<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
L'invention sera décrit ci-dessous, à titre d'exemple, avec ré- férenée aux dessins annexés, dans lesquels ;
Fig. 1 est en ordre principal une coupe longitudinale d'un dud- geon, montrant en élévation le mandrin et un galet de dudgeonnage; Fig. 2 est une élévation en bout du corps du dudgeon vu de l'ex- trémité gauche de la Fig. 1, la bague de retenue étant, enlevécetlemandrin ainsi que les galets étant représentés en traits de chaînette;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS -IN -DUDGEONS,
This invention relates to a nozzle intended for crimping tubes so as to ensure between the tube and its seat a seal the tightness of which is capable of withstanding pressures, as is the case, for example, between the tubes. of water from a high pressure steam generator and their seats in a wall of a pressure vessel of the generator, and is particularly concerned with improvements to an expanding tube for performing the disclosed tube expanding process and claimed in Main Patent No. 465,168, and of the kind described in that patent comprising a hollow flare body which has at one end circumferentially spaced roller-bearing housings the width of which decreases longitudinally,
conical expansion rollers mounted in these housings, retainers attached to one end of the body and extending across the open ends of the housings, a thrust pad carried by the sprue body ;, a stop piece provided of a threaded bore, capable of turning relative to the body of the flute and intended to transmit the thrust to the thrust pad, and a mandrel comprising a conical part and a cylindrical part provided with a thread screwed into it. the thread of the stop piece.
To make use of the multi-roller nozzle, the body of the nozzle with its rollers is introduced into a tube which has been placed inside a tube seat of a metal wall. The expander is then acted upon to bring the expanding rollers into their external or working positions, so that they produce an expansion of a part of the tube on an internal zone of the seat of the tube. Then, the mandrel continuing to rotate displaces, as a result of the angle formed by the rollers with the mandrel, the body of the nozzle outwards and causes the expansion of the tube progressively towards the end of the tube in which the nozzle
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
was introduced.
Previously, the dudgeons which operated in this manner, had, as is shown in the main patent, tapered mandrels arranged such that the part of smaller diameter or size of the mandrel was located between the point of application of the force on chuck and load. Such a construction tends to cause the mandrels to break and it is an object of the invention to create a retractable multi-roller blade where the use of a cut mandrel is avoided. Another object of the invention is to obtain that the rollers are held in the housings of the body independently of the mandrel, so as to facilitate the replacement of the latter.
In a multi-roller retractable flute of the kind specified in accordance with the present invention, the end part of the body under consideration exhibits a wall of increased thickness due to a reduction in the diameter of the tube. 'bore, each roller has a larger diameter at its end closest to the retainer than at its other end and the width of the housing intended for it varies correspondingly, while the tapered portion of the mandrel converges towards an end of the mandrel adjacent to the retainer.
The invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Fig. 1 is in main order a longitudinal section of an expansion, showing in elevation the mandrel and an expansion roller; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the blunt body viewed from the left end of FIG. 1, the retaining ring being removed and the mandrel as well as the rollers being shown in chain lines;
Fig. 3 is a partial vertical section taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a partial plan view showing the portion of the bladder shown in FIG. 3.
The nozzle comprises the hollow tubular body 10, one end 12 of which has an extra thickness as a result of the reduction in its bore and is provided with three equidistant roller-holder housings 14, 15 and 16 distributed around its circumference. A roller similar to that indicated at 18 is mounted in each of these housings, and these are established in such a way that the corresponding rollers are held therein when they are not in contact with the mandrel or with the retaining ring. shingles.
The rollers are set up so that their longitudinal axes form an angle of about 2 degrees with the longitudinal axis of the mandrel indicated generally at 26, and the main section 20 of each roller has a conical angle. - tee such that it adapts suitably to the conical section 28 of the mandrel and exerts on the metal of the tube a pressure gradually increasing from the part of the main section 20 of the roller adjacent to its conical end 24 to the part of the section main adjacent to the tapered end 22, which does the harder part of the work on the metal of the tube.
The rollers are held in the working position by a steel retaining ring 30, fixed to the thicker end 12 of the hollow body 10 by one or more cap screws such as 32. The front end of the mandrel can move inside this ring when the mandrel is rotated to push the rollers outward into their working position after the introduction of the bud into the tube.
The mandrel is a cylindrical steel body having a threaded section 34 which is screwed into the sleeve or stopper 36 which is mounted within the larger diameter end 38 of the body and is formed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
provided with an annular thrust flange 40 bearing against the thrust ring 42 with a ball bearing 44 mounted in the end 38, the ball bearing and the thrust piece being held in the working position by a bar - retaining guide 46 screwed to the end of part 38, as shown at 48.
The stop piece 36 is provided with a tip 50 for receiving a key, so that it can be prevented from turning, when the drive motor which engages the square tip 52 of the chuck turns it. -this .
The body 10 of the flute has a series of annular grooves 54-59 intended to maintain in one or the other of a certain number of positions corresponding to these grooves a stop 62 engaging the tube. The stop 62 is constituted by an annular steel ring into which is screwed radially at least one stop screw 64, the inner end of which can be housed inside the chosen groove, for example, the groove 57, as shown, to fix the ring in the desired position relative to the groove.
In use, the stopper 62 is fixed in place on the body 10, so that when the stopper abuts against the end of a tube to be expanded, the ends of the rollers furthest from the stopper protrude a slightly the internal end of the seat on which the tube must be expanded.
when the body 10, with the rollers in their retracted positions, has been introduced into the end of the tube in such a way that 1)) the stop 62 abuts against the end of the tube, the end 50 of the part 50 is maintained. stop with a wrench or counterclockwise while rotating the chuck, until the rollers have expanded the tube on the far end of the seat. inside, after which the end of the stop piece is released and the mandrel, continuing to rotate, causes a progressive displacement of the body towards the outside with respect to the tube and a progressive expansion of the tube on its seat from the inner end to the end. the outer end of the latter.
As the flute has a mandrel the taper of which is directed in the opposite direction to that of the mandrels with which the known flanges with retractile rollers are fitted, one avoids having a smaller section in the shape of a waist, between the point of application of the force exerted on the mandrel and that of the resistance to be overcome by this force, which has the effect of reducing the tendency to break and notably increasing the. longevity of the dudgeon, under conditions not requiring major repairs.
By creating a flare body having an extra thickness at the location where the housings of the rollers which come into engagement with the tube are located, it is possible to give these housings such a turn that the rollers are held in them even when the mandrel is removed, while at the same time there is a mandrel of maximum diameter and strength inside the flute body and a larger and stronger retaining ring can be attached to the end of the . part of greater thickness of the body of the dudgeon to maintain in their working positions the rollers which attack the tube.
The shape of the nozzle body described offers a notable advantage in the event of repairs to be made to the nozzle, as the rollers are held in their working position when the chuck is withdrawn for separations or replacement.
