<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

PLANETARY MECHANISM OF POWER TRANSMISSION.
This invention relates to planetary power transmission mechanisms intended, in particular, for mechanically propelled vehicles.
The invention relates to the combination of a drive shaft, a drive sun gear mounted on said shaft, a feedback sun gear, freely mounted on said shaft, a planetary gear support serving driven element, planetary gears with mutual engagement, provided on said support and respectively engaging the solar control and reaction gears, an internally toothed ring, controllable by brake, engaging the planetary gears, which, themselves, engage the reaction sun gear, an internally toothed ring, provided on said planetary gear support, a second planetary gear support, associated with the reaction sun gear, a brake-controllable element, provided on the second planetary gear support, of a second reaction sun gear,
freely mounted on the control shaft, with planetary gears provided on the second support, engaging the second reaction sun gear and the ring of the first planetary gear support, with a brake-controllable clutch element, associated to the second reaction sun gear, and an additional clutch element, provided on the control shaft.
The accompanying drawing shows a side elevational view in section of a mechanism applying the principle of the invention.
If we refer to this drawing, we see that the control shaft a of the mechanism present, integral with or fixed on it, the integral control pinion bo On this shaft is mounted a planar pinion support c - taires (hereinafter called the first planetary gear support), which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
constitutes the driven element and may be provided integral with a driven shaft d, or be fixed to the latter, which is supported by suitable bearings e and which itself supports the adjacent end of the drive shaft .
On said planetary pinion support c are mounted planetary pinions f and g, mutually engaging, which respectively engage the control sun gear and a reaction sun gear h, the latter being provided integral with a second support i of planetary gears, mounted on the drive shaft, or being fixed to said second support i. The second planetary gear support has, combined with it, an element j, controllable by a brake k, and on it are mounted other planetary gears m, which engage a second reaction sun gear n and an internally toothed ring o, provided on the first planetary pinion support.
In addition, an internally toothed ring p is provided, which engages the gears g of the first planetary gear carrier which engages the mentioned first reaction sun gear h, the p ring being controlled by a brake q.
The second reaction sun gear n is provided integral with a sleeve r, carried by the control shaft, or is attached to this sleeve, which itself carries, integral with or fixed thereto, a clutch element to friction s, controllable by a brake t and which can be engaged by an additional clutch element u, fixed to the control shaft.
If desired, a one-way clutch can be combined with the two reaction sun gears or with either of them. In the arrangement shown in the drawing, it is combined with the second reaction sun gear n and comprises an element v, controllable by a brake w and able to enter into engagement with the sleeve r, by means of rollers x, the surfaces with which the rollers cooperate being provided to engage the parts v and r in a direction of rotation.
With the arrangement shown, the first gear is obtained by stopping the second planetary pinion support. The second speed can be obtained by keeping the clutch element s associated with the second reaction sun gear, but normally this speed will be obtained by stopping the element v by means of the brake w. The element is stopped by the associated brake t, to give the second speed, when it is necessary to use the braking action of the engine during the reduction in the running speed of the vehicle.
The maximum speed is obtained by the engagement of the element s with the clutch element u of the control shaft, this being done, in the example considered, thanks to the axial movement of Isolation u product by a plunger y, actuated by fluid, acting on a part z of the element u. One obtains the reverse movement of Isolated driven by stopping the ring p, which engages with the planetary gears associated with the first reaction sun gear.
If a low additional speed is required, this can be achieved by providing an internally, brake controlled, additional toothed ring mounted on the driven element and placed in engagement with the planetary pinions which engage the control sun pinion. .
By virtue of the arrangement described above, a desired range of gear changes can be provided very advantageously, with ease of control.
