PROCEDE.DE FABRICATION DE SACS A PARTIR DE BANDES, SACS FABRIQUES PAR CE FROIDE, ET MACHINE POUR LA MISE EN OEUVRE DE CE PROCEDEo
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
@ Conformément à l'invention, on peut également fabriquer des gous- sets à fond non scellé, en formant un pli symétriquement sur les deux bords et du même côté de la matière en mouvement, la distance entre ces plis étant égale à la largeur du sac terminé;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING BAGS FROM STRIPS, BAGS MANUFACTURED BY THIS COLD, AND MACHINE FOR IMPLEMENTING THIS PROCEDURE
The present invention relates to a process for mechanically manufacturing bags, like tubular bodies and the like, from sheets or webs of a material such as paper, regenerated cellulose, or other like materials; The subject of the invention is also bags and similar tubular bodies manufactured by this process, as well as a machine for carrying out said process.
Several methods and machines are already known for mechanically manufacturing bags with paper and the like; in these methods and machines, the material used intermittently advances through the machine, and is folded back on itself around or in a molding apparatus such as a mandrel. Another known method of making bags using the above-mentioned materials is to pass the used material continuously through a machine and to mold the desired perfect tubular shape by folding the material around it. 'an axis, coinciding with the direction of its passage, so as to make a tube, the longitudinal closing line of which is produced by sealing the two edges on each other in the direction of movement of the material.
This tubular object is then cut transversely with respect to the movement of the material; then the bottom is formed by folding together once or twice the two edges of one of the ends of the tubular body, and the single or double fold thus executed is sealed.
However, these known methods only offer very limited possibilities for making bags of different shapes. Thus, it was heretofore impossible to mechanically manufacture ordinary bags, that is to say bags having an edge folded inwards in the bottom and having a determined shape of the opening; by passing the material continuously through the machine, or bags folded into a gusset
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with a bottom without connecting line. We were therefore obliged to make these bags by hand. The folded bottoms of the bags, which could hitherto be manufactured mechanically, did not present great resistance.
In order to manufacture mechanically, in accordance with the invention, bags or similar tubular bodies from sheets or strips of a material such as paper, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, etc., the form is produced. The perfect tubular shape desired by molding by passing the material longitudinally and continuously through the machine and folding it at least once transversely to the direction of its movement.
By virtue of the present invention, it is possible to mechanically manufacture by a continuous process a very large number of bags or similar tubular articles; The machine according to the invention and thus making it possible to manufacture bags or similar tubular articles is of relatively very simple construction and can be easily modified to suit the manufacture of bags of different designs.
If sheets of a suitable length are used as the starting material, it is not necessary to cut the material into sections, otherwise the material must be adjusted by cutting it transversely to its movement at a time appropriate while performing the process.
To make flat bags with a longitudinal connection line, the material is folded twice transversely with respect to its movement and on the same face, the distance between the two folds being equal to the width of the bag that we want. ultimately get. The two ends of the sheet, which have become adjacent to each other as a result of this folding, are then glued to one another and the longitudinal line of connection of the flat bag is thus formed. The bottom of the bag can be formed by sealing, for example by gluing, the two single walls one on the other, but it is preferred to form a hem folded inwards at the edge of the bottom, and therefore at the edge of the moving material which will become the bottom of the bag.
The surface portions of this hem, which are adjacent to each other after the material has been folded transversely, are sealed to each other to form the bottom. This produces a bag having a smooth and strong bottom, especially when sealing this hem folded inward on the front or rear wall of the bag; such a bag also has the advantage of having a greater depth than a bag whose hem folded inwardly is sealed to both the front wall and the rear wall.
By smooth bottom is meant a bottom not having any protruding part.
It is also possible, according to the present invention, to mechanically fold a hem at the opening of the bag during the movement of the material; can seal this hem on the adjoining part of the material, or cut a tab or flap in the corresponding edge of the material in the case where it is desired to manufacture bags having a tab in their opening.
