L'invention a pour objet un accouplement pour tubes ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to a coupling for tubes and more especially of the type referred to as "short" or "contiguous", that is to say couplings in which the tube and the coupling elements can be positioned and aligned for tight tightening of the coupling by sliding the tube towards the coupling sideways without requiring appreciable relative axial displacement.,
The invention relates to a coupling for tubes;
characterized in that it comprises the combination, on the one hand, of a connecting member having a circular internal bore surrounded by one end having an annular housing facing the tube to be coupled, on the other hand, of a nut comprising an internal conical shoulder opposite said end of the connector and means for moving this shoulder towards said end, and on the other hand finally a coupling element adapted to grip the tube to be coupled and disposed between said end face and said shoulder,
said coupling member having a tip portion capable of engaging with the end of said coupling and having a rear portion with an outwardly directed annular edge connected to a conical surface the inclination of which is larger than said shoulder and can therefore progressively engage with the shoulder, the rear portion having a cutting edge and an inner and front edge adapted to be reduced in diameter and advanced into the outer surface of the shoulder. tube, so as to bite into this surface and to fold a rib outwards, which ensures a tight junction and resistant to shocks and vibrations.
The invention makes it possible to couple pipes, tubes and the like to a joint body without having to thread or bevel the end of the tube and to tighten the leak-proof joint and to hold the tube against all sides. pulling of the junction against internal fluid pressures as high as the resistance of the tube allows, without restricting the inside diameter of the tube and without requiring appreciable axial displacement of the tube in the body, of the fitting before making gasket.
It allows the coupling operation to be carried out, so as to guarantee satisfactory joints with all kinds of pipes and tubes, including very thin-walled tubes.
Further objects of the invention are to contract an annular cutting edge in the surface of the tube as it is moved axially relative to the tube so as to cut into the metal of the tube while controlling both the depth. of the notch and angle of the cutting edge and to reduce the deflection of the coupling fitting carrying the cutting edge, so as to reduce the risk of cracking or breakage and to achieve consistently satisfactory joints.
The invention makes it possible to make and reinforce the seal, against a connection member, of the end of an annular coupling element which carries a tubular cutting ring at the rear of its end, so as to produce a Tight seal between the end of the element and the connection fitting, able to withstand high fluid pressures and more resistant to shock and vibration.
This, and other features appearing below, is achieved by ab) uting the free end of the tube to be mated against an end face of a connector member, surrounding the end of the tube. with a coupling member having one end adapted to sealingly engage the end face of the fitting, an annular portion spaced rearwardly from the end having an annular inner cutting edge and a deformable intermediate portion and clamping the coupling member between the fitting and a nut or the like having a portion arranged to engage with the periphery of the annular portion to reduce the diameter of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the cutting edge and simultaneously deform the intermediate portion of the element to reduce its axial length,
so that the cutting edge cuts and intersects the wall of the tube, the nut having a further butt surface disposed to engage the annular portion of the member after it has been rolled under. the desired angle so as to definitively limit the magnitude of the contraction of the cutting edge and the deformation of the intermediate portion thus producing the predetermined value of the notching of the tube,
without allowing the cutting edge to roll out of the notched groove or cut too deeply into the tube wall and without causing undue stress or weakening the intermediate portion of the coupling element.
A reinforced and increased seal of the coupling member against the fitting can also be achieved in accordance with the invention by notching the outer edge of the front end of the coupling member, so that this end rolls towards the end. 'inside and bites into the fitting thereby slightly contracting the end of the element and sealing it against leaks from fluid pressure in the tube.
Rolling the end of the coupling member also slightly bends the adjacent portion of the middle portion of the coupling member so that its end is resiliently pressed against the coupling to maintain its engagement. tight during any slight movements which may result from vibrations, shocks or from expansion or contraction of the parts This action of the front end of the coupling element can also be facilitated by forming a shallow recess in the face of the fitting with an inner tapered surface to engage with the front end of the element and another tapered surface to engage with the end of the tube to be mated to help hold the end of the tube against a slump - inside while tightening the coupling.
By controlling and limiting the action of the annular portion of the coupling element according to the present invention, the curvature and the deformation of the intermediate portion of the element is also limited and controlled so as to minimize the forces. imposed on any part of the element's metal. This allows the cutting edge of the element to be quenched to a sufficient degree of hardness to score the surface of the tube without the risk of breaking or splitting in the intermediate or end portions of the coupling element.
The invention also extends to the characteristics resulting from the following description and the appended drawings as well as to their possible combinations.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a preferred form of the invention and in these drawings: - Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing the parts of the coupling assembled on a tube ready to be clamped.
Figure 2 is a similar view after the nut has been tightened on the fitting.
- Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the rear end of the coupling element.
In the illustrated form of the invention, the assembly comprises three main elements, a connection fitting 10 a nut 11 having a screw connection with the fitting and a coupling element 18 adapted to be threaded onto the end of the pipe. or tube 12 to be coupled and compressed by the fitting and the nut to tighten and anchor the tube.
The connector 10 is formed with an axial bore 25, and in the embodiment shown its end face is provided with a tapered face 23.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
inclined inward and forward to engage with the anterior end of the coupling member and a member and provided with an interior and rear portion 24 for engagement with the end of tube 12.
As shown the conical face 23 is inclined at an angle of about 77 to the longitudinal axis of the connector 10, while the conical face 24 makes an opposite angle of about 67 with the longitudinal axis of the connector 10. , The two faces 23 and 24 meet along a circular line 260 The nut 'II is provided with an axial bore to receive the tube
12 and is formed with an enlarged counterbore having an internal thread
13 screwing onto the corresponding threads of the connector 10, At the rear portion of the counterbore, this is cylindrical in 14 and connects to an inclined conical rear face 15 which makes an angle of about 30 with the axis of the nut.
