subit aucune sollicitation extérieure, vienne occuper la position pour la- quelle la commande du frein n'a pas lieu et que, lorsue l'usager place les pieds sur les pédales et simplement par le poids des jambes, le pédalier vienne se placer à une position pour laquelle le frein peut être commandé par contre-pédalage;

IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO THE COUNTER-PEDALING BRAKING DEVICES
FOR BICYCLES, WITH OR WITHOUT AN AUXILIARY MOTOR, AND SIMILAR.
It is known to control, by counter-pedaling, the brakes of a bicycle with or without an auxiliary motor or other similar vehicle, via the vehicle chain and a hub brake, or by a stopper and a pawl or the like that is mounted on the crankshaft (French patent N 372. 993 of 1906) or on the bottom bracket (French patent n 370.992 of 1906) to control a braking system, by pads, acting on the rim of one of the vehicle wheels.
These known devices have the major drawback that they do not allow the vehicle to be rolled backwards without automatically operating the brake, which consequently blocks the vehicle. Likewise, they do not allow the user to bring the pedals to a position of his choice, to restart the vehicle, or to rest it on the edge of a sidewalk.
The object of the invention is, above all, to remedy these drawbacks while producing the crankset and the braking members in a simple manner.
It consists, mainly, in elastically connecting the whole of the crankset to the frame of the vehicles, of the type in question, so that the crankset can come to occupy two positions, for one of which, during the rearward rotation of the crankset, the brake cannot be controlled, and for the other of which, on the contrary, the brake is applied by the tootation behind the pedal.
It consists, apart from this main provision, of certain other provisions which are preferably used at the same time and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular: = a second provision consisting in establishing and calibrate the elastic means by which the crankset is attached to the frame of vehicles of the type in question, such as the crankset, when it is not

does not undergo any external stress, comes to occupy the position for which the brake control does not take place and that, when the user places his feet on the pedals and simply by the weight of the legs, the pedal comes to a position position for which the brake can be controlled by counter-pedaling;
- And in a third arrangement consisting in moving the crankset in such a way that the chain line, and the distance between the axis of the bottom bracket plate and of the rear hub, remain substantially constant.
The single figure of the accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, and in schematic elevation, a back-pedaling braking device established in accordance with the invention.
In the drawing we denote by 1 the frame of a bicycle, by 2 the tire and by 3 the rim of the rear wheel, the axle of which is held by basic elements 4 and by shrouds 5. The box 6 of crankset is articulated at the front end of the elements 4 by a pivot 7 and this box can come to occupy two positions A and B. A spring 8 constantly urges the box 6 towards position B shown in dotted lines. On the plate 9 of the crankset is established at least one stud 10. When the user does not put his feet on the pedals 11, the bottom bracket 6, by the action of the spring 8, automatically returns to position B and comes into abutment. against a resistant part of the frame.
In this position, the stud (s) 10 are arranged in such a way that the plate 9 can turn in the opposite direction with respect to the normal driving direction of the vehicle without encountering any obstacle. When the user places his feet on the pedals 11, under the sole effect of the weight of his legs, the box 6 comes to occupy position A, shown in solid lines, abutting against the edge of a fixed part or metal plate 12 rigidly to the base elements 4 of the frame, the tension of the spring 8 being insufficient to compensate for the weight of the user's legs.
In this position A of the bottom bracket when performing a counter-pedaling, the stud 10 is placed behind a spout of a lever 13 which is constantly returned to a stop 14 by a spring 15. By the ef- fet of the stud 10 and against the pedaling the lever 13 advances and drives a connecting rod 16 articulated to a fixed pivot 17 which brings the shoes of the brake 18 closer to the rim 3 of the wheel. When the pedals turn in the normal direction, for driving the vehicle, a ramp provided on the spout of lever 12 allows stud 10 to pass normally without catching this lever.
The location of the pivot 7 and the two positions A and B of the bottom bracket 6 are chosen in such a way that when the box 6 moves from position A to position B, the distance from the axle crankset to the hub axle does not change so to speak, the chain line constantly remaining in the same plane.
As a result of which a back-pedaling braking device is obtained which satisfies the aim which it is proposed to achieve.