Bags having a hem folded inward at the edges of their opening are very advantageous. Many articles, for example articless textiles, are currently wrapped in transparent bags, for example of regenerated cellulose, and are thus displayed in stores.
The edges of these bags tear easily, either while wrapping the articles in question, or when they are pushed a large number of times in or out of the bags during presentation to customers. This is why the presence of a reinforced edge in the opening of the bag and in the bottom thereof is of great importance.
This reinforcement can be achieved by forming, for example, a hem along these edgesa
In addition, when a pleated or troussis is formed in the material in motion, that is to say a corrugation with a fold directed downwards, for example in the portion of material corresponding to the upper part of the bags, a bags with a transverse pleat all around its perimeter, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
pleated being folded down in the direction of the bottom. It is easy to close such a bag hermetically by hand by pushing its upper part under this pleated and then folding this upper part flat; it is easy to hand open the bag again closed in this way.
For the purpose of ornamentation, reinforcement, or other purposes, it is also possible, in accordance with the present invention, to apply to the moving material a small strip of a different material or 'a material of another color or for example a cord, transversely to the finished flat bag, during the implementation of the same mechanical process, for example on the edges of the material, and if desired in the hem or hems.
It is thus possible to manufacture flat bags with a tear strip, intended to open the closed bag, such as the strip frequently used in cigarette packs, or even a strip sealed only on the side edges of the bag; oronly on its front face or on its rear face; one can push under this strip the tab or the upper part of the bag to achieve the manual closure of the latter.
@ According to the invention, it is also possible to manufacture gussets with an unsealed base, by forming a fold symmetrically on the two edges and on the same side of the moving material, the distance between these folds being equal to the width of the bag finished;
the material is then folded, possibly in the form of a sheet having the desired length, transversely to its movement, at a certain distance, equal to the height of the finished bag, possibly including its tab, counted from the front end of the moving material, and in such a way that the two parts of each longitudinal fold thus produced transversely are in contact with each other over - * the entire length, then one seals the other the longitudinal bands on the inner edges of the two parts of these longitudinal folds.
Bags with stronger gusseted pleats can be obtained by further folding a hem on each edge and on the same side of the starting material, but on the side opposite to that of the longitudinal pleats; after the material has been folded up transversely with respect to its movement, the two parts thus formed of each hem are vented adjacent to each other and can be sealed together. These hems are preferably sealed to the adjoining portion of material, and the gusseted pleats are sealed on the bottom or part of the bottom of the bag, so as to prevent these pleats, and especially their bottom part, from turning towards the bottom. outside.
Such bags have the advantage of being impervious to powdery materials, because of their one-piece bottom, and the fact that it is easy to apply an uninterrupted and effective strip of glue to the material. in motion, in accordance with the invention; whereby the longitudinal lines of -, - connection in the bellows folds are therefore closed with an effective seal. Another advantage of these bags is the ease of giving their bottom a square, rectangular or even round shape, which is particularly suitable for wrapping objects of the same shape.
Several particular embodiments of the invention, which however have no limiting character, will now be described by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing in which: FIG. 1 diagrammatically represents a machine in accordance with FIG. invention.
Figures 2, 3 and 4 show, in accordance with several different embodiments, the successive treatments of a strip of material which is to be made into a flat bag.
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of the upper part of a bag according to the invention, the longitudinal connection line of which is not yet closed and which has a transverse pleat all around its surface.

FIG. 6 represents in vertical section the portion of the bag of FIG. 5, the bag still being open but the longitudinal connection line now being closed.
Figure 7 shows in vertical section the portion of the bag 'of Figure 6, its upper part being folded down, then pushed under the pleated and finally folded flat.
Figure 8 shows a gusset according to the invention, with hems sealed in the interior portions of the gusseted pleats.
