GALERIE DE TOITURE EXTENSIBLE ET TELESCOPIQUE A VOLUME VARIABLE NE PRENANT @
APPUI NI SUR LA CARROSSERIE NI SUR LE TOITo

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
moyens traditionnels.

EXTENDABLE AND TELESCOPIC ROOF GALLERY WITH VARIABLE VOLUME NOT TAKING @
SUPPORT NEITHER ON THE BODY OR ON THE ROOF
The aim of this invention is the standardization of a type of roof rack to make it adaptable instantly and without any modification to all cars, whatever the width of the roof and the volume of luggage to be transported.
This standardization of production favors mass production and thereby lowers the cost price in notable proportions.
One of the remarkable points of this invention is the fixing of this gallery, which makes it possible not to make it rest at any point of the roof, which has the advantage of avoiding any damage to the paint and avoiding formation. pits in the roofing sheets, which occurs with the galleries currently in use.
The problem that arose included the following data: How, with a roof rack, of invariable surface, can:
1 - adapt it securely, quickly and without contact with the bodywork, on different shapes and sizes of car roofs? - How to efficiently house and protect a volume of packages which varies essentially according to the strength and capacity of each car considered?
These two difficulties have been overcome in the invention described below, by the use of telescopic sliding tubes, by a system of fixing in the gutters of the car and finally, by the judicious application of the known process of diamonds. deformable.
The single sheet of the accompanying drawings represents:
Fig. I - A perspective view of the entire gallery mounted on the roof of a car.
Fig. 2 - A perspective view of the apparatus for fixing the aux tunnel. gutters.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 3 - A view in elevation of the locking mode of the deformable diamonds s.
It is understood that these drawings are given only by way of example to facilitate the understanding of the explanatory text which will follow, but that they can not, in any case, be considered as restrictive as regards the scope of this. invention or limiting with regard to the form given to the constituent elements or their reciprocal locations with respect to one another.
This device consists essentially of a lower frame and 'an upper frame, connected to each other by articulated and deformable diamonds 24. Between these two frames, a third frame 21, is placed at the end. 'intersection of the deformable diamonds and carries the locking systems 26 of the latter. This third frame is also intended to strengthen the rigidity of the whole. @
The lower frame carries the back of the gallery, this back being able to be solid or skeleton, flat or curved.
On the two upper and lower frames, come to articulate freely the deformable diamonds.
The deformable diamond blocking system consists of a pin 22, mated or welded at 23 on the intermediate frame 21, so that it cannot turn crazy. This stud is partially threaded and passes right through the entire locking system.
Furthermore, each diamond cross, 24, is provided at its intersection with another, with a notched washer 25 made integral with this cross. The two toothed washers being facing each other, adapt to one another and lock when, using any type of tightening 26, the two toothed washers are tightened against each other. 'other.
To obtain a better distribution of the clamping forces, a smooth washer 27 can be added on each side.
The outer end of the stud 28 will be either in the form of a mushroom or provided with a nut permanently fixed, in order to avoid any cutting edge which could either injure the user or cut the cover sheet. . This termination will also prevent the wing nut 26 from slipping off the screw, eliminating a risk of loss.
The apparatus for fixing the gallery to the gutters consists of a part I, of any section, in which is fixed a threaded or partially threaded rod 2, of a certain length.
A sleeve 3 is slipped onto this rod 2, serving to vary the height of the attachment to the gallery, depending on whether this sleeve is placed in the lower part or in the upper part of the device. The interior of this socket is smooth or threaded.
On this rod 2 is also threaded a tube 4, having one smooth or threaded interior and carrying the entire attachment system to the gallery.
All of these parts are held in place by a nut 5, blind or not, or by any other suitable tightening system.
The fastening system comprises a washer 6, forming a block with the tube 4 and forming an indeterminate angle with it. This washer 6 is drilled in its center to receive the head of a bolt 7, partially threaded, integral with a second washer 8 extending through a part 9 carrying fixed, a threaded rod 10 of a certain length. . A nut 11 is used to lock these two washers in the desired position. The two washers 6 and 8 can be toothed or smooth.
A tube 12, either straight or curved, is screwed onto the threaded rod 10, depending on the shape given to the gallery. In the case of a curved gallery, the tube 12 will have a rectilinear part, so as to be screwed properly onto the threaded rod 10. This tube 12 will slide in one of the transverse rails of the gallery, suitable for to receive it and. it will be fixed by all
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
traditional means. A nut 13 fixes the tube 12 at the appropriate spacing with the part 9. This nut increases the rigidity of the assembly and prevents the tube 12 from rotating on itself.
At the lower part of the part I and being integral with it, there is a part 14, in the shape of an inverted T or of a tongue, intended to come to rest in the bottom of the roof gutter.
This part 14 carries a bolt 15 forming a right angle with it and on which is threaded a shim 16 and an L-shaped part 17, the horizontal part 18 of which is intended to be placed under the gutter. These two parts, the shim 16 and the L-shaped part 17, carry an oblong hole, allowing a certain play on the bolt 15 which crosses them.
This clearance makes it possible to adjust the distance between the horizontal part 18 of the L-piece and the lower branch 19 of the inverted T-piece 14. This distance corresponds to the thickness of the gutter. The shim 16 will be adjusted according to the height or depth of the gutter, so as to rest on the top of the outer edge of this gutter. This will therefore be taken, below, inside and on its outer edge, which will make the binding extremely solid.
A nut 20, blind or not, coming to be fixed on the bolt 15 will firmly fix all of these parts.
This knee-brace binding is movable in all directions and variable in height. It therefore allows significant variations and complete and immediate adaptation to the different levels and slopes of the roof gutters.
This apparatus can be made of tubes of any material round, square or of any cross section, of flat iron, of wood, of plastic and in general, of any resistant material which may be of any interest.
The number of deformable diamonds fixed on each side of this gallery will vary according to the artistic or utilitarian goal pursued.
RESELLS ICAT IONS.
This invention relates to a roof rack with an invariable area but with a variable volume. In a construction mode according to the invention, it consists of three superimposed frames and interconnected by elements forming expandable and deformable diamonds. The assembly is fixed to the bodywork at four points resting in the two longitudinal gutters.
The method of fixing this gallery consists of a device that can be adjusted in height and direction, such as a kneepad, as well as a set of parts allowing the gutter to be trapped from below, inside and on the side.
