of the two movements raises the carabiner 19 by 30 cm (D).
We thus obtain four positions and three strides.
In the example above, we have assumed the collet board 21 stationary.
This is the case of the simple lift mechanism which is particularly suitable for articles allowing the operation of the mechanics at 1/2 loom speed.
The same device can be applied to the lifting and lowering mechanics and to any combination of distinct movements of the knife carriage and the collet board.
A special case is especially suitable for articles requiring the selection of hooks at each pick. It is carried out according to the usual process of lifting and lowering mechanics, but in which the collar board moves in the opposite direction to the carriage, with an amplitude equal to 1/3 of that of the carriage. In the example indicated above, the cart 20 would therefore rise 76 mm and the collar board 21 would descend 33 mm. A similar reasoning leads to the evolution indicated in figures 5 for simple lifting and figure 6 for lifting and lowering, in which the selection S of the hooks is made between each passage of the shuttle, the mechanism being closed at the top of the first shed d 'that is to say in second position.
In this device, the mechanism is actuated by a single command by means of a crank rotating at the speed of the loom.
In the two embodiments described above, the Jacquard mechanism is only actuated by a single cylinder acting on both hooks I and hooks 2.
This mechanism therefore requires only one set of boxes, which gives it great operating safety and simplifies the maneuver for placing the set of boxes as well as the recall.
However, if for convenience of reading or the possible use of the mechanics for other purposes, it was judged preferable to act on the hooks 1 and the hooks 2 by two separate boxes, the clamping arrangements by hoists would remain the same .
In this case, the hooks 1 would be actuated by a cylinder placed at the front of the mechanism, as described above, and by a bed of needles corresponding to these hooks.
The hooks 2 would be turned over and actuated by a second cylinder placed at the rear of the mechanism and by a second needle bed placed below the needle bed of the crobhets 1.
These two cylinders could act either simultaneously or separately depending on the requirements of the articles to be woven.