In FIG. 1, the material coming from the feed roller 1 and passing over the guide rollers 2 and 2 passes through the glue rollers 4a and 4b. These glue rollers 4a and 4b are supplied with glue by the roller 1 from the container 22 and have only a small width. They apply small strips of glue to the two long edges of the moving material. One of these adhesive strips can be uninterrupted as seen in Figure 3, while the other strip can be interrupted so as to obtain a flat bag whose bottom has a hem folded inward; in such a bag the hem is glued to the adjacent wall only on the front or rear face of the bag. The bottom of this bag is therefore very resistant.
In this case, the hem of the opening is glued to the adjacent front wall as well as to the adjacent rear wall.
It is obvious that by modifying these glue rollers it is possible to manufacture other models of flat bags, for example a bag with the hem of the opening and that of the edge of the bottom glued on both sides to the adjacent wall. , a bag with the hem of the opening not glued to the wall, etc.
At 24, the hems are folded over on one edge or on both edges of the material moving in the longitudinal direction. This folding is known per se and has therefore not been described here in more detail. It is also possible to cut tabs or flaps in one of the edges of the moving material, in order to obtain flat bags comprising a folding in their opening. This case is shown in FIG. 2, where the cutting of the flaps corresponds to the work of the roller of FIG. 1, which roller is then a cutting roller.
It is also possible to apply a strip of another material, or of a material of a different color, or even a bead, on the moving raw material, for example at 24.
After folding the hem or hems and gluing them to the adjacent portion of material, if the adhesive strips are applied by the gluing rollers 4a and 4b, the raw material passes over the guide roller 25, then between the glue roller 6 and the push roller 7. Thanks to this glue roller 6 which is also fed by the roller 5, the adhesive strip, intended to seal the bottom of the final flat bag, is only applied on one edge matter, the one who crosses this roll.
This strip of glue is applied in an interrupted manner over a length equal only to the width of the bottom of the bag to be manufactured. Rollers 8 and 2. are take-off rollers and roll 10 is a guide roll; they are preferably constructed so as not to touch the glue strip. This strip of adhesive applied by the roller 6 is naturally eliminated if it is desired to manufacture only tubular bodies which do not have a strip of adhesive at one of their ends.
After passing between these rollers, the material is cut to the desired length by the upper rotating knife 11 and the lower fixed knife 12 of; preferably by an action similar to that of scissors and by means of a special but known device; this device comprises elliptical toothed wheels or similar drive means for controlling the variable speed of the upper knife as a function, for example, of the position of the knives. Arrangements must be made to ensure that the material reaches these knives correctly, in particular by guiding it immediately before them.
The separated scraps thus obtained are di-

rigées by the guide means 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d, and 14 to the means for gluing and folding the rollers 26, 27 and 28 rotating in the directions indicated by the arrows.
These rollers 26, 27 and 28 pull the sheets of material out of the space between the guide means 13a, 13b,
13c, 13d and He ±. During the passage of the first part of each sheet between the rollers 26 and 27, a strip of glue 30 is applied to this part, transversely to the direction of its movement, by means of the glue border. 16 of the roller 26 this border being guided in a radial direction, if necessary. This gluing border 16 receives its glue from a container 23 via the roller 21.
This first part of the sheet finally forms, together with the opposite part or end of the sheet, the longitudinal line of connection of the flat bag to be manufactured. One could obviously coat the end portion of each sheet with a strip of adhesive, instead of the first part thereof.
The folding edge 15 of the roller 26 pushes the material, approximately in the middle of the length of the sheet, during the movement of the material, in the clamping and folding means 17 of the roller 27, this folding edge 15 being guided in a radial direction, if necessary, for example by means of an eccentric axis. As a result of the rotation of the roller 27, the sheet is drawn on the guide means 29 and transferred between the rollers 27 and 28, whereby the bottom connection line is formed by the flat folding of the corresponding edges.