The surface 15 connects at 16 to a second conical surface 17 which makes an angle of about 70 with the axis of the nut so that the angle between the two faces 15 and-17 is about 135.,
The coupling element 18 is constituted by three main parts, a front portion 19 for engaging and forming a seal against the connector 10, an annular portion 20 which is formed at its inner front edge with a cutting edge 21. and a deformable intermediate portion 22 which has an inner diameter larger than the cutting edge 21, so that its sufaceinédieuris outwardly relative to the wall of the tube 12 when the parts are assembled initially (figo 1).
The annular portion
20 also projects radially outwardly beyond the outer surface of the intermediate portion 22 and in the embodiment shown there is provided a front surface 31 projecting radially beyond the intermediate portion 22, a cylindrical surface 32, an inclined surface 35 at its rear upper angle forming an angle of about
45 with the axis of the connector 18 and a rearwardly facing surface 34 disposed perpendicular to the axis of the connector 18.
The annular portion 20 has an axial bore 35 which intersects a forward facing surface 36 which extends radially inwardly from the intermediate portion 22 and in the illustrated embodiment is placed rearward. of surface 31. The intersection of bore 35 and surface 36 provides a cutting edge 21 and in the embodiment shown, surface 36 slopes forward at an angle of about 80 with the cylindrical inner surface. of the intermediate portion 22.
The bore 35 is slightly larger in diameter than the outer diameter of the tube 12 to be coupled so that the nut 11 and the element ¯¯ ,,,,; .
coupling. 18 can be threaded onto the free end of the tube 12 before it is moved into alignment with the connector 10 The nut 11 is then screwed onto the connector 10, Before tightening the coupling element, the parts occupy the position shown in figure 1. When screwing the nut to. From its position in Figure 1, the conical surface 15 of the nut 11 first engages with the rear exterior angle of the inclined face 33 of the annular portion 20.
Due to the respective angles of surfaces 15 and 33, these surfaces take an angle of 15 at the start of contact with the rear angle of surface 330.
Subsequent tightening of the nut causes the surface 15 to exert an axial force forward and radially on the outer corner of the annular portion 20.The forward-facing component acts to roll the annular portion 20 towards forward by bending or bulging the intermediate portion 22, while the radial inward component prevents the outer edge of the surface 33 from moving radially outward.
Thus the rolling action contracts the diameter of the cutting edge 21 causing it to bite into the surface of the tube 12. The bulging of the intermediate portion 22 connects the coupling element and causes the cutting edge to bite.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
te 21 moves axially forward with respect to tube 12 as it bites into it radially, This action cuts through the metal from tube 12 and forms an annular rib 37 in front of cutting edge 36 (figure 2) .
At the same time that the nut 11 engages with the rear portion of the ring 20 of the element 18, the anterior ridge portion 19 of the element 18 is pivoted against the conical face 23 inclined towards the end. 'inside until the outer diameter 29 of the portion 19 comes into contact with the face 23 to limit the pivoting and the front projection penetrates the face 23 forming the seal o When the cutting edge 21 of the th - the coupling element enters the tube 12 as said above, the open end of the tube 12 slides along the face 24, which slightly increases the diameter of the tube and seals the latter against the face 24, while the 'el-. coupling is sealed on face 23 when advancing the nut
II.
The ring is constructed so that it has a thick wall at each end with a thin intermediate wall between these ends.
As a result, the bulge of the ring is limited to the thin-walled media portion and at the same time maintains the thin-walled sections directly adjacent to the thick ends in a relatively undeformed condition. The bulge is shown in figure 2, the axial component imposed on the ring when the nut is tightened,
having produced a bend at 30 which bears against the outer diameter of the tube and another bend at 30a which is free from contact with the tube and free from contact with the inner bore of the tube. nut engagement of the curvature 30 with the outside diameter of the tube ensures significant resistance to any further displacement of the nut towards the fitting and indicates to the operator that the joint is made due to the marked increase in the torque resistant to screwing . The curvatures thus caused in the ring at 30 and 30a provide longitudinal elastic resistance of the ring, so as to force the front end of the ring to sealingly engage with the inclined wall 23 of the connector.
At the same time. the open end of the tube is slightly increased in diameter and slightly flared by the limited advance of the tube relative to the fitting. It is understood that the open end of the tube is advanced and brought into sealed engagement with the connector by the cutting edge at 21, notching the outer wall of the tube, pushing the latter forward by a limited quantity, when screwing the nut.
The radially inwardly directed action exerted by the cutting edge on the ring during the tightening period of the nut, is limited by the inclined faces 15 and 17 acting on the corresponding faces of the rear portion of the ring and by re-engaging the curvature at 30.
The inclinations of 15 and 17 limit the tilting displacement of the thick-walled portion at the rear end and form a complementary housing for the corresponding rear portion of the cutting edge when it has been positioned. by screwing, thus controlling the depth of cut of the edge 21 in the tube 12 to that permitted by the radial reduction in the diameter of the cutting edge when the portion 20 has rotated by an amount and d 'a depth limited by the intersection of surfaces 15 and 17.
The relative positions of the end 12a of the tube and the portions
19 of the ring are even more directly adjacent after the screwing action o the limited flaring of the tube combined with the tilting of the front end of the ring, ensures a double tight seal with the fitting, first by the 'engagement of the flared tube and secondly by the front end of the cutting edge.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Although a particular form of the invention has been described and shown, it is understood that variations can be made in the coupling parts without thereby departing from the scope of the intention.