When the sheet thus folded has passed almost completely between the rollers 27 and 28, the protruding edge of the sheet, which with the adjacent edge will form the longitudinal line of connection of the bag, is pushed into the clamping and folding means 19 of the roll 28 by the folding edge 18 of the roll 27, which edge is guided in a radial direction if necessary. At the same time, one moment later, the folded sheet is released from the clamping means 17, that is to say pulled out thereof. As a result of the continuous rotation of the roller 28 the longitudinal connection line of the bag is then closed and terminated. For this purpose, the bag is pushed towards the roller 28 by the edge 31 of the discharge console 20, or else by a push roller.
The thus-completed bags are unloaded from the clamping means 19 at the appropriate time, for example by mechanically opening these clamping means using sliding discs; the bags are then placed on the table 20.
The number of the folding and clamping means, as well as the folding edges and the corresponding means of each roller 26 27, and 28 is conditioned by the size of the bags, measured in the direction of movement of the material, as well as by the size. diameter of these rollers.
It is obvious that the feed of raw material to the cutting and transverse folding means must be controlled and precisely adjusted in order to obtain bags of the correct shape. Various known mechanical devices can be used for this purpose, or preferably photoelectric devices.
It is easy to modify this machine to meet the conditions imposed by other embodiments of the invention.
When it comes to making bags, with an unsealed hem on the adjacent material, either at the bottom or at the edge of the opening, the glue roll 46, or the glue roll Lā, can be omitted, or even these two rollers. If the bottom hem is only sealed to the wall of the bag on one side of the bag, in which case a bag of greater depth is obtained, the glue roll 4b must apply a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
discontinuous strip of glue on the edge of the material and must therefore be constructed in a suitable manner, for example as seen in Figure 1; if the bottom hem is to be sealed to both sides of the bag, the glue roll 4b should have a cross section having an unbroken circular shape.
If it is desired to manufacture bags with a hem at the bottom and / or at the opening, the glue roll ± µ and the glue roll 4a, as well as possibly the folding means 24 or. some of these can be deleted.,
To apply a small strip of another material or of a different colored material, or even a cord, on the path of the material, and therefore transversely on the final flat bag, or longitudinally on the final gusset if one needs desires, at the edges of the opening or 'au. bottom of the flat bag, a roll of the desired material moving parallel to the machine is used, and the latter is fed, for example between the rollers 3.
and the rollers 4a and 4b, if necessary using the glue rollers and 4b or other means for gluing this auxiliary material intermittently or continuously to the main material.
To manufacture flat bags having a flap in their opening, it is possible to form the rollers 7 or 2 or 10 to cut the desired fragments in the edge of the material, for example by making a corrugated cut therein, in which case the parts of the sheets of material, having the corrugations on their adjacent edges, constitute the wall of the bag with the flap, while the neighboring parts form the opposite wall of the final flat bag.
FIG. 2 diagrammatically represents, in a view from above, the successive treatments of the material in the case where it is desired to manufacture bags with a fold-over at the top and a hem at the bottom, this hem being folded inwards. bag and being glued to a single side wall thereof.
In Figure 2, as well as in Figures 3 and 4, the material passes from left to right through the machine. Longitudinal incisions are cut in 7 in the upper edge of the material; the shape of the flap is made in 2 by semi-elliptical cutouts in the edge of the material. A discontinuous strip of glue is applied at 4b on the opposite edge of the material by means of the glue roll 4b of FIG. 1, with a view to gluing the bottom hem on only one side face of the final flat bag. A strip of glue is applied at 6 by the glue roller 6 to seal the bottom.
The web of material is cut at 11 12 transversely to its movement, so as to obtain sheets of a suitable length. The longitudinal fold of the bag is formed at 15, 17. A strip of glue is applied at 30 to provide the longitudinal connecting line of the bag. We see at 18, 19 the not yet closed longitudinal seal of the flat bag, which is otherwise finished and which has a flap at the top; this bag is shown at 20 with a sealed and closed longitudinal u-joint.
Figure 3 shows schematically, in an overhead view, the successive treatments of the material, in the case of; the manufacture of: 'a flat bag comprising a hem at the edge of its opening and m other hem or edge - from the bottom, these hems being folded inwardly of the bag, the hem of the edge of the opening being glued to the two walls of the final bag and the bottom hem being glued to only one side wall of the bag. A continuous strip of glue is applied at 4a on the upper edge of the moving material; edge will ultimately form the edge of the bag opening. The meaning of the other reference numbers is the same as in Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows, in a side view and schematically, the same treatments of the material as in Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows the upper part of a bag, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
longitudinal line of connection 35 not yet being closed, a pleat 36 being disposed transversely all around the surface of the bag and being folded flat on the bottom side. Such a bag can be hermetically sealed and opened several times by hand without damaging the walls. As seen in Figures 6 and 7, the upper portion 37 of the bag is folded down in the direction of the arrow, pushed under the pleat 36 and folded flat. These manual operations allow the bag to be hermetically sealed, which cannot accidentally open. However, it is easy to open it by hand.
This pleating is made in the moving material using suitable devices comprising folding and folding means known per se; these devices are inserted into the machine, for example between the rollers and 1 in FIG. 1.
According to another embodiment of the invention; the two edges of the moving material are prepared to constitute, respectively, the upper edge and the lower edge of the finished flat bag; at an appropriate time, the material is cut into two parts, for example along a wavy line, for the purpose mentioned above. In this way, two flat bags are produced at the same time and the machine's output is therefore doubled. If we prepare the two edges of the raw material to make them top edges, the new edges formed by this cutting of my material are glued to form the bottom of the bags to be made.
If necessary, these new edges can be reinforced by applying a small strip of material over the main material in the part that is to be cut.
FIG. 8 represents a gusset with a bottom 38 without a seal in accordance with the invention. This gusset can be manufactured with the same machine which has just been described, after having made suitable but simple modifications thereto. To manufacture these gussets, longitudinal folds 39 are formed symmetrically in the two edges and on the same face of the moving material, by means of suitable folding and folding means which are inserted for example between the rollers 25. and 7, of Figure 1.
In this embodiment, a hem 40 is first formed on the two edges and on the same face of the moving material but on the face opposite to that of the longitudinal folds; these hemlines can be glued to the neighboring material, in which case the strips of glue are applied by means of the glue rollers 4a and 4b (for the manufacture of the gussets, the glue roller 6 is omitted). Then, the material, the length of which can optionally be adjusted depending on the bag to be manufactured, passes between the rollers 26 and gz of FIG. 1, where it is folded, transversely with respect to its movement, by the folding means 17 and the pushing means 15 of FIG. 1, at a certain distance from the front end of the material equal to the height of the bag, possibly including its flap.
If you want to make bags with a flap at the top, one of the walls 41, shown in Figure 8, is longer than the opposite wall 42,
The starting position of the rollers 26 and 27 must be adjusted, for the supply of material, according to the working conditions, which in this case are those of the manufacture of gussets. These rollers are therefore preferably manufactured so that they can be controlled and adjusted.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 8, the hem portions, along which the hems are divided by the transverse fold-over, are to be glued to each other; for this purpose, corresponding glue rollers are inserted in the machine, for example between rollers 7 and 8 of FIG. 1. If the edges do not have a hem, the longitudinal bands of the two parts, along which the folds longitudinal are divided by the transverse folding, are glued on top of each other. to complete the gusset bellows.
If necessary, the roller 28 with the folding means 19 and the pushing edge of the roller 27 are used to fold the side wall in advance.

along in the form of a flap. It is obvious that the adhesive means of the roller 26 are not used when making gussets with this machine, except in the case where strips of adhesive are applied to the flap of the bag only; for the latter during use.
Other combinations and modifications are still possible within the scope of the present invention.
